Georgia
Hi all! I live in georgia and I am a pretty experienced backpacker. I was in boy scouts for many years and went on many weekend trips. I also have done a 10 day trip in NC for the past 2 years. My girlfriend says she doesn't understand why "walking around in the woods all day and sleeping on the ground" could be enjoyable. I said I would show her by taking her on a day hike(to start out with) I am looking for a good place in northern GA to take her. I would like it not to be crowded so she can feel the "wilderness" feeling but we gotta be able to get in and out in a day. It can't be to strenous as she's has never done this. Does anyone know a place around here that will give my girlfriend a good first impression of backpacking. all the good places i know are in NC. Thanks for your help!

Brother, I would recommend a hike in Savage Gulf. It's not too far from Georgia. I would say do the hike from Savage Station to Hobbs Cabin and back. It's an easy weekend hike and the vistas are stunning. That's how I broke in Mother Goose, and she's not the outdoors type. Just make sure all she has to carry are her bedroll and clothes. You hump the rest.

Yeah, where in Ga. are you starting from? It sounds like you're looking for something not too hilly, but not boringly flat either... Once you get as far south as Augusta, it's Seriously Flat, <G>.

Have you ever been to Cloudland Canyon? It's up in the Northwest corner, north of Rome... quite picturesque without being strenuous. For crowd control, a weekday would be better, tho'.

If you want to toss in something more challanging, you can head down into the canyon next to the waterfalls. As you must know, it gets Pretty Steep beside your average waterfall, <G>.

Panther Creek Falls
Check out Panther Creek Falls - Look it up on www.georgiatrails.com

However Leave early before the crowds get there. The crowdedness is hit and miss - one weekend there is no one in sight, the next its crowded.

I have never been to them either, but check out raven cliff falls I heard thier incredible.

Both these are in N.E. Ga about 1-2 hours outside atlanta.

My G/F and I are newer hikers but dayhike all the time if your interested in meeting sometime. Contact me at jinx025@yahoo.com (Im in atlanta).

I'd take her to the Leonard E. Foote Hike Inn Trail in Amicalola Falls State Park in North Georgia. You can day hike to a nice backcountry Inn, stay the night in comfort, and hike out. (I've never done this, but the place is supposed to be very nice).
Here's the site:
Hike Inn

For other ideas, get a copy of the Falcon Guide ("Hiking Georgia"). You can get it from Amazon.
