What is your favoite bird to hear while hiking?View MessagesI love owls!!!!! “I would have to say that my favorite bird to hear is the Barred Owl.There call is so cool!!!!I could hear them all night and not get sick of it. So what bird or birds does everyone else like? 8)” 5:51:44 PM 4/23/02 “F-16 on an NOE training flight.” 5:53:19 PM 4/23/02 “Wrong kind of bird dude! 8)” 5:57:18 PM 4/23/02 “I was going to say the guttural croak of a raven as it picks eyeballs and flesh from my corpse in the backcountry, but of course I would be dead and it wouldn't be that enjoyable after all. Alternatively, I will say the scream of a peregrine falcon just before it punctures my skull with its talons because I am too close to its nest!” 5:59:40 PM 4/23/02 “A loon or a sea gull.” 6:01:47 PM 4/23/02 “double breasted bed thrasher” 6:09:41 PM 4/23/02 “Loons are very cool! 8) Foamfinger that sounds cool!Weird but cool!” 6:13:45 PM 4/23/02 “Owls. Especially the kind that does the single, deep hoot.” 6:23:07 PM 4/23/02 “ptarmigan” 6:27:51 PM 4/23/02 “That would be a Barred Owl! Love to see them! 8)” 7:08:38 PM 4/23/02 “I also like the Great Horned Owl.. there's something to be said about a whipperwill's call off in the distance also.” 7:10:00 PM 4/23/02 “Check this website out. Enature.com Go to the bird calls and go to the owls click on barred owl and it sounds way cool!!!! 8)” 7:13:36 PM 4/23/02 “Ever have a flushed grouse almost give you a heart attack?” 7:24:54 PM 4/23/02 “Yes, this afternoon actually.” 7:26:56 PM 4/23/02 “Quail are my least favorite. They explode right in front of you. Is a grouse the same thing as a quail?” 7:36:12 PM 4/23/02 “I've flushed grouse while XC skiing in the dark. ACK!” 7:37:29 PM 4/23/02 “We used to hear lots of owls skiing at night in Fairbanks. Most of it was on a trail next to the Army base. We figured it was the guys out for night/winter training spying on us. I know some were real though, most active in the spring.” 7:42:19 PM 4/23/02 “Quail are smaller than grouse I believe.” 7:44:05 PM 4/23/02 “Owls are very cool!!!!! 8) I love them!” 7:45:41 PM 4/23/02 “double breasted bed thrasher in concert with a trojan” 7:50:02 PM 4/23/02 I have heard that call “Double Breasted? With a trojan? Iz Biz Bi?” 7:53:17 PM 4/23/02 “loons remind me most of northern mn, mid candada, canoe trips... i agree with the call of the hawk, and owls at night, or the beat of the ruffed grouse, birds in general or cool” 8:11:35 PM 4/23/02 “I think bald eagles when they catch a fish also looks cool! 8)” 8:16:37 PM 4/23/02 “I'd forgotten about loons. Definitely cool.” 8:26:12 PM 4/23/02 Do you see “Those often Biz?” 8:42:25 PM 4/23/02 “It would for sure be the elusive and really seen pipsquack bird. Followed by the redtail and loons. Ravens I have heard are one of the most vocally diversified birds with upwards of 20 something different sounds. Pipsquack!” 8:53:50 PM 4/23/02 “That was on a cartoon one time was it not? 8)” 9:02:24 PM 4/23/02 “Snipe.” 9:09:36 PM 4/23/02 “I was staying with a buddy of mine in Cape Cod, and he was telling me there were a lot of coyotes in his area, which is very wooded. A few months ago when I was up there, we went on the internet and recorded sounds of rabbits in distress, and blasted them through a boombox on his back porch. No coyotes came, but at least half a dozen great horned owls started hooting at us, and coming closer. We saw a huge one land in a tree in his backyard, we could see it in the moonlight. We were so stoked that we lured one in, and before we knew it, another one swooped in and the two started fighting! It was nuts, they must have been getting territorial over the alleged "rabbit". I'll never forget it.” 9:10:21 PM 4/23/02 “Hehehe! Seriously, though, I like the sound of the loon.” 9:10:30 PM 4/23/02 “Pipsquack! Sounds like someone had the same babysitter as I did!” 9:10:32 PM 4/23/02 “I bet that was real cool aretx!!!!!! 8)” 9:11:53 PM 4/23/02 “If you have never heard a rabbit scream, it is really "hare" raising. Squirrels too.” 9:30:21 PM 4/23/02 “Yeah, it's a creepy sound. Crazy M, if you have woods nearby, give it a shot! I was amazed at how many owls we lured in. It was unreal. Especially when those two started going at it with eachother. It was really awesome to watch.” 9:33:51 PM 4/23/02 “Anyone know what the "cheeseburger" bird is? It's in the Sierra.” 9:46:02 PM 4/23/02 “Are you referring to the mountain chickadee?” 10:07:51 PM 4/23/02 “I love those cheeseburger birds!!!” 10:16:42 PM 4/23/02 “AKA: sixpack bird. Six-package six-package” 10:19:24 PM 4/23/02 “Kind of reminds you of SNL after a while. Nothing else on the menu. Although, never heard of the six-pack version.” 10:53:15 PM 4/23/02 “I heard the cheeseburger bird at San Gorgonio but it had a extra syllable, it was saying veggie burger. The grouse is bigger than a quail. The males are colorful, the females are dull. They make a sound like blowing on the top of a coke bottle.” 12:09:12 AM 4/24/02 “I love the sound of hawks, ospreys, falcons, and eagles. It always means it's time to break out the binoculars and watch the foodchain in action. Owls are cool too, but too often it's night and I can't locate them. I cant believe anybody would like seagulls; they are rats with wings.” 12:58:25 AM 4/24/02 “I also like the calls of the raptor birds the best. I also like this bird that was in PA, I don't know what is was but it's call was sounded like 'Eric, Eric' (my brother's name) KILLER website Crazy Mike. Thanks!!” 1:59:47 AM 4/24/02 “No problem!!!!! 8)” 5:57:28 AM 4/24/02 “Canada Geese and sandhill cranes.” 6:24:42 AM 4/24/02 “I also like to see woodpeckers. Love the sound.” 6:29:43 AM 4/24/02
