I've never hiked with Crazy Mike, but I've hiked with a few people he has hiked with, and they all seemed to like him. He must be OK!

Man, if it was this past weekend, I would've joined ya. I just got back last night. I like C-Town and it's not really all THAT far from us (SE Michigan). I'll 'member you next time I'm in your area to hook up for some sort of hike. And yes, you too Crazy Mike....

I know Crazy Mike is out nearly every weekend, but right now I don't have that much time. My $$$ runs out soon so I gotta keep my nose to the keyboard. So was looking for a more short-live diversion. Starved Rock just doesn't do it any more after they put in all the board walks and stairs!

Lake Geneva
It is not a hike in the traditional sense but if you just want to kill a day, you can walk around the lake. Great old homes. Some minor up and down stuff. More interesting than you would think. 23 miles I think so you may not want to do the whole trip in a day. Do the north side if you are just doing one side.

I had 4 hours to kill in Chicago recently while waiting for my step-daughter's train. Reino and I had a wonderful night "Loop" hike from Union Station to Berghoff's for fresh-brewed beer, then over to The Italian Village for cocktails and cuisine, then circled back to Berghoff's for espresso and carmel custard in the dining room, then back on the trail to Union Station. All tolled, we must have put in a good 15 blocks, and some of it was through a construction site, so don't think we didn't have to pay attention to the trail. Lots of parking at the trailhead, though the permit was $10! (Since you live there, stumprider, you can probably save on this by taking the El to the trailhead.)

pekka,

Sounds like you had a GREAT trip. Not a bad route! You hit some good sites. Well, can't say that about Union Station. Depending on when you hit the trailhead, that was cheap for 4 hours. BTW, trailhead fee isn't free for me, $1.50. As for calculating mileage, 15 blocks is usually 1.5 miles. (I say "about" because some blocks are short. Typically 10 blocks to a mile.)

Union Station sucks. I made sure to ride the Metra down there, taking a line that went specifically there. Could remember it as a kid, coming into it on an old passenger train that doesn't run anymore.

It was all redone!! Heck, I could vaguely remember a stately old train station with huge open spaces. Did that used to be there, or am I dreaming??

stumprider, hike all around Navy Pier!

Do it on a cold, nasty, wet day. (kinda like today) Put on all your high-performance gear. And go for it. You'll have it almost all to yourself, guaranteed. Been there, done that.

OK, I was taking photos off it, too... if you want a look, go here. You'll quickly spot the city shots going through my "portfolio."

Some sites
Got an e-mail from REI about "local hikes" in store seminars, along with corporate sponsors.

http://www.rei.com/storelocator/oakbrookterrace/oakbrookterhktemp.html

is one list of area hikes, looks like many REI stores are having similar sessions this Saturday. So if you can't be like Mike, it might be worth a gander.

It's a good deal. I haven't figured out yet which trip is $1. But for example, a RT Chicago/Minneapolis can be $30. You just can't beat that.

Only so many seats are available at a buck. Then it goes up, to whatever they have as a top price, i guess.

Really? I'm moving to Chesterton this month. Who knew we would actually be closer.

And speaking of the bus....

After reading this thread this morning I told Jon about the great bus deals by CoachUSA. This afternoon he called me while he was driving down I-94. He was laughing. He said, "Now I know why those bus fares are so cheap. They never get to their destination. I just passed a CoachUSA bus that was broken down on the shoulder of the interstate. All the passengers were standing alongside the bus looking p*ssed."
Ruby

I'm sure it was the bus the goes to Midway or O'Hare. CoachUSA operates regular runs to both airports from lots of cities in Indiana.
