Ok, perhaps I was a little harsh...the handshakes still allowed....The matter of the card will have to be taken up at the next full meeting of "The Council".

Day hikes count for 1 point, but only if your car is parked near a park or wilderness area, and you must carry a day pack weighing no less then 15lb.

Geez, I get so let down when I read a thread like this. I am not offended that Wanderer asked the question, but I don't understand it's relevance. Why does anyone feel the need to have other posters justify whether or not they are "true" backpackers. I have never claimed to have alot of experience. I have been on one trip w/ two bag nights since I started posting here almost a yr. ago. I want to do it more and I read all the info. from more experienced bpers, but I obviously don't have too much to contribute at this point to gear and bag nights type threads. Wanderer, people have lives that do not always accomadate 100 bag nights a yr. or buying 2,000 dollars worth of gear. Why should that discount what they may be able to add to the "camp fire" atomsphere? What is the obession w/ having only bp threads? When you are out on the trail do you talk only about bping? I think that Phil has had some interesting threads about bping and such and I also read a great, funny thread he started about a TV show. Does that mean we shouldn't take anything more that he has to say about bping seriously? I live in rural MT and dayhike (I would prefer to call this going for a walk) quite often. Does that mean I have nothing to say, because my going for walks is not "bag nights?" I struggle to just get food on the table and have very little resources to devote to gear, does that mean I have nothing to say? So, those are my questions for you Wanderer? And I am honestly interested in a reply. I hope none of this comes off as offensive, I am just stating my opinions.

Dude, I live less than a mile from 3 different trailheads. The car never leaves the driveway. Don't you wish you lived in a National Forest?

The whole concept of going bush is that you are in one way or another thumbing your nose at society and convention. Ultimately the number of "Bag nights" is irrelevant. If you can go, you go. If you cant go, dont. Why justify it to anybody. The beauty of this site is that anybody can say almost anything. Just as you may not choose to walk for 5 days with 20kgs on your back, so it is that you dont have to read all the threads and for that matter agree with them.
Some people need to compete. They must have the best, they must do the hardest, they did it first and they are the best. Well good on 'em, go for it. Just do it......

Mtn. Steve! Take me with you!!!

Man, I got my first backpacking trip of the year coming up the week after next. Five days. All fun. It's gonna be friggin' GRRRRRRREAT!!!!! I'm going to be doing 14 consecutive days on the trail in June. Longest ever out in the backcountry for me personally. I'm very excited about that. I agree with a lot of what has been said on this thread. I'm into baackpacking because it's never the same trip twice, even if it's on the same trail. Always something unpredictable to happen. Always something new to learn and experience. I'm guaran-fecking-teed a great time. I'm all grins from the time my feet start pounding the trail until the time I drop that pack and unlace my boots back at the car. Even during the 2,000 foot elevation gain in a mile. Even during the lightening show and torrential downpour. Even during the sketchy tallus descent. If you get the most out of the experience you are having while you are out there with your pack on your back, just you and wild, then you are a backpacker.

nope. Had ya all fooled didn't I?! You thought I backpacked but you were wrong. No nights out EVER. As a matter of fact, I think you all are crazy for going out there in the forrest and submitting yourself to bugs that suck your blood and ivy that poisens you! What kind of maniacs are you?! STAY AT HOME AND WATCH THE OLN! Then you can just pretend to go out and backpack, like me. Now I have to find a new backpacking forum to pose on.
