Your vegetarian recipes wanted
Your Vegetarian Backpacking Recipes Wanted!

Hi! My name is Christine Conners and my husband and I wrote Lipsmackin’ Backpackin’, a collection of lightweight recipes from over 60 contributors. Tim and I recently signed a contract to write a second version of the book: Lipsmackin’ Vegetarian Backpackin’’ and we want your recipes! All recipes much be original and meatless to be considered.

We currently donate twenty-five percent of the royalties from Lipsmackin’ Backpackin’ to the Pacific Crest Trail Association. We will also be donating the same percentage from the second book to a National Scenic Trail, but this time we are asking our contributors to choose which trail will receive this donation. Contributors whose recipes are included in the book will be recognized in the text and receive a free copy of Lipsmackin’ Vegetarian Backpackin’, courtesy of Globe-Pequot Press.

Recipes can be submitted via the website, e-mail or snail mail:

I can't seem to find vegetarian in my local grocery store. Do I have to hunt it myself?

It usually is the animal I referred to in my previous post. Sometimes it will be a deer or something, though.

Actually, very little of what I eat on the trail contains meat. It has nothing to do with vegetarianism. Meat is hard to pack. Freeze dried meat is expensive. It is easy to go without it for a week. I keep it simple so I doubt any thing I cook would be interesting enough for a cook book.

What mtn gal said. Your thread does appear somewhat trollish. If not, we apologise (right, guys?).

I've noticed that many of the vegetarians in my locale seem thin and weak, with a pasty and unhealthy-appearing complexion, no doubt from malnutrition as this area does not offer the proper forage for them. Do any of you live in an area with more robust specimens of vegetarians?

I've heard that Berkeley, California is a good area for vegetarians. Is this true?

i think the addage, "Eat People, Not Animals" takes on a whole new meaning here at TT...

Bagged myself a spiked 5 pointer the other day still in his winter hemp coat!

Field dressing 'em in Berkeley can get dicey, but other than that, it's good ground!

After a year on the veggie diet I'm back on the gravy train. That first porterhouse was orgazmic! I went over and checked out the site. Looks like a cook book. There are some sample PFDs to look at from the first book. I submitted one and am working on another.

What seems "trollish" about this thread?!

Wish I could help you Christine...I don't have an orignal recipe in my box. Good luck, and may I suggest the NCT? It needs all the help it can get.

Man, why all the vegan bashing? The post wasn't even the extremist vegan "Holier than thou" type of post? Which leads me to the question, are meat eaters more offened by vegans the vegans are of meateaters? While I was meatless I experienced outright contemp for my diet so it is a bit erksome.

YES, DAMMIT, NIGAL!!!!

You're crapping on me, my parents, my ancestors and millions of years of evolution by being a damn VEGAN!

My people worked damn hard to get to the top of the food chain, and I'm not gonna let some hair-matted, patchouli-wearing, granola-munching crystal hugger undo all the good work we've done to enslave the animals!!

EAT OR BE EATEN!!!

I work in PETA town, Norfolk, Virginia(their headquarters is located here), and I have to listen to those guys and girls everyday. So now the squirel huggers can listen to us for Just a little bit. Remember, cows are vegetarians ... and we eat them.

PETA really pisses me off. The latest crusade from the canvas-shoe -wearers is against honey and silk. That's right, folks we're being cruel to insects.

I don't think she ever indicated one way or the other what her preference is, this is for a book she's writing. I doubt that she would be seeking anyone's approval anyway.

Nigal, I also practice vegetarianism occasionally for years at a time. I don't mean to mock or degrade anyone with my posts, just to add humor and have fun. If you've been offended, I apologize.

I used to run a small diner where I served an all vegetarian barbecue. I was making a lot of money on it, but had to close it down. People were asking too many questions about the missing vegetarians.

Vegetarian Does
I understand from other hunters that bagging vegetarian does is a completely different, and apparently more enjoyable experience. They tell me that the most difficult part is adopting the appearance and mannerisms of the vegetarian buck in order to get close enough to the doe to bag her.

They also talk about bagging the same doe multiple times, often in the same day. Is this some sort of bizarre "catch and release" program? I've also heard that when you bag a "trophy doe" it is standard practice for the doe to come home with you and live there. It seems to me that simply mounting the doe would be sufficient, and that supporting the doe for the rest of its natural life to be overkill, but apparently this isn't the case.
