What's at your birdfeeder?

“Saw an indigo bunting yesterday when backpacking. My "newbie" friend knows birds and has a whole bird playground at his place.”

“This past weekend I saw, from the kayak, several scarlet tanagers, male and female, a couple of indigo buntings, a cedar waxwing, some ravens (we don't see them below the bridge often), and an eagle. Also, common mergansers, male and female.

It amazed me how many more birds one sees from the river, than from the trail.”

“House finches, cardinals, brown-headed cowbirds, bluejays, mourning doves, tufted tit(mice?), black-capped chickadees, juncos, lark sparrows and arrow-shy squirrels (they shag @ss at the sound of the kitchen window being raised since the demise of Psycho Squirrel and his cousins...).”

“I can see my birdfeeders from my desk here at home.

We have a whole array of birds again this year. Most of the action this morning is a pair of bluejays. They sure are bossy at the feeder, but they're beautiful. Let's see. Also some tufted titmice, a couple chickadees and we have three families of bluebirds. I put up more bluebird boxes last year and it's really paid off.”

“No sign of the starlings yet (big obnoxious, ugly black birds #%*@)”

“Not at my birdfeeder, but it is the time of the year to visit Bosque del Apache. I saw sandhill cranes overhead yesterday.”

“Had a yellow shafted ficker today. Finally the juncos and titmice and chickadees are making a come-back after west nile wiped them all out. Everytime I see a junco it makes me happy. I missed them.”

“Our neighbor cat hangs out at ours. Our pointer almost caught it two weeks ago. I never saw that cat move so fast, lol.”

“This past fall someone in my town had a regular visitor to their birdfeeder, a black bear.”

“We had a black bear visit underneath our feeders this year. He was eating the seed from the ground, but couldn't get at the feeders because they are strung high up on a line. I lower the line and cleat it off when I want to fill the feeders. I took down the feeders for 3 weeks after the first bear visit. The bear came back a couple of times looking for food, but realized that it was gone.

Up until we got the two feet of snow this weekend, there was a family of five racoon that would visit almost every night digging through the seed that had fallen on the ground.

We also have the regular visitors...blue jays, a cardinal, red squirrels, chipmunks and a bunch of others. The squirrels and chipmunks are fun to watch in the winter as they emerge from their tunnels through the snow.”

“I feed 4 birds in my house.”

“I have 7 titmice, 3 cardinals, a bluejay who's actually more purple than blue, and 2 brown thrashers. And one cat.”

“I have a neighborhood skunk. I hate him.”

“This is the first thread I thought of to post this; there's a squirrel stuck on my parents' screened in porch. Their little dog is out there, but hasn't looked up yet. This is going to be good. The squirrel is at one end, up at the top of the screen, and the door is propped open at the other end. Tree rat versus terrier!”

“Who do you have your money on, TB?”

“Well, it was on the dog but she got bored and is now lying by the pool. The squirrel hasn't budged, and is watching me through the glass door.”

“Hmmmm, I bet Geo would love to see this death match.”

“Geo would be tossing bits of meat near the squirrel to get the dog going...”

“Rats I think.”

“Today I saw Eastern Sparrows a black bird Cardnals Juncos.A Blue Jay.

“Well, the squirrel is finally out and the dog almost stroked out. The dog could not get the squirrel and was starting to push out a large section of screen, so I intervened. I used a telescoping pool skimmer to try and get the squirrel off the screen. 10 minutes of that and no luck. So I just started poking at it, trying to at least get it to run towrads the door. Next thing I know this damned thing is on my head and peeing down my back. I chased it around, and it finaaly ran headlong into the door, then out, then into and out of the pool, up the fence and up an oak tree. Sheesh. I had to borrow a shirt from my Mom. Mine is getting washed.”

“The bastidge got back on the porch a while ago, trying to hide a nut in a big teapot my Mom displays out there. Its trying to go for 3 now, but the door is shut and the dog is loose.”

“I have a similar problem in my carport. There's no ceiling in it, so the soffit spaces are open, and this year, the squirrels figured out they can store nuts in there. The damn things chatter at me and are no doubt doing damage to the structure (little turds) so I'm thinking about getting a pellet gun and going after them while my kids are gone sometime.”

“Yeah, but you ought to see a squirrel trying to shove a nut in a teapot that hold more than a gallon.”

“If I'm here at my parents tomorrow, I'm bringing the camera. I have to get a picture of this!”
