We had a 5.2 quake here in the Bay Area about 10:00 pm. I was watching the Sharks/Avalanche game when the announcers stated that the Compaq Center was a shakin'. I waited a couple seconds and sure enough, it came up where I live. The quake was centered near Gilroy and I live about 80 miles to the north in Walnut Creek.

This is the same way I braced myself for the '89 quake... watching the A's/Giants in the world series. Man, I dig quakes. Wish they happened more often!

We didn't have an earthquake here in Montreal...but the Canadiens got creamed 8 - 2 by the Hurricanes. What a humiliating defeat for the last game of the season...on home ice, no less.

Earthquakes and sky high rent, the only 2 things I don't miss about living in California.

I was watchin' the game too. The announcers thought that the fans were rockin' the announcers booth. Then they came on and said it was an earthquake.

GO AVALANCHE!!!!! Av's won in OT

Being a Native Son of the Golden West I can say that I much preferred the quakes to the tornadoes I now have to put up with!

Phil, I actually stayed in Costa Mesa around X-mas time in 1997. The quake was like a 4.0 and in the early morning. I stayed w/ my Dutch bf and his Dutch buddies. I woke up to hear a bunch of Dutch men cheering. They apparently loved the things. I, on the other hand, called my mom to warn her of my impending death.

4.0? Shucks, girl, that'd hardly rattle the dishes!

In my neck of the woods the earth does not generally do any rattling, so I was quite upset over the whole thing. The bed shook a little and I could see the picture frames sway. It was enough to convince that the BIG one was on it's way. The Dutch guys decided it was a good time to go get some beer. I was unimpressed.

Last night was the first one I have ever felt...and the first significant one since I moved out to SF in October of 2000.

My girlfriend and I were sitting on the couch watching the news and all of the sudden things started shaking. We both look at each other like "what have you been eating?" and then realized that it wasn't just the couch that was shaking.

It was just a little tremble, but since I live in a very "earthquake prone" part of SF, we got probably more nervous than we needed to.

Pretty funny stuff.

Newgirl, You didn't like that earthquake?
My daughter was camping out about 2 miles from the epicenter of that one. Try to imagine that.

Yee Haw!
Yeah, it shook pretty good where I live. I had enough time to think, "Hey, an earthquake - cool. Hey, this is kinda going on a while. Uh-oh, better get under a doorway." Cat didn't like it - usually doesn't care. Lots of shaking because it was shallow - only about 5 miles underground - usually they're more like 20-30. Several aftershocks, too, including one 3.2. You can go to the USGS's web site to get more info (like coords to plot using your TOPO program, if you're a map nut like me. . . .). URL is: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsUS/Quakes/nc40133364.htm

newgirl - you do have quakes up in MT, just not too often. The most famous (infamous!) was the one that killed a bunch of campers and formed Earthquake Lake in, what was it, 1959??

It was no big deal. We were watching TV, started to feel it, I said "4 point something", and we kept watching TV. Then we got a stronger shock, and I said "okay, maybe 5". Watched the news for a few minutes, but nothing about the quake--not even a crawl.

Bongofreek, are you in the Marina? That whole fill area is probably the worst--as witness the damage from the Loma Prieta.

Dammitall I missed another!!! I'm in the Fairfield/Vacaville area and didn't feel a thang. I've been here about 9 months without feeling a thang yet. My grandmother gets here for a visit last week and a few days ago she feels the 3.2 from Rio Vista just E of Travis AFB. It shook the fridge and some plates a bit. I, standing with a neib out in the street gabbing, felt zilch. I don't wanna live here without having some shakerattle'nroll! At least a tadbit.

Martyb, you are right. Quake Lake is pretty cool too. My Grandma told me that she knew when she saw my mom's crib start shaking. But, to my knowledge there hasn't been much activity since that one, which was long, long before my time.

MT & WY get ready
Saw a program on Discover channel about Mega Volcanoes. Yellowstone apparently is one. Yellowstone Lake is shifting slightly south due to magma bulging up north of the lake. The caldera has supposedly erupted every 6000 to 8000 years. It has been approximately 6000 years since it last blew. That will be a big shaker! BTW, I didn't feel last night's little shaker in the Central Valley. I have been in 2 big ones, Loma Prieta and the 1972 Sylmar quake. 5 miles from the epicenter of the latter.

I live 15 miles north of Gilroy (the quake's epicenter). It shook a little, we heard it more than felt it. I don't get too excited about the little ones after being through several in 6 range and the 7.2 Loma Prieta quake. During the Loma Prieta quake, I was on the freeway and you could actually see the road rising and falling like waves on the ocean.

Hey keema, I saw that program too, only I thought it was every 600,000 to 800,000 years. Supposedly the last one occurred about 600,000 years ago, so it could either be tomorrow, or sometime in the next 200,000 years.

I'm not too worried, but I live in Alabama....

I've been living in the Bay Area and Sac area for over 20 years and have never felt one including the one in '89. So, naked ape, don't hold your breath. As far as the chances of feeling one in Vacaville, I work in Vacaville and when they built the plant, Earthquakes were a major consideration, I believe the ground is pretty stable otherwise they would've built elsewhere.

yep, I am in the Marina...i guess living on landfill is what I get for being yuppie scum.

The earthquake has been the major point of discussion at work today...colleagues from SF and the penninsula all felt it, the ones on the coast (Half Moon Bay) didn't feel a thing.

Opie, what ya talkin' about, the sharks have been a playoff team since '94 with the exception of 96-97. This is the 4th year they've gotten into the 2nd round. In '94 they knocked off the Wings in the 1st round as an 8 seed. For a relatively new team they have a decent playoff history.

You all want to feel earthquakes, come to northern NJ. I've felt two in fifteen years. They don't seem to cause any damage that I know of, though. Not like some of the California ones in the last fifteen years.

I can't believe Selanee slashed Forsberg's wrist...it could've been a career ending injury. Everybody plays a little dirty during the playoffs...but I didn't expect a good player to do that sort of thing.
