“4.5 'quake about 50 miles north 5 minutes ago - we felt it!!!”

“We felt it here in Sonoma Coounty. I was still at work in Santa Rosa. The building - a very old one - shook and roared. After the initial run to stand in the door jamb, I gathered up my work and lap top and headed home.”

“Forgot to mention that I guessed the magnitude of 5.6 exactly! When I went to the "recent earthquakes" page of the USGS, it showed the location, but not the magnitude. I thought, hmmmmm, I'm going to guess a 5.5, no a 5.6. Sure enough, I was right! I almost always am within .1 or .2 - somebody should pay me to do that instead of spending all that money on fancy machines!


Also, news reports this morning pointed out that this one was the biggest since the Loma Prieta 'quake in '89.

“I just got home, was staying at the Internatrional Hotel on Nob Hill last night, sitting on the bed when all of a sudden it started muving back & forth on me! :) WHOOOOAAAA! Being high up in a hotel on top of nob hill in San Franciso when a quake hits is NOT something I ever want to do again!

Fortunately, the bar at Top of the Mark was open! :)”

“I (in Livermore) was on the phone with my husband (in Santa Clara only a few miles from the center) when he started cursing. I was so busy trying to figure out if he burnt his dinner or not that I didn't notice the kitchen light swaying back and forth. Finally, just about when the noise of all the glass rattling got through to me, he told me there was a quake, and a big one. I was too preoccupied on the phone to notice the shaking....I am really glad. Those things scare the p**p right outta my me. And then that guy had to go sit in front of the Bart train. The Bay area was JUMPIN last night.”

“BowlderSon was at his piano lesson, which is in one of the oldest homes in Alameda. I worried about him for a sec, but then remembered that that house survived the '06 and '89 quakes, so he was probably better off than we were!”

The quake just before 4:37 a.m. was centered 6 miles from West Salem, Ill., and 66 miles from Evansville, Ind.

“I slept thru the 4am one but was sitting at my desk when the 4.6 hit a couple hours ago.

I was looking out the window when it hit and I could see everything moving back and forth relative to my window.

It was cool.”

“Sticks is right. I'm nearly 50 years old and this was the first time I had felt a quake and knew what it was at the time. It is very rare to feel one in Central Illinois.

Should New Madrid again show the fury of 1812, Memphis will be devastated and St Louis will be in trouble as well.”
