Do they exist?
Looking for a decent pair for this season without breaking the bank. 95% of trips will be day trips with light loads. May do an occassional weekend trip with a heavier load. Main concern is getting a good pair for day trips. I wouldn't mind having to buy another pair for a weekend trip, as that will be towards mid-Summer when I have more money.

Suggestions?

How about affordable boots that come in width? I have got decent LLBean's at their outlet store in Concord NH, but they have pretty much given up the ghost after about 600 miles.

I wear Cabela's Trail Lite hikers. They have them with a Gore-Tex lining as well. Backpacker.com rated them pretty well in their cheap boots test...

I love them. They've never given me a blister, and have the perfect amount of ankle support and stiffness for the load I carry (generally 25 -35 pounds depending on how much food I'm carrying).

I had good luck with a pair of Nevados. Looked more like running shoes, very comfortable and never felt the rocks thur the soles.

Anyone ever use the Gore-Tex Mountain Treads? They look pretty good. See them here

I just bought a pair of Saloman low top hiking shoes. I will be trying these out on the trail when I gets me a chance. Cost? 39.95 on clearance at REI

Since most of your hiking is dayhiking, buy a pair of trail or approach shoes instead. You'll get more use out of them and they wont cost as much. No sense recommending a brand or model because you have to fit them comfortably and that's an individual thing.
