For reliability: Nalgene. For ease of drinking while on the trail: platy with a drinking tube. I always carry a Nalgene as a back up drink container and a place to put left over boiled water from cooking for drinking later. It's necessary for making flavored drinks if you don't want your bladder to taste funky forever.” 11:13:57 AM 4/29/02 “I've got a couple of the Nalgene-knockoff Coleman widemouth bottles and a new MSR hydration system. The bottles are quite useful for a number of things so I'll probably always carry one with me. I think I'd rather have the DromLite bag for my hydration system. It seems more durable and Budder and I discussed it's advantages once when hiking together. I used to keep duct tape on my water bottle until I started using it for a bag warmer. Boiling water + tape adhesive = one seriously sticky mess. I would think it would have the same effect on stickers. I have never put stickers on mine.” 11:15:28 AM 4/29/02 “My kids used 16 oz. Nalgene they used in grade school when they carried their lunch. We froze kool-aid in them every school day for 7 years without a failure. They are still 100% 6 years later. I now carry a 1 litre soda bottle, only because the thread is the same as my platy and the "filter link" attachment on the end of my filter. I wouldn't trust anything filled with hot water in my sleeping bag but a Naglene tho!” 11:20:25 AM 4/29/02 “i love my hydration pack with its cool sensuous embrace really keeps me biting and sucking all the time. .... you asked!” 11:32:33 AM 4/29/02 “I still have (and use) my original Nalgene bottle which was purchased in 1974. It is plain white and the threads don't work with any filter since filtering back then meant using a bandana to remove chunks from your water. I recently bought a new colored Lexan one, basically to balance my pack since it has two water bottle mesh pockets and so I can screw my water filter into it. I happen to like the colored bottles, it helps me identify my bottle from everyone elses. Stickers? Nope. Logos? Who the hell cares? I suppose if it were on a new parka I might care...but it's a freaking water bottle. No one is gonna see the dang logo until I whip it out. So they're getting a little advertising on the side of it. Would you prefer they use pop-up ads on TT?” 12:41:12 PM 4/29/02 Anybody ever have... “an Oasis canteen? I started with one... total "Land of the Lost" style! I have a wide mouth nalgene now, and a 1 gallon collapsible carrier... I've never thought about putting stickers on them... I think I'd care more about the stickers than the bottles...” 12:52:20 PM 4/29/02 “I use a Camelback in a insulated carrier, this weekend my water didn't freeze. I put some hot water in it before going to bed. WingDings Blue Neon bottle had ice in it and Tekapo's Platy hose froze. Temps were in the 20s. I put hot water in the 12 oz bottle, and used it as a hand warmer while sitting out at night. Kept it on the legs for warmth, or under the jacket is nice too. Nigal, I have a Neon Orange Lexan spoon, so now its easy to find. Just got it last month.” 1:18:13 PM 4/29/02 I'm a Nalgene Addict! “I am, I admit it, and I'm okay with it. I have two of the 32 oz. smokey grey Lexans, one 16 oz. Lexan, the pink, orange, green, blue and purple colored ones too. I can't quite bring myself to buy the neon yellow though, but I'm sure I will in due time. They (whoever puts the lids on the things) almost tricked me into buying another smokey grey one--it had a black lid instead of the traditional blue--I thought they made a black bottle. I use the colored ones for motivation to get my arse to the gym--a different color each day of the week, Monday-Friday :)” 10:31:24 PM 4/29/02 “I won't hike with anything else. I prefer the dark "smoke" colored bottles. The new colors are too much. I say don't mess with it if it works. The only acception would be a dedicated red nalgene for other reasons.” 10:37:39 PM 4/29/02 “I have (4) 32 oz... They are great and have not yet broken. They collapse when I drive down from higher elevations, And then when I open the lid they eventually come back to normal form. As far a pee bottle. I use a gatorade bottle, marked with a skull and cross bones. And other writings, "DO NOT DRINK" "YUK" "NO WAY MAN" However, I have never used it. So far when I have taken it on trips. Nature has not awaken me up in the middle of the night. But, when I decide to leave it behind. Sure enough, I wake up, have to go and when I crawl out of my bag and out of the tent, it is butt freaking cold outside. But it is better than not making the trip....” 10:59:45 PM 4/29/02 “A thread about nalgenes???” 11:01:12 PM 4/29/02 “Pee Bottlers unite!” 12:11:11 AM 4/30/02 “Bad Spellers Untie!” 12:17:53 AM 4/30/02 “Pee Spellers Unite!!!” 12:23:10 AM 4/30/02 “I use the 32 oz. soft plastic bottle. My WaterworksII filter screws onto it, which makes water collection a breeze. I don't like the bladders. From my observation, they are too fragile and the bite valves are quirky. Colors? Who gives a rip?” 2:08:43 PM 4/30/02 “??? The only place I have ever seen a Nalgene bottle is in a lab. A bit overkill for backpacking! They're expensive” 6:22:15 PM 4/30/02 “Kleetn you must be a freak about cleaing it. I don't think I would keep anything from 1974. Much less something you put your lips on :P I had a pillow once that was like 25 years old. I think it had mites” 6:27:36 PM 4/30/02 “I have one, a pint size lexan deal. I use at work everyday and on my trips for my drink mixer and measurer.” 6:32:14 PM 4/30/02 Thumbs down to nalgene “I used to use the blue Lexan Nalgene bottle for camping. Then I realized that this is not the bottle to take if you want to shed the pounds. I now use it at work every now and then if I remember to grab it. No stickers. For backpacking I use 2 platypus collapsible containers. The weight is great; they don’t take up much space at all. And they have a large water capacity. The only thing about the nalgene that I like is it looks cool. I have heard of Mylar water bags as a platypus replacement. These Mylar bags are super super light, yet very strong. I cant imagine that are very expensive either since they are sold as liner bags for a water carrier. I have heard of people just using the Mylar bag. I think it is a great idea!!!! Good luck with the report.” 7:29:06 AM 8/21/02 To answer a question with a question... “Is a frog's a$$ water-tight?” 8:08:16 AM 8/21/02 “HA! whaddanut. i thought i'd lost mine the other day...i was nearly inconsolable.” 8:15:38 AM 8/21/02 “You thought you lost your frog's ass?” 8:26:15 AM 8/21/02 “ribbit” 8:31:10 AM 8/21/02 “ha-ha-ha! he-he-he! ho-ho-ho! damn wise-acres...” 8:33:01 AM 8/21/02 “Whadda Ya Want? Queen For A Day? BWAH-HAHAHAHahahahahahahahahaha... Was that a Beatles laugh or was that a Jerry Samuels? I think I stole that one from Dogbert.” 9:09:55 AM 8/21/02 “Hiker Guy - Though I agree that the Nalgene bottles are a little hearvier than a mylar bag, they are very useful. For colder conditions, I have the insulated carrier that they go into. Fill with soup and breakfast time and you have a great, hot lunch with little prep. I wouldn't try that with a mylar bag. My 32 oz bottles maybe weigh a couple of ounces, so to me, the weight justifies function. They also will not break as easy as a mylar bag.” 3:06:53 PM 8/21/02 “I read a lot of b|tching about the function/durability of hydration systems on this board. I have yet to read of anyone having a problem with the function/durability of their Nalgene bottle. Occasionally, simpler is better. 'Nuff said.” 3:37:49 PM 8/21/02 “My platypussies (or is it Playpus-I) do not have graduated ounce markers like my Nalgene does and frequently I need to know how much water to put in a freeze dried meal. I used to carry a big 32 oz Nalgene, but now carry a smaller 8 oz to measure out what I need. I tried a cheap-o rubber maid drink container once and it leaked. There's nothing like a nalgene - virtually indestructable, unless you put it too close to the edge of a rock near a swift running creek and it gets washed away like no tomorrow. Right Crazy Mike??” 4:12:58 PM 8/21/02 i use both “hydration system when hiking and i use a nalgene around camp for juice and stuff. i have one of the smaller bottles, good for eating out of if you don't want ot wash your pot” 4:14:07 PM 8/21/02 oh yea, i almost forgot “i work at a lab now and they use nalgenes all over the place. not the camping ones though, they're like industrial size with spouts at the bottom to pour easily. i thought that was the coolest part of my new job.” 4:15:13 PM 8/21/02 “I love mine! 8D” 4:22:21 PM 8/21/02 “yep Josh, the first nalgene's I saw were in the lab, late 70's. I didn't see them commercially in outdoors stores for another 10 or 15 years.” 4:27:45 PM 8/21/02 Water Bottles “As a Marine we have almost done away with canteens and use camelbaks instead, but I always carry two lexan 32 oz wide mouth nalgene bottles with me summer or winter. This year in a desert in Africa I was drinking 6 gallons of water per day. I mixed gatoraid in them. They are bombproof. I had to throw one of mine at a Camel. I also use mine when I backpack. I tried a platy for awhile but they weren't durable enough for me. I have duck tape on one and the other is covered with military unit stickers or at least was. I lost it in Croatia earlier this month.” 2:22:51 AM 8/22/02 Get Something That Will Last “Platypus = Planned Obsolescence I too love(d) my Platypus' till they kept getting holes in them. Try an MSR Dromadary Lite (2L or 4L) for longevity...and at least MSR's customer service will replace whatever goes wrong with them.” 4:25:08 AM 8/22/02 “I now use a hydration system for a water reservoir. It's my primary hydration source while hiking, and I hang it in camp for cooking/washing water and showers if needed. I usually use a nalgene bottle for mixing stuff and for sports drink, etc. It still doesn't have any stickers on it.” 4:32:25 AM 8/22/02 “so, do your-all's Nalgenes have names? i got some for my parents, and asked my mom what she was going to name hers. can you believe, she hadn't thought about it?? mine is green, so i call it Greeny, even though that's anti-creative. maybe her middle name should be Jeannie! as in nal-GENE.” 12:22:11 PM 6/06/03 “Or formally as Mrs. Green Jeans.” 12:24:16 PM 6/06/03 “GET HELP NOW, LYRA!!!!” 12:25:11 PM 6/06/03 “HA!! Green Jeans, i didn't even realize that! :-D” 12:28:19 PM 6/06/03 “I have 2 old Nalgenes kindly donated to me by Griz. They have a picture of a mtn. loin on them and say Nalgene Trail Products. I like them, but don't carry them around very often. They are way too trendy here. And, oddly enough, I have not named them.” 12:32:39 PM 6/06/03 “One of mine is with me every day at work for bottled water from the cooler. It's a one liter wide-mouth. Two stickers on it..."Suunto, replacing luck" and "boeri, it's your head." Have I named it? uhmmm....no...and I'm not sure why anyone would.” 12:36:45 PM 6/06/03 “A mountain loin,,,,wtf?” 12:38:11 PM 6/06/03 “I'll just wait for bitpusher to post the link to the 'what nalgene bottle are you?' quiz.” 12:38:32 PM 6/06/03 “LMAO!!!! good catch there, chili! i hear mountain loins go good with corn. and LMAO @ Violin...” 12:39:48 PM 6/06/03 “i actually just wanted an excuse to bring this thread back up, since i think it's hilarious.” 12:40:46 PM 6/06/03 “Mountain loins = innuendo.” 12:42:44 PM 6/06/03 “How does Greeny get along with all the monkeys?” 12:50:41 PM 6/06/03 “Sorry, about spelling mishaps peeps. I get to typing and . . . awful things always happen to me. Hey, Chili, did you ever find out anything on positions w/ the companies you mentioned to me via e-mail? I am looking for another job. A&F is a bit on the sucky side and they aren't giving me enough hrs.” 12:51:35 PM 6/06/03 why I love newgirl “Phaeidrus I believe that, in spite of her protests over the use of the word . . Newgirl really meant "Mountin' loin" It is possible she may have meant . . . "mount my loin" I think she did and it was a secret message meant for me.” 12:52:55 PM 6/06/03 “that's probably it, Lee! so, you got a job at A&F huh, newgirl? how come it sucks?” 12:54:02 PM 6/06/03
