Oh to be 3 inches shorter...
So I was in REI yesterday... I spent a lot of money, but wasn't able to get a number of things I needed doe to the fact that since I am 6' 4" I have long arms and legs. 32" and 34" inseams on pants aren't going to cut it for me. Most shirts, fleeces, coats, etc. don't have sleeves long enough for me. Any ideas where to find trail clothes with a wider (errr... taller) variety of sizes?

Talk to Buddha Bear...that dude even has trekking poles that're extra long.

I've had some good luck at the Cabela's bargain cave for that kind of stuff. You might check out their catalogues.

I run into similar trouble at 6'6". I usually have to order something from a catalog rather than pick it up in the stores. I miss out on a lot of sales that way though.

Being tall is cool. Water crossings are easier. And if I lengthen my stride, I can do two steps for a short person's three. The only drawbacks are steel cord suspension bridges when my center of gravity is above the handrail and medium height tree obstacles on the trail.

Another member of the tall guy club here.

I hate it when I get whacked by low hanging branches.

People ask why I make or have to alter all of my gear.Get a machine, learn how to sew,it's nice having a jacket with sleeves long enough, without the body of a circus tent.I'm thinking of a new macine so I can make my own little logos.Sometimes my creations have a homey look, but if people want fashion they can get a close look at the back of my briefs.

Biz, what did we every do to you? ;-)

So, how would you like to be 6'1" with a 32" inseam? pants aren't a problem, but shirts with long tails can be.

Being somewhat vertically challenged myself, I have found that it actually comes in quite handy on the trail when negotiating low-hanging tree limbs, saw briars, etc.
Hey, Pathman, does she have a flat head?

Biz, short people have a lot of uses. Don't be so defensive.

You short people are good for lots of stuff. I can't think of anything right now, but I'm pretty sure there's lots of things.

Hey, Scabby Pete. I am 6'4, too. I have long arms, wide shoulders, a long torso, but short legs (34" pants inseam). I like to buy my outdoors clothing from L.L. Bean. Most of their stuff is available in tall sizes, and their tall shirts and jackets fit me well.

I have a friend who's 4'8". If anyone teases her about her height she tells them she'd rather be vertically challenged than horizontally challenged. They usually stop teasing her.

Father Goose, the phrase horizontally challenged is intended to go the way of 'developmentally challenged' (ie. challenged = impaired). Given your interpretation it would be a very foolhearty thing indeed!

I've got a different problem than a few of you, I tend to run into the XXL sizes. Sure I could stand to losea few pounds, but when I graduated high school I weighed in at 235 with a 9% body fat. I am now at 250 and have lost a bit of muscle mass, but I don't think I could ever consistantly fit comfortably into XL's. Go to your local gear store and look for XXL jacket, if they are there they are all pink or something.

A guy I work with is 6'7"

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what kind of backpack he should look at? Do they make them for people that tall ??

You'd be surprised, a large will probably fit him fine. It doesn't really matter how tall you are, it's your torso length that counts. At Trail Days, the guy who owns Gregory measured a guy who was 6'5" as a medium. So torso length what he should have measured.

I am 6'6 and need a small hip belt. Any pack will fit anyone as long as they have the interchangable harnesses, which is primarly the higher end packs.

I like Gergory packs. I like them because of there hip belts. They are very comfortable for me.

For a tall guy, make sure you get a very experienced sales person who knows how to fit a pack on a person. I was hiking with a guy and he had a great North Face pack that he got online. It is did not fit him well at all because he had the wrong size harness for his body. He did not know how to tell if the pack fit him.

Hope this helps.

HPM is 6',6". He has a dana designs terraplane, a kelty flight, and a camp trails external frame (older than dirt. The only one good for his posture!) Height is not necessarily a factor, but spinal length is.

Osprey has a great sizeing system that they include with the packs or you can view online.
