"...it was more like asking a direct question and not getting a direct (or truthful) answer."
Tilt

That's exactly what I am experiencing, Tilt. I've been asking a direct question, but I am left with a reaction that is either avoidance or untruthful. I have no way of knowing which and I have no way of knowing whether to stay or go away. I want to be damned if I leave a friend, but if I keep pursueing a hopeless case, it does not just embarress the other person, it does embarress me very much!!

Whenever it did happen to me that I was asked directly, I gave an honest answer and always took very much care to do it as polite and carefull as possible, because I beliefed the other person absolutly deserved to be treaten honest and kind.

Hey there, Pam. After reading your post above I wanted to tell you that you sound like a fantastic, warm, giving person, but maybe to a fault. You sound like you do everything you can to fix his problems and to cater to his needs and to be his ultimate helpmate. That's what a good wife is; right? But if he doesn't have to do all that for himself, he never has to take responsibility for himself. You are enabling him by not allowing him to fail. Tough love is sooooo hard, but it's so necessary. It's not just for kids. I recommend a book called Love Must Be Tough.

you are right Ruby, that's why i stopped doing the housework and laundry. i told him, "look when you worked fulltime, this is what i did, it's your turn, you are the at home parent now, you get to cook, clean and do the laundry". i'm out of clean clothes and he'll tell me, if you sort it out, i'll wash it, hello, i don't remember asking you to do that! or he'll throw it on the couch and tell me it's clean, and then i'll say, gonna fold it?

Absolutely, Euro --- It's hard to know what to do, being in limbo like that. I put up with it as long as I could (and then some)... but I finally said, "Adios! Good-bye! Don't call or write to me. That's IT!"

Before ten days passed she was emailing again --- It was surreal. I had never seen anyone so selfish as to put someone else through something like that.

But that was the end of it.... Finally.

Too bad HOI, you're a very intelligent and nice man. Some lady would be lucky to find you. Course I mean a backpacking lady but apparently there aren't too many of those out there.

I think you guys (ewker) need to start teaching a course for women only on how to backpack. Sell it as an adventure and an opportunity for women to rely on themselves and be "empowered", then pick out the ones that look promising for "advanced" trips and invite them. WhaLA! Instant date who backpacks. Aren't I full of good ideas? ;)

I don't need a guy to teach me how to backpack and I don't need a guy that will take me backpacking. I know how to put on a pack on and head off to the mountains just fine already. On the other hand, it sure would be nice having a guy at home who would have the house clean, the yard work done, and a nice meal cooked for me when I get home.

Wingding, I'm not trying to imply that all women need a man to teach them anything, just thinking it may be a way to meet women who really want to backpack, not just hike to the waterfall and then stay in a hotel. Obviously there are a few women out there who know what they're doing and enjoy doing it,yourself included, but not enough for all the guys who want a mate to share the trails.

Sass: But i just want a mate who will stay at home and take care of the house so that I can wander in the wilderness during my free time. :) Seriously though, the majority of people that hike do not hike with their significant other. They go out and enjoy their hikes either alone or with friends. That's just the way it is. Sometimes it's good to hobbies and interests of our own.

Spirit Coyote - there must be something wrong with your marriage or you wouldn't be hanging out on this thread.
