gear suggestion (shirts)View Messagesgear suggestion (shirt) “I am doing a trek on the AT this summer, and i know it can get quit cold. i was looking for some suggestion on what would be a good (on the cheap side) shirt to wear i have alot of shirts, but i didnt know if a plain cotton shirt is all that great for a trail up in the montains, and wool gets ichy. so if there and any suggestions feel free to give them to me” 9:44:47 AM 5/09/02 “If you're a large-breasted female, I'd prefer you not wear one.” 9:46:20 AM 5/09/02 “See troll See troll type Type, troll, type” 9:48:28 AM 5/09/02 “Troll, troll, troll yer boat...” 9:50:30 AM 5/09/02 “I like capilene. It has a pretty wide temperature range for comfort and is fairly cheap, especially if you can find it on sale.” 9:50:44 AM 5/09/02 “what part of the AT are you doing?” 9:53:16 AM 5/09/02 “REI has polypro stuff, too.” 9:59:01 AM 5/09/02 “I can't believe you folks are taking this cat seriously. One of the requirements for being an Eagle Scout is a high grade-point average (at least it was in my day). This dude is barely literate. Bubba, if I'm wrong about you, I apologise.” 10:08:28 AM 5/09/02 “Anything polyester is good to go. SierraTradingPost has a lot of good deals. In the warm months I like a short sleeved button up rayon shirt and in the winter a light polypro style base with a long sleeved button up fleece shirt over that and if it's colder than that a fleece vest over the whole works.” 10:12:50 AM 5/09/02 “"i didnt know if a plain cotton shirt is all that great for a trail up in the montains," A cotton shirt is not good for any trail.” 10:21:39 AM 5/09/02 “Father Goose,,,,,,isn't Ice Tea an Eagle Scout???” 10:22:43 AM 5/09/02 “Guys, I've got some seriously sad news about our public schools these days. My son has always been a straight As or As and Bs honor student and he would still be spelling like that if I hadn't started proofreading his work and making him correct the spelling. The really do accept it that way and give good grades for it.” 10:27:01 AM 5/09/02 “At my daughter's (private) school, they still have spelling as a subject. She has lists of spelling words and a test every week.” 10:31:54 AM 5/09/02 “Yeah, he did in elementary school but if you don't use it you lose it. Since they never enforce proper spelling, the kids don't learn it. In just a few weeks of having re-do them correctly his spelling improved miraculously.” 10:37:41 AM 5/09/02 gear suggestion (shirt) “i am a pretty good student and have high points or whatever you were talkin about father goose im just not a computer person and dont really like typing but this seems to be a good way to get info sorry if i offended you by my typing i was just lookin for info on shirts” 10:46:10 AM 5/09/02 “You don't offend me, young man. I just (evidently) mistook you for one of those critters under the bridge. You have my sincerest apologies. BTW, you have come to the right place to get your BP questions answered. There are a lot of knowledgeable folks here.” 10:50:25 AM 5/09/02 “Cotton Bad - Synthetic Good Look in your Scout Book or the Scout Field Book. SierraTradingPost does have the best deals. Are you Eagle Scout Yet?” 10:53:00 AM 5/09/02 “I just scored a long-sleeve coolmax alta shirt from Sierra Trading Post for $5. Check it out.” 10:55:44 AM 5/09/02 “Thanks, and yes, my paper work just came back from nationals on Monday.” 10:56:28 AM 5/09/02 “Congrats from an Eagle w/Silver Palm co '87” 11:00:50 AM 5/09/02 “Oh yeah, I like coolmax T's and nylon shirts were you can roll up the sleeves. Kinda like fishing shirts.” 11:03:14 AM 5/09/02 “thanks fellow eagle scout my project was a b***h and expensive and long but i got it done i am now a assistant scout master and a vice crew chief unfortunatly i am 18 so i couldnt get any palm which sucks but its all good. im just glad i can still go out backpacking with my venture crew so its awsome” 11:09:48 AM 5/09/02 “What did you do?” 11:16:45 AM 5/09/02 “One of the best things you could do is to go check out some AT spacific sites and pay close attention to what the thru hikers have on their gear lists. You should be able to learn all you'd need as far as gear is concerned.” 11:17:51 AM 5/09/02 11:19:38 AM 5/09/02 “i poured and put a flag pole in my school which also had a stand or my school mascot to stand on luckily i work construction so i knew how to do all that stuff just getting big enough guys in my troop to help me was the hard stuff. if you get a chance look at my troops website www.troop732.org its pretty well run” 11:20:57 AM 5/09/02 “thanks for suggestions” 11:22:01 AM 5/09/02 “Good for you. I especially liked the Mad Rabid Spider Monkey patrol. Good stuff. Mines troop623.com Gotta do a little updating this weekend on it. I built a 1.5 mile nature trail. Took 1 year and 3000 man-hours. Makes me tired just thinking about it now.” 11:27:21 AM 5/09/02 “it shows yall did a suwanne river area trip which area were you at we canoes it a few years back did about 75 miles i think” 11:34:31 AM 5/09/02 Suwannee River St park “Right were the Withalacoochee spills into the Suwannee. Very low water this year. Got a bunch of new guys so it was just a canoe skills training trip and not a trek. Great park, not crowded at all.” 12:06:31 PM 5/09/02 “if your high adventure crew wants to do a trip on it, its awsome to canoe or hike you can get to this place called suwannee springs i mean this place is awsome there is this wall that goes around the mouth and you can get up on the top and jump in and you feel great after a long day on the trail or whatever. that was our last day on that river and we were only about a mile from the end point so we decided to stay a lil bit longer than expected and had a blast also the chicks in that area that we saw were great talk about sexy damn yo i highly suggest the river trip” 12:17:19 PM 5/09/02 shirts “the best place to find a shirt is at the recycling center, or good will, cheap! get a dress shirt, usually a synthetic of some sort, best price i can find anywhere on a decent shirt, as long as you don't mind using someone's used shirt... like it matters if the only wore it once a year and you're planning on getting all sweaty and dirty anyway. i got my trail pants for a buck, my shirt for a buck... may not be the prettiest to look at, but who cares? the bears.” 1:04:12 PM 5/09/02 “So you dress for dinner?” 1:05:53 PM 5/09/02 “dress for backpacking... usually am able to find decent clothes, compare them, what's the difference between one and these $30 shirts on the rack in rei?” 1:08:48 PM 5/09/02 “I was referring to the bear reference. That was my dry sense of humor font.” 1:10:07 PM 5/09/02 “I have a variety of nylon shirts from outdoor gear makers. If I have to take just one, it is my long-sleeved nylon shirt from Rail Riders. The sleeves roll up and button there, it's thin enough to not overheat you, but blocks some of the wind. It breathes well and drys very fast. It weighs very, very little. And it shows little if any wear after a fair amount of use hiking and canoeing, with regular washings. Like zip-off convertible pants, a longsleeve shirt that can be turned into a short sleeve (roll up or otherwise) is a very versatile piece of gear. I have heavier ones, such as the Ex Officio shirt I wore on the Waterloo-Pinckney hike in March. That shirt has venting under the arms and button-up sleeves, a verticle map pocket on the chest, etc. Again, very sturdy, easy care, quick dry. Layer with fleece vest and wind/rain jacket, and you have a pretty standard outfit for most situations.” 1:11:50 PM 5/09/02 “Lots of people have answered the where and what material part of his question. I'll add that in summer you probably won't need a long sleeve. At night it might get down in the low 50's, but you'll be in a sleeping bag. In the morning it might be a little chilly, but once you get moving you'll warm right up.” 1:16:33 PM 5/09/02 They're Less Than $3 And Work Well “Go to your local Starvation Army store and get one of those 35%Cotton 65%Polyester buttondown w/coller shirts that your gandfather wore, long sleeve or short sleeve. The material is ultra thin, vents well, dries quicker than folks would think considering cotton is present, and best of all they won't break the bank. It's the kind of shirt I hike in the most and if I could find a better type of shirt, I'd wear it!” 1:23:16 PM 5/09/02 “And in my case, for all my hiking shirts, the really crucial detail is I got them all for about half-price by shopping closeouts.” 1:23:26 PM 5/09/02 “"..." bugs = long sleeves wouldn't go anywhere, winter or summer without long sleeves” 3:30:24 PM 5/09/02 “he asked a legitimate newbie question...alot of scout troops are "kickball" troops. Ya'll need to stop yelling troll when someone post or ask a gear or location question....now if it's political or stupid...then hollar away. I mean this thread and the vege recipes...that's not trollish...shesh” 4:16:25 PM 5/09/02 “thnaks bro, I dont really understand this whole troll thing. I mean im not new to backpacking, i have been doing this for around 4 or 5 years, i just never thought about getting better gear till recently because we are doing this big hike where it gets pretty elevated. So i dont undersand where these people think i am new to backpacking ive probably done every trail in florida i just want to broaden my horizin and go to a lil higher area. you knwo what i mean man.” 4:22:10 PM 5/09/02 “COTTON IS THE ENEMY!!! BUY SOMETHING SYNTHETIC!!! Seriously synthetic is easier to clean, quick to dry, great wicking propertys too. They only weigh a few ounces too. Check out the sales at Campmor.com I get them for $10.00 from there all the time...coolmax, duafold, etc.” 4:28:33 PM 5/09/02 “i was also wandering, i heard that you could wear bicycle short underneath your cloths to keep from friction on the legs. do these work” 4:33:09 PM 5/09/02 “They do work, if ya have probs. there.” 4:35:20 PM 5/09/02 “Old saying always true--cotton kills. I use dupont supplex (fancy nylon) Weighs nothing, dries instantly, put a silk undershirt under it on cold a.m.'s it wicks and keeps you warm. No problems.” 4:36:00 PM 5/09/02 “hmmmm... When I hiked in the Grand Canyon the first time twelve years ago, I WISHED I had a cotton shirt. It was 110 F in the Inner Canyon. My capilene shirt wicked all perspiration away exactly as advertised, but I REALLY could have used some evaporative cooling on that particular trip.” 4:44:08 PM 5/09/02 “Bicycle shorts as underwear – Are you kidding? I have spent hundreds of hours in cycling shorts on a bicycle. They are great for that but not when off the cycle. The padding between the legs is not good for walking. By the why, if there is no pad they are not cycling shorts. Cycling shorts are like cowboy clothing, great when you are riding, real stupid the rest of the time.” 4:45:22 PM 5/09/02 “that actually sounds good i think i will rethink that now thanks” 4:51:11 PM 5/09/02 “if you can't catch a good sale at campmor..and need a shirt right away...goto target and pick up anything 100% polyester, or nylon. Also look for addidas, nike or other athletic thin nylon jerseys Trolling is when someone uses "another" name to post off the wall stuff and not be held accountable...why you were singled out...i dunno. now if you posted something like "can my dog pack a gun in the XXX national forest"” 5:15:49 PM 5/09/02
