Seriously! I heard of a diet where you are supposed to eat a protein and a carb 6 times a day. That seems like a lot of protein. Oh yeah, you also have to work out 6 times a week.

That has adventure written all over it!

biz...yes, if you stay on it too long. The high-protein, no carb diet can be dangerous, so be careful.

My brother has used it successfully to take a few pounds off, but he never stays on it for more than a month, I think.

Protein AND carb? I've heard of the strict protein diet but that's a new one. You really should check with your physician before starting something like that.

Correction, this is a high protein high carb diet. You have to work out all the time.

That's a new one on me. If it's the new fad diet, I'd stay away from it.

The best way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more. Instead of going on temporary "diets", change your everyday eating habits to include less fat (not none) and try to get some exercise every day. You may not lose weight as quickly this way, but you will add lean body mass, and increase your body's ability to burn calories, even at rest, and increase your chances of keeping the weight off.

What I said before about your doctor. Working out's good for you, especially as a backpacker.
So stop whining and hit the gym, girl!

I knew a guy on our college dorm floor who got into bodybuilding and had cases of tuna stacked in his closet. He'd hord hard-boiled eggs from the food service and drank some kind of powdered stuff he mixed up-- definitely on the high protein regimen. He'd eat about 6 times a day, worked out a lot and packed on about 50 lbs of muscle over the school year. That spring he went home and entered the Mr. Idaho contest and won "Best Legs".

Are you going to change your name to "buf"?

how are you planning to get the protein? animal-based protein especially is bad for your heart, and an excessive amount of protein leaches calcium from your body. sounds like a get-muscles-quick scheme...

Father Goose sounds like that AFLAC commercial.

See your %$@#& doctor!

Seems like a high protein and high carbo diet is sorta the same as a low fat diet. Just eat food that is as unprocessed as possible, and get your carbs from whole food and grains. Some doctors think that you should eat meat and veggies together, or starches and veggies together, but not meat and starch together, for better digestion. I don't know, myself, but it doesn't hurt to try it. All that exercise will be easier if your digestion is calm.

I try to stick to pretty high protein eatin' myself Biz. I usually include alot of beans in my meals, not that I'm a veggie, it's just an easy way to pack in more protien. I mean steak for every meal would be great and all, but . . . .

Biz, I'm not a MD but I work at a hospital and hear a lot of things about the high protein diet. In moderation it seems to be effective in reducing weight. BUT, for some people it can bring out heart conditions that they don't know they have - which is dangerous. Also, when your body is digesting your fats for energy it is not a pleasant feeling.

Kind of like running a marathon and running out of sugar in your body - your body starts digesting your fat to get energy and it's a yucky feeling - makes me want to puke.

The best diet is exercise so everyone get out there and get jiggy with it !!

Remember:

The Inuit people of the Arctic had a 100% meat diet with virtually no heart disease or cancer until until the white man introduced them to grains, fruits, and vegetables.

welcome to my world! I wouldn't call me a bodybuilder cuz' I don't wanna be freaky big but I do eat 5-6 times a day (2 of those are usually protein shakes). I eat complex carbs (REAL oatmeal, whole grain this and that, brown rice) Lots of chicken, tuna, lean beef. Veggies... mostly cruciferous (cauliflower, broccoli, spinach). I watch the glycemic index of other fruits veggies, and eat the high glycemic ones before 2-3pm. My muscle growth has been AMAZING, I work out 3 days a week splitting each workout into 2 bodyparts, with each bodypart getting worked out just once a week(rest is good!). I drink about a gallon of water a day. I'm 5'8 about 190lbs between 10%-15% bodyfat right now... starting some cardio, wanna have a swimmers body for this summer. I think your plan is good if you want some muscularity... Lots of the fitness women do what you are contemplating

Gordon, your statement could be a little misleading because I would guess the Inuit meat diet was in fact a large % of fish. Fish and fish oil are good for your heart if I'm not mistaken

Sounds like 'Body for Life.' Six meals with equal servings of carbs/protein and a strict workout regimen. I know some people who have had great results doing that. It works if you follow the program. I tried it for a while and noticed changes after a couple weeks but it was hard for me to do because of my work schedule.

That's pretty low Newgirl... either you've got more muscle than you know or you are chronically malnourished. Eat something would ya?? (LOL)

Lyra, soy protein has actually been shown to lower testosterone levels in males... but that's just one study, who can tell. A well diversified diet is still probably the best thing you can do for health

oh yeah, fat doesn't necessarily make you fat... it's high calorie, but healthy (unsaturated) is good for you... Avocados rule!

Donman, I assure you that I am not malnourished or unhealthy in anyway. I just saw my doctor. Also, I'm sure if you saw me eat you would wonder what's wrong w/ me. I love food! I'm just a skinny-mini. I've really fretted over it for the last couple yrs., but after some testing and some visits w/ the doc., they said I am fine, just happen to have a great metabolism. My dr. even told me I should, "show 'er off, you're lucky to have it." Now, if I could just get those muscles!!! What kind of weight training do you do?

I'm so happy you asked!

Muscles by Donman!

I do 3 lifting days a week (until recently that's all the working out I do... I've added some cardio for summer)

Day1 (usually Saturday)- Chest/Tris
Flat bench press 4-5 sets 6-12 reps
incline flyes - 3 sets 10 reps
cable crossover - 3 sets 10 reps

Dips 3 sets
triceps extension - 3 sets 10 reps
pressdowns - 3 sets

Day2 (usually tues)
Legs/Shoulders
Squats - 4 sets
leg extensions 2 sets 10reps
leg curls 2 sets 10reps
leg press - 3 sets 6-10 reps
donkey calf - 3sets 6-10reps
seated calf - 3sets 10+ reps
(I've started to do same calf workout on Satudays after chest/tri)

Day3 (usually thurs.)
Back/Biceps
Deadlifts 4sets reps 6-10
chinups/pulldowns 3sets
bentover rows 3sets 10reps
cable rows 3sets 10reps

standing bb curl 4sets 6-10
rev curls 3sets 10reps
db preacher curls 2sets 10reps

because everything gets direct work only once a week your muscles get a lot of rest and I've made the best gains of my life... although I'm 35lbs heavier than I was maybe a year ago I wear the same sizes and am always getting commented on about my physique.

I most need to work my arms. I would love the shapely legs as well, but I have retarded buggy whip arms. Sounds like a great workout, maybe you should design one for me. That can be done at home. I can't afford the gym anymore.

Lyra, Newergirl and I drink Soy as well. Although, I usually cook or bake w/ Whole milk. We have also tried Almond milk cheese. Not so great on it's own, but good in foods.

Biz, Don't go on a high protein diet. Go low carb. Remove all the starchy foods from your diet. Also, if you don't own a bike, buy one. It's a great workout and you'll have the best looking legs in town.

High animal protein diets can cause kidney damage.

Do buy into the Dr Atkins low carb deal. That diet is great for folks with specific blood sugar issues but for average folks its inadequate. Virtually all nutritionists recommend a diet high in complex carbs. They contain the sugars necessary to produce and store glycogen, your bodies long term fuel. I have read that 60% carbs 20% protein and 10% fat is the right mix.

Most importantly avoid any fad that promises quick results. Your body isnt meant to drop pounds ina hurry, 1-2lbs a month is ideal.Lose weght and gain muscle the old fashioned way, eat well and excercise often.
