They are great. Mine is the 8' x 10' sil tarp from campmor. I paid $59 and it is well worth it. Siltarps and shelters are never on sale. At least I've never seen any.

I only use my ID Sil Shelter in cold weather. That way I'm not concerned with bugs.

I've used it in lots of wet/rain conditions and if you seal it up properly you will stay dry. It has just enough room for me and my gear. Do a good job sealing the seams or you will be sorry.

I use 7 stakes to pitch it but would could use more in windy weather. I also use a thin piece of plastic as a ground cloth and place my sleeping pad on it.

Yeah, they're not cheap but I like them.

I have a netting thing I made from cheap wedding veil that hangs from the inside of the tarp. Campmor sells some nice netting things that weigh like 3-8 oz.

If you can sew or know someone...
You can get some mesh here and make a mesh insert for it.

Large Sil Tarp- 10oz
Outdorr Resaerch Bug Bivey- 13oz.

I am going to try this new setup and can report on it. This way I have a two person shelter with bug protection. My friend will be carrying his own bug bivey and the stakes.

I've been eyeballing a similar set up, Arc. Be sure to let us know how it works out, especially the tarp pitched over hte bug bivy.

i was thinking of the or bug bivy too, cause it has a floor so it eliminates the need for a groundcloth. for when there's no bugs i was thinking of getting bacpac's 6.5 oz campmor emergency blanket. (the first piece of advice i've ever taken from bacpac.)
mds, when i saw your setup on the at trip in march i decided i had to have one. i was looking at em before that but i was thinking more of just the double tarp but i really like the silshelter.

Sil Shelters
I have a new one coming from
http://www.ula-equipment.com/pages/ULA-home.htm
$134.00 W/shipping
I will be using my bivy bag with it.
Depends on the weather, under the stars or the shelter. A little idea I picked up from CC.

Here's an old thread that helped me figure out my bugproof tarp solution. In my opinion Campmor has the best deal goin' for a sil tarp.

I have the 10x12 siltarp from Campmor - it's great, but a bit large. Thinking about trimming it down a bit. Good for Spring and Fall backpacking here in the Northeast when the bugs are down. I'm seriously considering buying the MRS Bug Hut II -- Lightweight, self-standing mesh tent with floor - good for Summer buggy season, and for under the tarp when rain threatens. It's formerly the Walrus Bug Hut II, only with a higher price tag. Check it out at...

i figured it out
im gonna go with the sil shelter for $134. thanks old timer, and bacpac's groundsheet/space blanket, and the hiker mosquito net from campmor.
for a grand total of 25.5 oz., going by 14 oz for the silshelter, 6.5 for the groundtarp, and 5 for the mosquito net.

sil poncho
get the sil poncho and your raingear/shelter/pack cover will weigh a mere 10oz... can be used alone or in conjuction w/ a bivy... i've used this piece of gear and won't go back to toting gore-tex unless i know i'll be taking extended hikes in very rainy conditions...

Josh, check those sites again,
this in what I got;

http://www.ula-equipment.com/pages/ULA-home.htm

Weight 22oz $125.00 plus shipping

This is what Dunk got;

http://www.integraldesigns.com/tarps-frame.htm

Weight 16.5oz $150.00 plus shipping.

Sorry if I mislead you. The ULA has side pullouts which gives it a little more usable space for two, the reason I chose it over the ID.

Oldtimer, we'll have to compare in the Alps next week, I've not received mine yet however and called Backcountry Gear to see what the status of my order is. They've got 7 working days to get me my shelter.

The Integral Designs siltarp is 55 bucks for a 6x8 at REI right now, the reason I bring this up is because I am considering getting one myself. I would like to here from anyone who has used just the siltarp for a tent/shelter. It looks like a great idea but does it work?

walkindude uses one. I have an 8x10 siltarp I've used a couple of times, but it's not the Integral Designs model. I've never used one in the rain though. You might want to consider the larger one if you're going to use it as your main shelter. 6'x 8' is like a tunnel if you pitch it close to the ground.

I use the ID sil-shelter in the cooler months of the year when the bugs are gone. Pitching it isn't always simple, but I like the weight of it and it keeps me dry.

Last January? on the TT Sipsey trip, my pack was under it all day while it was raining and nothing got wet.

Here's the siltarp I have. It's not as nice as the ID model, but it's a lot cheaper than their 8x10. If I had to decide between the Campmor 6x8, and the ID 5x8, I'd definitely go with the ID though. More tie-outs.

I have an Oware 6x8 sil tarp which is basically the same as the ID with the tie outs. I used it once on an overnight trip, but it didn't rain. After having used it as a hideout for sudden showers on backcountry flyfishing day trips, I would think you would stay dry in there if there wasn't much shifting wind and the rain isn't wind blown. Location matters too. If it's windy, I suppose some type of bivy or bag cover would help. I don't have a bivy so I would use my bigger tarp if I knew heavy weather was on the way for more than an overnighter. Most people seem to be using the 8x10. The 6x8 makes a nice vestibule in front of one of my tents so for that it's nice.

I have an 8x10 Siltarp. I stayed absolutey dry while it rained and poured most of Saturday night.

This is how I pitch it.

Oware sil tarp
I have a 9X9 sil tarp that I use year round. It is great protection from heavy rain and snow. I pitch it over my Hennessey hammock (I don't use the small tarp that comes with the Hennessey because the 9X9 allows premium dry space to hang out in during storms) in the summer months and pitch it in many other formations the rest of the year.

Make your own. Get the instructions from Henry Shire's website www.tarptent.com. You can buy the kit with most of everything you need @ Thru-Hiker.com for about $65. A shelter for 2 with bug netting @ 24 oz (including weight of poles and stakes) is hard to beat.
