At an afternoon meeting today, my employer bluntly decreed that all employees were taking a 10% pay cut. Effective from when we punched in this morning.

I was marginally happy with the deal I had, I do not want to work for less.

They will not issue layoffs; I was told if I want to work to be there in the morning just like always.

Would not showing up under these conditions prevent receiving unemployment?

Seems like a raw deal to me...

Sorry dude. That blowz.

I think you have to be terminated to collect unemployment.

You Cann Apply For Unemployment.....
but it doesn't mean you will receive it. In WY the employer can protest if you apply. Generally though, if you quit, you are screwed. Check with the unemployment office.

I went through a 10% pay cut quite some time ago. It was with a major oil & gas producer. About 16 months later, all cuts were reinstated, with small raises. Still a net loss.

p.s. at the same time they quit matching in the 401K plan. Another 6%.

Yea, they nixed the 401K matches, too.

Even if you do stay, it sounds like there could be more problems over the horizon. Cutting salaries and benefits is not the M.O. of a growing company. Don't want to make it worse than it is, but it would sure have been better if they involved the company employees and let you know what the "whole picture" looked like, including a prognosis for recovery.

A wage concession is something you give back, not something they take back.

What this is call is a good old fashion ***** job right up the old ****hole.

In all seriousness though, it could be that your company is in some sort of real financial straits and needs to cut back to be viable. Why don't you check to see if the top execs are being treated the same........

LeSubtil, I can only tell you this. I would show up at my job minus 10% and knowing that I would receive a swift kick to the jimmy everyday at noon. I cant afford to leave. I hope you find the answer you need. W

Not showing up will disqualify you for unemployment. Not match 401K, as said before, is not a good sign. Rollover the 401k as you walk out the door to your new job.

The last place I worked for did the same thing. I was lucky, I found another job that I'm happier at and making more money than my pay to boot.

It's probably time to go.

Ah! The old Lee Iakoka deal! He was the only one who ever pulled it off well an made a difference. Did you ask the brass how much THEIR cuts were?

I say check your emotions and go conservative. Show up to work and cut your productivity by 10% and start preparing for the future. It can be a bit shaky not having something else lined up first. Besides, don't you have some paid tim off coming up? Always use up the PTO before leaving.

You are a very smart resourcfull guy and I know you can do anything you set your mind to.

I feel for you LeSubtil.

I just got a call this morning from Birch. He let me know the Union President for our dept took him aside and told him I'd be losing my part time job. I'd be able to choose from full time or no time. I called the plant operations director and he would neither confirm nor deny. I begged and pleaded for two years to get part time. I've had it since Sept.

Damn! That sucks! I hate to sound cheesy here but G-d never closes a door without opening a window. Consult Him and see what direction He has in store for you. This may be a huge turning point in your life to persue something you absolutely LOVE and still remain part time. I hope it works out the way want it to.

Always rally around the ones closest to you.....

It's always darkest before the dawn

when your world is weary,
when all is dark,
when dreams die and fade away,
and all of life is stark,
take heart in gentle love,
for she waits in the wings,
and where she walks,
fairies dance and angels sing,
though you cannot see her,
she weaves a silken touch,
leaving footprints in the sand,
sprinkling spells and such,
lighting the dampened corridors,
the dark corners of your mind,
leaving you breathless,
bewildered by her kind,
goodness glints in her eyes,
hope is in her arms,
and all you've ever dreamed of,
rests sweetly in her charms.

Geez...
and to think I was feeling crappy about the "low" 3% raise I have coming. Keep your chin up!

I disagree about cutting your performance by 10%...
their underhandedness does not disqualify your obligation to perform at the top of your game.
...it's all about feeling good about your work.

Job abandonment would automatically disqualify unemployment insurance in GA.

Hey?!
Weren't you looking for a job when you found this one? Plug away -
you'll do fine.

Good luck,
Joe

If I was forced to take a %10 pay cut it would kill me... I'd either quit on the spot or spend a couple weeks using %10 of my day looking for a new job...

Today is the first day of the rest of your life
This may be your lucky day. What a perfect excuse for leaving. Get yourself another job for more money and leave this sinking ship, before the rats get ya.

Every time a job got crappy I left and was better off for it.

I hope something works out for you LeSub. It's too bad.

Sass, I understand how you feel. I struggle everyday w/ having more money by working full-time and having more time w/ Newergirl by going part-time. It is such a hard decision. You want to provide, but you also want to be the one raising your daughter. If you think you and Birch can swing it for awhile I would quit, before going full-time. Unless, you and Birch can work opposite shifts so someone is always w/ Abbey. Of course, that can be hard on the marriage. I wish you luck.

I agree with most of the above. Either the management are in big trouble financially or they are stupid and nasty (or both). Either way its time for some job hunting. It seems like this a good way to make sure that most of the people who can find other work will and the ones who can't will stay. Its not exactly a formula for upgrading the quality of your workforce.

How cyclical is your business?
