Best way to pack a synth fill sleeping bag
Hello All, I'm new to the list (and fairly to backpacking too)
I heard this group could use some more estrogen ;)

I need some advice and its kind of a weird question but..... My boyfriend and I are heading out to Shenandoah for an overnight this weekend. Greg has a nice Marmot synthetic bag that is a little bulky (don;t have the cash for a down bag at the moment)What is the best way to pack it? It takes up a lot of space in the pack. He has a Kelty bag with an adjustable top, should he put it on the top, above all his other stuff. Will a compression bag squish it a lot smaller?? I have a down bag so I haven't run into the problem of where to pack it. Thanks for the advice.

Compression sack and put it in the bottom close to his back.

Welcome to TT! The more girls the better!

What nigal said, but don't squeeze it down farther than you have to. Synthetic bags lose loft easily when oversquished.

There are probably a thousand answers to this. Sounds like his pack is an external frame - if I could not stuff it into the bottom of my bag then I would stuff it into a compression sack and lash it onto the bottom of the pack for decent weight distribution (light on bottom, heavier on top.) There are downloadable packing instructions on kelty.com.

Stuffing is generally considered better for the bag. Compression sacks work, and with a synthetic bag can work wonders, but don't store it that way when you get home.

Hi Meg, I asked the same thing under a thread called compression stuff sacks and straps. There are some more answers to your question there.

MegW, don't get your bun in a knot! I was over at Bacpac's party, peering at the action from the bushes. All that action with the pigs and goats and I got carried away. Please accept my humblest apologies. (Got any pictures in stockings and hikers?)

Hi Meg! I did a list of the females on this site, and it was surprisingly long, but we can always use some more SASSY ones! Welcome to TT and happy hiking to you and Greg.

Maybe next week, HOI. Maybe she has lots of hiking sisters. If she gets them to join TrailTalk, I'll have to redo my list of ladies. We might even approach 50 % of this board someday.

You all are too funny.
I am just sitting here at work

Too bad I live so far away I would really like to meet some of you people. I'm up north in Oregon.

...and always pull out your bag as soon as possible to let it fluff up. Otherwise you will not getfull warmth. I learned that the hard way.
