Castle Crags
I was just up there last week! Hiked to the dome, and took the PCT to the west and camped overnight. Saw lots of bear tracks, but no bears :(. I also never saw another person while I was there. Beautiful place with things in bloom this time of year.

I always backpacked with trekking poles...right from day 1...I don't have the strongest knees...

Last year I hiked with the poles twice...I could go farther and quicker, more stable too...I will be hiking with poles from now on...love them.

As a semi-geriatric ex-jock with osteoarthritis in both knees, I can testify that trekking poles are a friggin' godsend. It is a well established fact that they take a lot of stress off of healthy , young knees as well. I would recommend them to all you young folks in order to prevent problems later in life. Buy the poles before you develop problems, and you may never have any! If I never accomplish anything else in my life, and just one of you takes this advice, I will not have lived in vain.

another testimonial. I didn't use mine much till I clobbered my knee, and there were wonderful during rehab, really easing the strain and pain, allowing me to hike much more, much sooner. Now I use them almost like ski poles, getting an upper body workout, too.

I use mine if my pack weight is up around 30 pounds. Any less and I don't really need them.

Hey Phaedrus
glad you liked the dome thats one of my favorite little day hikes this time of year befor it gets hot and crowded. I also like the little detour to indian springs...you can drink strait from the rock where the water pours out, i always do

It's a personal preference thing, simer. I carry one because I like to have the third leg for balance, and to help my poor old worn-out knees. I used to carry two, but I lost one (in the house somewhere) and I've found that using one is good enough for me.

maybe i'll have to look into it... my dad brought it up once, he seemed dissappointed that i wouldn't go hiking with a stick he found in the woods...
