The USGS has a cool feature where you answer a bunch of questions, and your answers are fed into a database that instantly prepares a shaking intensity map. Pretty cool. Go here to check it out for this 'quake.

BTW, it's been upgraded to a 6.0!

I ckecked on that link you posted, Bowlderm, and found one north of Missoula that occured last Sunday. It was only a puny 3.8--didn't feel a thing.

That's the way it is in Montana. Either it's some puny little wussy earthquake or the whole side of a mountain comes down.

Glad to hear you made it through the latest BowlderMan...not exactly Loma Linda this time, but probably nerve wracking none the less.

I need to call my brother in SF to see if he felt it.

Apparently there was a little one (2.9) up in Massena, NY on Sept. 3. Just the Adirondack growing again.

Bongo, my wife works in SF on the 11th floor of a building, and she didn't feel a thing....

That's right, WW! I remember now. My dad grew up in Visalia - he has stories of fighting with the kids from Porterville (and all the other towns around there, too, for that matter....).

Apparently, this quake has the scientists drooling because, according to the newspaper, it's the most heavily instrumented area in the country.

BowlderMan, where do you live? Are we neighbors? We're up in Sonoma County.

TwinkleToes, I grew up in Missouri. Not to many people know about THAT earthquake. There's a really interesting book--The Frontiersman--that has that earthquake in it as a central point.

Right after I heard the news, I called our son who at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. He didn't feel a thing. Dang kids, as Naviguesser would say.

"That's what you get when you move to a different continent, bongo: no more fun ground shaking!"
Does that mean Marin is a different continent?

Hey now, Basel is in an earthquake zone...they had a big one in the 1600s...you know the Swiss, they all have earthquake insurance, just in case...

the problem is the earthquakes, its the cloudy weather...I am permenantly in SF-like fog and overcast so far this fall...
bongofreek
10:24:57 AM
9/30/04

ah, so that's why
When I went to Switzerland in September one year I couldn't see the beautiful mountains due to the darn fog. What a disappointment.

Mount St Helens is not going to erupt by the way. She's just letting off some steam. As I said before, the worse that could happen is for that glacier in the crater to melt and cause flooding and mud in the rivers, potentially causing trouble down in the cities. Besides Mt St Helens is sort of south and not near any major cities. Mid/South Western WA is pretty uninhabited.
Oops, I shouldn't have said anything, now everyone is gonna move there.

From Reuters
"Seismologists said there was no connection between activity at Mount St. Helens and a strong earthquake near Parkfield, California or a smaller series of quakes in Alaska earlier this week."

And I was thinking the whole Pacific Rim was going to crack off into the sea. Darn!

(You guys like my new macabre self? Boo ha ha haaaaa!)
