backpackin guitar

“Well, i dont think i can talk my hikin partner into packin my amp & a generator for my strat-o-caster, so I need a backpackin guitar. I do have a little battery powered amp but the strat weighs like 25 lbs. anybody got one they dun want? those Martins are cool, even though the tone is a little cheesy. At least I could get ma "fix" whilst i'm out there for 4 days!”

“I remember seeing small-bodied acoustics advertised that they were great for camping trips. Might be more lightweight and less annoying to other hikers.. but then again, power riffs don't sound as good on an acoustic! :-)”

“stumpdewd, i know waht yer sayin dood, but it's not like i'm gonna be playin purple haze n doin feedback & blastin all da lil woodland creatures away. I jsut love to play my guitar. It's in my blood. It's niceto sit around at night and play a lil blues, er whatevah. i aint the kind to be offensive. there have been many times, at a camping area, where people came up to me the next day & told me thay enjoyed hearing the music last night at sittin round da fire. Yer right, I would be fine wifout it, but it's really jus to entertain myself. So, if i see ya comin down da trail, i'll put it away. maybe after a couple drinks, i can talk ya into singin a couple with me.”

“hmmm, this is the first time I've seen people trashing guitar players in the woods on this site. You people obviously hike over-crowded places. I bring a guitar either as a companion if I'm solo or if requested by the people I'm with. And I'm far enough from the east coast that I never have to share a shelter or fenced yard with strangers.

Back to the guitar, I think the mini acoustic guitars all sound like crap, Martins & Taylors included. Therefore my philosophy is take a disposable guitar that you won't grieve over if you break it (I have the same philosophy with cameras). I had a 3/4 size classical for a long time and broke it on a trip last fall (the nylon strings don't rust and that was a plus). It was a cheap piece of crap but was similar in sound to a good brandname mini guitar, just cheaper. It sounded better the further I got from the trailhead. The other day I found a $39.95 special made in China guitar for a trip next week. The cheap ones are lighter too. That's the way I go.

My daughter has an Ovation Standard Balladeer thin body made in USA that would be a good backpack guitar and sounds great. But if you step on it, drop it off a cliff, or get it ripped off it would be painful and cost $600.”

“toejam - I happen to like my Martin backpacker - it's not like my Martin D-12-28, but it works in a pinch.
