Film Choices for film scannerView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 5 of 5 messages posted.
hobbit, pennsy, anybody? “Tried out my film/slide scanner this morning and I like the results. Slides are a little grainy, but better than using the slide adapter on the flatbed scanner. The one I did from a negative came out nice. Alaska Photos scanned from slides I noticed that, no surprise, I really like the color balance from the kodachrome slides I scanned. Is there a print film that is close to Kodachrome?” 11:18:38 PM 5/11/02 11:20:26 PM 5/11/02 “Pathman, those are beautiful. Making my heart ache to be out there. The El Morro sky makes me homesick. Sweet!” 11:34:58 PM 5/11/02 “I'm not aware of a color negative film that will match the saturation of Kodachrome, however the closest I've come to it is Kodak Portra 160 VC (VC stands for vivid color). It's color balance renders skin tones as natural as any I've used. If I were you, I'd stick with the transparencies. You mentioned a problem with grain, and you've a better chance of greatly reducing the amount of grain by using a slower slide film; FUJI Velvia is hard to beat for the type of photography that you appear to like. Just don't forget your tripod and cable release.... (a good idea no matter WHAT emulsion you choose) Another possibility is FUJI Provia 100F, or even 400F if you need a faster film. I really enjoyed perusing your photos. Keep up the good work, and keep on sharing.” 10:28:26 PM 5/13/02 “Thanks, Hobbit. I don't carry a tripod or cable release, although I have trekking poles that can be used as a monopod. I scanned many more over the weekend, and some are coming out pretty good. I found out that the Minolta scanner software is not very popular, and has a knack for bringing out the dust! Other Minolta scanner users recommend Vuescan, so I'm going to try the free demo this evening. It is also supposed to have better color rendition than the Minolta software.” 2:20:32 PM 5/14/02
