Let me count the ways...
Hey all,

I'm actually writing a paper on Nalgene water bottles and I would like your input. Could you please tell me about what your Nalgene means to you? How about this new color thing? How do you feel about that? Do you put stickers are yours? Which kind of Nalgene do you buy and why?

Any other info would be great. Thanks!

Either reply to this postingor email me at afveit@stanford.edu.

I use them and love'em. I have two soft 96 oz, one that I use for camp and one for the trail with the Nalgene drink tube. My trail set up was cheaper for the size than a platy (20 bones total for 96 oz set up vs 25 bones for a quart or two platy). I also can carry two quart bottles in the OR insulated carriers, one is a Lexan and one is the white. I use them to carry either extra H2O or booze, depending on the hike. I don't really care about the colors. That to me is a yuppie thang. Stickers? Who would bother...

I have a few of the 'knock off' plastic 32 oz. styles cause their cheaper than the brand name lexan types and fill the some purpose. Good for either carrying water or trail snacks, just unscrew the top and pour in the mouth. I have duct tape wrapped around a few of mine. Stickers?

I hear HOI loves his Nalgene. I don't usually like to pry. You know, especially when it's something so, well, personal.

Overrated...
I've found the narrow mouth models ideal for alchohol flasks, but I have little use of them for anything else. They are just too bulky to use for water storage, when compared to other alternatives such as platypus, or MSR dromedary's why would I bother?

I have owned 3 nalagesns, 2 of them are the standered 32 oz lexane. Both of those have been lost at eather track practis of meets, but never on a trail. The other is the soft 32 oz , given to me by adventure trails, the company that bussed my crew from colarado springs to philmont.

I but the hard lexain onse because they have mesurments on the sides, and that you cout save weight and use the bottle as a bowl. After all, its got a big enought mouth.

I bought a couple of them things when I began backpacking. I didn't know better back then. A plastic water/soda bottle is all I need. I can't believe I fell for the hype and thought a nalgene was essential. What a rip-off... buying a container to hold water.

I bought one of the new GoCups that is like a bottle that screws into a measuring mug. I like the fact I can drink from it while measuring with the other piece. The bad thing is it doesn't seal. I also hate any piece of gear that has a non removable lable or logo on it.

I like my nalgene bottles. They are tough and come in pretty colors. I have two 32 ounce lexan wide-mouth models. I bought the drinking tube set up so i can drink out of them like a platypus.

I carry the 12 oz (dark) bottle to mix my Cytomax in (easy to clean). I use the 70 oz zip bag to carry/pump water. I use the small collapsable one while snowboarding, fits in my pocket. Found a really small one at REI last week, paid too much for it, but its the right size to carry a little wine for those overnighters.

I know what you mean Nigal, I hate to be used as a walking billboard. I love my new Marmot tent but does it have to have the logo on 3 sides? I love my new rain shell, but does it have to have the Sierra Designs logo on the front of it? It wouldn't be so bad if they were a little more discrete. As it is I feel like a freakin' walking magazine ad. It's embarassing.

On the other hand, there is some gear that I have that I would like to replace with exactly the same thing made by the same manufacturer because it's perfect to me. Problem is, I either removed the labeling or it wore off and I have had it so long I no longer remember who made it or even where I got it. And so the search begins...(cue Mission Impossible theme music)

I use the 16oz bottle to mix Crystal Light and when hiking in the desert, I carry two 46 oz Nalgene Canteens for water, if the springs are wet and I can filter at each campsite, they collapse well and weigh next to nothing. When water is scarce and I can fill them up at a water source or cache and the relatively flat shape packs well on top of the rest of the gear in my pack.

water bottles, the saga
I've got: two platypuses, a 1.6l and a 2.5l. I also carry a 16oz plastic soda bottle for mixing gatorade, and I just started carrying a collapsable one gallon water container for transporting unfiltered water from the stream to wherever I have my filter system rigged. Easier than trying to fill the flat, collapsable reservoir of my water filter, plus I have a whole GALLON of water if I want it.

I Love My MSR Drama-Lites Better
I don't se my 2 32oz hardplastic Nalgenes for hiking anymore, but I still use them alot as waterbottles that I bring with me in the car.

I gave up on the collapsible Nalgenes after the 8th one(Yeah, I've had about 8 so far) because they eventually leak (if not a poked hole, one forms where the bottle kinks when it goes from empty to full to empty to full, etc.) I only have 2 good ones left now.

I have a couple 2L MSR drama-lites that have replace all other waterbottles and I don't forsee them leaking in the not too distant future.

Oh I forgot, I hate the neon ones. If I have to have something that dang bright to keep track of it maybe I should have it tied around my neck. Now when are they gonna make neon lexan spoons? Now THAT would be a winner. I'm always losing that damn thing.

I used to poo-poo nalgenes. I thought a rubbermade bottle was just as good, and lighter. I bought one recently to carry adult beverages in on a weekend trip. I love it. Ended up getting an 18oz small mouth, brilliant yellow one. I chose the color so I wouldn't mix mine up with someone else's. I find I'm using it a whole lot more than my rubbermade bottle. I use a camelback or platypus system for water though and wouldn't trade them for all the nalgene bottles in the world.

I love my nalgene. I buy the lexan (got all blue neon ones at Popular Outdoor Outfitters), and lexan lasts forever.

If you have access to nalgene's lab supply catalog, you can get bottles for a fraction of the price, but they don't usually have wide mouths, and I don't know if you can get lexan. Neon colors, I doubt.

Doesn't anybody just use recycled pop bottles ? - I use 32 oz Mt Dew bottles. They are free and can survive being frozen solid.

I have used regular water bottles, like Aquafina and such. They worked for me to a point. I have had them fail in real cold weather and don't stand up to abuse that well,IMHO. After replacing 3 of them, I relized that that added up to one Nalgene bottle in price, so just cut right to the case and bought two. They don't handle hot liquids that well and no matter how much I wash them, they still retain the taste of what ever liquid was in them before.

old fashion
I still use the 2 soft plastic Nalgene wide mouth 32 oz'ers I bought in 1993 when I first started backpacking. I still have use a pack that has pockets for these on the outside. They taste a little funny if water has been sitting in them over a day. I was afraid the lexan wouldn't be durable but somebody gave me a Colman lexan 32 oz'er and it's great, without the funny taste, and bounces off concrete pretty well.

No stickers, no colors and absolutely.....

I have stickers on mine, mister. do you have a problem with that? :)

My car is a company car so I can't put stickers on it. So, I have a few on my bottles. Primarily, it helps to tell them apart from others. I've hiked w/ a group where each of us had a blue nalgene and w/out the stickers ya never knew whose was whose.

I have a 1 litre narrow lexan that I have for work and for trips O.S. for Hiking at home I'll use a bladder of some description, Ultimate Directions, platypus, Gregory or Source. I use to have an Aluminium Sigg bottle that I loved until I dropped it and it cracked. I bought a wide mouth nalgene, but got sick of the water going up my nose when ever I drank from it. The narrow mouth lexan has survived a battle with a dishwasher element (I had to replace the melted lid) and a serious game of soccer. It's also beent to India/Nepal a couple of times where it is my back up water bottle and my hot water bottle.

I found my 32 oz, wide mouth nalgene on a trail inside a EMS insulated carrier. I never use the carrier, too much added weight but I use the Nalgene bottle all the time. I now have a hydration system for my packs, so I'm thinking I'll only need it for wine or other beverage of choice. I have a nice, large size stainless cup for camp coffee, soup, etc.

As far as colors go, I'd buy a prettier color but don't because they charge more for colors.

i don't use them much any more. i use a platy hydration bladder and carry a msr dromalite for extra water capacity. i will continue to carry one in the cold weather. i put hot water in it and use it to warm my sleeping bag and keep my feet warm on the colder nights.

baume 66,

I have a MSR dromadory for water at the campsite. I LOVE that thing. I thought about getting an adapter to use it for a hydration system but thought better of it because of the angle the hose would lead off the bladder.

I forgot about the bag warmer use of the Nalgene. My Nalgene has never leaked but every other bottle I've used does.
