gear suggestion (shirts)

“I am doing a trek on the AT this summer, and i know it can get quit cold. i was looking for some suggestion on what would be a good (on the cheap side) shirt to wear i have alot of shirts, but i didnt know if a plain cotton shirt is all that great for a trail up in the montains, and wool gets ichy. so if there and any suggestions feel free to give them to me”

“I like capilene. It has a pretty wide temperature range for comfort and is fairly cheap, especially if you can find it on sale.”

In the warm months I like a short sleeved button up rayon shirt and in the winter a light polypro style base with a long sleeved button up fleece shirt over that and if it's colder than that a fleece vest over the whole works.”

“Guys, I've got some seriously sad news about our public schools these days. My son has always been a straight As or As and Bs honor student and he would still be spelling like that if I hadn't started proofreading his work and making him correct the spelling. The really do accept it that way and give good grades for it.”

“At my daughter's (private) school, they still have spelling as a subject. She has lists of spelling words and a test every week.”

“Yeah, he did in elementary school but if you don't use it you lose it. Since they never enforce proper spelling, the kids don't learn it. In just a few weeks of having re-do them correctly his spelling improved miraculously.”

“One of the best things you could do is to go check out some AT spacific sites and pay close attention to what the thru hikers have on their gear lists. You should be able to learn all you'd need as far as gear is concerned.”

“the best place to find a shirt is at the recycling center, or good will, cheap! get a dress shirt, usually a synthetic of some sort, best price i can find anywhere on a decent shirt, as long as you don't mind using someone's used shirt... like it matters if the only wore it once a year and you're planning on getting all sweaty and dirty anyway. i got my trail pants for a buck, my shirt for a buck... may not be the prettiest to look at, but who cares? the bears.”

“dress for backpacking... usually am able to find decent clothes, compare them, what's the difference between one and these $30 shirts on the rack in rei?”

“I have a variety of nylon shirts from outdoor gear makers. If I have to take just one, it is my long-sleeved nylon shirt from Rail Riders. The sleeves roll up and button there, it's thin enough to not overheat you, but blocks some of the wind. It breathes well and drys very fast. It weighs very, very little. And it shows little if any wear after a fair amount of use hiking and canoeing, with regular washings.

Like zip-off convertible pants, a longsleeve shirt that can be turned into a short sleeve (roll up or otherwise) is a very versatile piece of gear. I have heavier ones, such as the Ex Officio shirt I wore on the Waterloo-Pinckney hike in March. That shirt has venting under the arms and button-up sleeves, a verticle map pocket on the chest, etc. Again, very sturdy, easy care, quick dry.

Layer with fleece vest and wind/rain jacket, and you have a pretty standard outfit for most situations.”

“Lots of people have answered the where and what material part of his question. I'll add that in summer you probably won't need a long sleeve. At night it might get down in the low 50's, but you'll be in a sleeping bag. In the morning it might be a little chilly, but once you get moving you'll warm right up.”

“Go to your local Starvation Army store and get one of those 35%Cotton 65%Polyester buttondown w/coller shirts that your gandfather wore, long sleeve or short sleeve. The material is ultra thin, vents well, dries quicker than folks would think considering cotton is present, and best of all they won't break the bank. It's the kind of shirt I hike in the most and if I could find a better type of shirt, I'd wear it!”

“Old saying always true--cotton kills. I use dupont supplex (fancy nylon) Weighs nothing, dries instantly, put a silk undershirt under it on cold a.m.'s it wicks and keeps you warm. No problems.”

“hmmmm... When I hiked in the Grand Canyon the first time twelve years ago, I WISHED I had a cotton shirt. It was 110 F in the Inner Canyon.

My capilene shirt wicked all perspiration away exactly as advertised, but I REALLY could have used some evaporative cooling on that particular trip.”

“Bicycle shorts as underwear – Are you kidding? I have spent hundreds of hours in cycling shorts on a bicycle. They are great for that but not when off the cycle. The padding between the legs is not good for walking. By the why, if there is no pad they are not cycling shorts. Cycling shorts are like cowboy clothing, great when you are riding, real stupid the rest of the time.”

Also look for addidas, nike or other athletic thin nylon jerseys
