National Ride a Bike to Work Day

“I usually bike to work a couple times a week. Today? No.”

“Kinda difficult. My office is across the hall from my bedroom. Bike is in the bikeroom 3 flights down. (No elevator.)”

“Yes! Got lots of "Bike to Work Day" goodies from "energizer station" set up by local bike advocacy group. I try to ride about once a week during good weather months. Today was second time this week. One way distance about 5-6 miles. Beautiful day for it here in the SF Bay Area today. . . .”

“My trip is 15 miles one way, but on crappy roads with no bike lane or shoulder, and lots of traffic. Also a 600 foot elevation change. So I only ride occasionally.”

“Ironic as it seems, I didn't ride my bike today. I usually do but today I had to go to the dentist in Sacramento so I had to drive. Not that biking is much of an effort - about 2 miles, pretty much flat, half on a greenbelt and half on a road with a wide bike lane. Even gordon might appreciate *that* part of being in Davis.”

“my town just built a bike path that runs by my work..about halfway home....i may try it one day..but i work in a suit..and am usually late driving 90 in an SUV...so *shrugs*”

“I participated in a 65 mile bike tour of Yellowstone last October. I didn't feel particular body parts for two days. 70 miles isn't a commute, it's misery on two wheels. :-)”

My son and I hope to backpack the Emigrant Wilderness Loop (Backpacker, June 2001 )in Sept 2003. Have you been in that area? Also doing Joshua Tree this October. We were there last November and loved it.”

“Hey Geezr, The Emigrant is my turf, so to speak - it's the closest Sierra destination to me, so that's where I usually go. Great area - trails well maintained; not too many people (most in this area go to Yosemite it seems); GREAT scenery; and fun and easy cross country hiking. Whaddya want to know??

Also, saw from your profile that you live in Billings - my parents live there, and I'm coming up to do the Montanapalooza route (E. Rosebud) in August.”

Not familiar with Montanapalooza, but most of my spare time is spent hiking in the Beartooth Range, including the East Rosebud. You'll love the country. Are your parents here in Billings, or did you mean Montana?”

I sent the last post to the wrong person, sorry. This is all new to me. Anyway, are your folks here in Billings? What is Montanapalooza?”

“Montanapalooza is a hike that a bunch of folks from "here" (the message board) are doing from Cooke City down to Alpine along East Rosebud Creek. Just click on the "montanapalooza 2002" thread to track their planning progress (and other fun stuff). I've been following it to get info for our own hike.

Yeah, my parents are in Billings, in the Heights area. Wait a minute, your handle is "Geezr"; my dad is a geezer; Are you my dad??!!”

“If i am I'm denying any wrongdoing from my past. ;-) We're in the Heights as well. Both my wife and myself work @ Deaconess. I did that trip a year ago. 26 miles. Great country. Are you familiar with it? In the trail guide they call it the "Beaten Path" because of it's popularity. Despite the number of hikers it's still a GREAT trip.”

Some of us are doing a 5 day trip (including me) mid July in MT. Check the "Montanapalooza" thread. Maybe you can join us? I haven't met anyone on this trip yet, but I know it'll be FUN!”

As it stands right now I'll be leaving for the Bridger-Teton National Forest to help the CDTA construct a bridge over Pacific Creek along the CDT. I leave July 27 and return Aug 9. Doubt if I can get enough time off to do your trip. If for some reason my trip falls through, I'd love to come along.”

“Hey Geezr, I'm generally familiar with the area, but haven't been on that specific trail. We've talked about doing something similar for a long time - looks like the pieces are falling into place to finally do it this year. I've heard the "beaten path" characterization. It's all relative, I think. I've found that what Montanans think of as "crowded" is likely to be different than what Californians (or Coloradans, Alaskans, etc.) think. I think our hike is going to start on a Sunday, so we'll get fewer weekend hikers, too. Can't wait to get up there and hit the trail.”
