What's at your birdfeeder?

“Our Mourning Doves are VERY SKITTISH and fly off if you breath too loudly! We have Buicks Wrens that are just the tiniest and cutest, they peep so sweet as they rustle threw the leaves under the bushes. Lately they are loving the Liquid Amber seeds. Do you know what doggie toys sound like when they are squeezed, that slight breathy little peep? That's what our wrens sound like. They have a pretty song too.”

“Cool! I almost hit a hawk yesterday. It was chasing a sparrow and the little guy flew into the truck in front of me. I had one confused hawk dodging my little car for what felt like minutes. It was beautiful (and it survived).

Not much at the feeders, as one is broken and stuck shut and the other is mostly empty. I'll have to put that on my list of things to do...”

“It's such a joy to sit on my porch in the morning with my coffee and ciggarette and watch all the little birdies go at the feeders. I love mornings.”

“When I came home from exercising this a m I fed my feather friedns...when I went to leave for work the place was covered!!! I had the 3 RED cardinals that seemed to glow they were so bright!

I would love to sit out and watch mine in the morning but it was 10 this morning!!!”

“I was unloading yet more boxes from the car this morning and a big old crow waddled into the garage to check me and its contents out. It briefly checked out the recently emptied boxes, then wandered out and left. I see I'll have problems with this one.”

I was watching two crows that perch outside the trees behind the building at work..they are very smart creatures! Amazingly smart!!!”

Treebait, are you sure they weren't ravens? Ravens are bigger, in flight you can see that their tails, rather than looking straight cut across, look rounded. Ravens are highly intelligent and can be taught to talk if you have one from birth. Of course like all wild birds, they are protected. Ravens and crows are very family oriented and will stay together for generations, aunts and uncles included. Makes you think a little differently about them, doesn't it? People seem to hate these birds for some reason, Stephen King uses them as harbingers of evil/death in his books. In Indian cultures, the owl is the harbinger of death.”

“saw two Western Bluebirds this morning, they were flycatching”

“Nothing. The birds aren't moving much, it's too cold.”

“There's been a flock of 18" to 2' tall ibises running around our neighborhood for the past several weeks in Florida. This morning they're in both my front and back yard, eating bugs and terrifying the cats. There's about 27 of them.

“that is so cool! i remember a hike into a coastal canyon that we took with all the kids many years ago, and at the end where it was really marshy, we saw a beautiful white heron just sitting so peacefully in a tree. it was the first time i had ever seen one and i remember thinking how absolutely large he seemed to me.”

I was going out to the car this morning and heard this awful noise above me...I looked up and there were two Canadian Geese flying south. Bless their hearts it took so long to get cold here they probably hung out for awhile and now they have relized winter is here!!!”

“A couple of days ago we had two Western Bluebirds, they were beautiful even if a little dull colored. Maybe it's the time of year and they'll brighten up with spring? Not sure.

I was finally able to get to Wal-Mart and pick up 50lbs of birdseed and another bag of blackoil sunflower seed; the birds are very very happy! They are bouncing all over the place out there! Flitting, singing, chasing! I saw an Oregon Junco today.”

“We have the standard dark eyed juncos, sparrows, red bellied and downey woodpeckers. BUT, this is the first day the birds have been out in about four. It's warmed up considerably today.”

“I put the feeder out for the chicadee's. However it's attracted morning doves but they usually knock the seed out. This attracts squirrels. I generally dry out seeds from fruit & vegtables & plant them. On top of feasting on my bird feeder, these squirrels have dug up every seed & pit I've planted.

They're having a little trouble lately. Think I have to sign them up for weight watchers.”

“There's a photo in the local paper of a robin in the neighborhood, eating a berry This past week. There was snow on the tree.

Mind you this is in Chicago area, where the temps have been subzero and windchills -20 to-30.

But then maybe it was just windburn on the some other bird.”

“yeah I'm in the middle of Virginia - the northern flickers were the yellow shafted form but otherwise identical to your pics - they were ground feeding looking for bugs/ants I think”

“I had a turkey vulture keeping me company at our house in FLorida yesterday. I think he's mad I got rid of the dead raccoon I found in the garden shed.”

“I saw an Eagle trying to fly off with a muskrat the other day, right next to a road killed deer. I'm still curious about the story. Did the muskrat kill the deer, gorge himself and the Eagle swoop down? Or, did the Eagle kill the deer and the muskrat attack its' claws with his abdomen?”

I'm guessing the eagle had the muskrat, stopped by the deer just to check it out before taking the rat back to it's aerie to dine, or perhaps feed someone else.


Great news, the house finches are getting bright purple again!! Spring is coming.

We went up to Lake Wilburn/watagua Damn near Elizabethton TN Saturday and I was so excited to see three Peliated (sp) woodpeckers, and nurmerous ducks ..that I can't name. I went to take pics of the ducks but they were too far away to get a good pic...my zoom wasn't close enough :-(

Was still a nice drive and awesome lake!”

“I have the sweetest sparrow outside my window at work. It sits in the dogwood tree and sings to me every morning! What a job perk, huh???”

“Sounds like you have a nice office. Can't beat a dogwood outside the window complete w/ singing sparrow.”

“All the little Sparrows and Finches scattered, Steve got up to look and the Peregrin Falcon was sitting on our porch fence. Then he flew up to the tree to wait, we are watching and waiting with him. The Crows are keeping close watch too.

We've had rain since last night, it's abated some with a burst of sunshine through the clouds. Our Liquid Amber's buds have finally turned green and a few have burst with tiny tiny leaves.

Over the weekend while I was gone to Joshua Tree with the troop, Steve got to see the Falcon pick off a Mourning Dove in mid flight, he said it was incredible.”

“Ok, so it wasn't at my feeder. And it was too dark to SEE them, (2:15am at the time). But while I was sittin on the porch tonight, I heard Bats!”

“HOI, we have some bluebirds hanging out at out new house, despite a total lack of trees on the high part of the lot where the house is. They look like fast blue comets zooming back and forth.

I have tons of finches, who are demolishing my future lawn, aka eating the grass seed.”
