Well, I finally got my pictures back from the Gibbs Lake snowshoe trip. Check them out at

Enjoy! U

I thought I was the only person that stopped to smell the Ponderosa's. The people I hike with think I'm crazy when I do that.

Cool.

Mike, it looks good! I guess I should start writing trip reports again, if I can find the time.

Poppycock wrote the TR for the San Gorgonio hike, so I'll add it to my website. The older trips have trip reports, but not photos (stolen by photopoint), and the new trips don't have TRs. Getting lazy, I guess.

I got the video in yesterdays mail. Will check it out tonight. Thanks!

Chief, The first time I found out about the smell of those trees was on a ranger-guided walk to Sentinel Dome in Yosemite. You'd think they would smell like pine.

Snow Nymph, Glad you liked it. I know what you mean about the time thing! What did you think of the video? I wish I had taken more. Always seems like that after the fact.

Pennsy Hiker, I'm glad you liked the report!

Nice trip! Short enough to convince the wife to go - I think we'll try it when the snow clears.

PS - I was taught that if the tree smelled like vanilla it was a Jeffrey pine. They are nearly identical to ponderosa and their ranges overlap. You can also differentiate the the two by their cones - "Gentle Jeffrey, prickly ponderosa".

I'm not real good at identifying trees and stuff. Another thing to work on.

I'm going to try to go back there late summer / early fall for a day hike and go all the way to Kidney Lake. Inquiring minds have to know!
