who wants to go in august??
we had such a great!! time hiking on north manitou last august that we will be returning again this year....it would be a wonderful opportunity for tt'ers with kids....(run a tt search for "manitou" to read other trip descriptions)....i was thinking about the weekend of august 23-25....there are plenty of big campsites on the southeastern side of the island which allow for spectacular views of the sundown (and of the lights twinkling on the mainland) and easy access to the (white sand) beach and lake michigan....

who might be interested in going??

will this weekend work with everyone's schedules??

Great idea Gonzo, but we are supposed to be visiting relatives in Fl that week. A lot of TT'ers' kids will be back to school that week, also. Sounds like a great place; maybe we can make it next year if you make it an annual thing.

August won't work for us =(. We do plan on going July Forth weekend. Wanna come along then? I know it's not as fun because the lake isn't as warm. I'd like to hike with Brandy again!

we can probably go any weekend in august if that works better for someone else....i mentioned the 23-25 because of the full moon on the 22nd....it was a full moon last year when we were up there and the island was lit up like it was daytime!!

sassafras....we will be going to yosemite the very next weekend after july 4th....i doubt if we could make it up there then.... we would sure like to hike again with you and birch (and all the rest of the michigan mouseketeers) sometime this summer, though!!

We are a 12 hour drive from Detroit. How much further would it be?

Northwestern NJ, and I don't want anyone to change the date just for us, because I don't know if I can bribe...er, talk my family into driving out there. We are driving to florida, as well. I would rank road trips with my family as slightly less stressful than putting up wallpaper.

LyndyS,

It's another 4 or 5 hours from Detroit to N. Manitou. I'd save it for a week in the summer when you can cruise the Great Lakes coast a bit and hop over to the islands for a few days.

I love the place. But the return on investment wouldn't be quite right for that drive.

It is the perfect trip for children. The return would be worth the trouble if your packin' kids, imho. It is one big, beautiful playground and beach with easy trails. You could easily spend 5 easy days with lots of playing on the island. You can also check out S. Manitou for a day or two.

I think that a week long trip sounds wonderful. I'm going to put it on my short list of places to go with the kids. Next year will probably work better for us, though.

I thought you had a campout with friends? I don't know exactly where Charlalavoy is but you'd need to get to Leland to catch a ferry. Leland is up past Traverse City, in the left tip of the mitten.

73 miles Charlevoix to Leland.

Ouch. That's longer than I was imagining.

Well, If I head to Charlevoix Wednesday night, I might get sick of my other friends by Friday or Saturday. I have no idea what they're going to do car camping for 5 days. Last time I went with this group, they didn't even want to go hiking!! What's up with that?
