I've been using a free program called "Pop Up Stopper" and haven't seen any popups for quite awhile. I think someone from this list turned me on to it. Works like a charm.

Steve, you posted the link for the Pop Up Starter. I've been using it and it seems to work.

Do a search on "Pop Up Ads"

I have Pop Up Stopper and it does block pop ups, but not the ads on the right hand side of the screen.

Anybody know how to squash the flash ads? Banner ads I can ignore, popups I can close, but those flash ads are bamboo under my fingernails!

I've encounter something new at some web sites. An add drops down within the web page, blocking most of the page, then you have to click cancel to make it go away. Real annoying.

not to be a mean capitalist pig, but why do you want to block the REI ads? They are very tame compared with other ads on the Internet, and they actually pertain to the content of this site. I am curious why they annoy you.

Besides, it ain't bad having an easy REI link when I'm thinking backpacking.

I agree ped, I love the way matt does the ads for TT. Very unobtrusive, very topical, and all of them feeding my addiction nicely. I do often wonder if the others know that they are shooting themselves in the foot with their intrusive, invasive advertising/sales tactics.

If you visit REI's page to purchase something, get there by clicking an ad on thebackpacker. It helps support Matt, not too much to ax for all the work he does.
