Chips, I keep asking about hiking in a skirt too. But then again . . . I'm a girl. I guess guys have alotta' sweat issues in this area of the body, so maybe a kilt is the answer for 'yaz. I'll try a skirt out on the Montanapalooza and let you know. But then again . . . I don't really have major crotch sweat issues. My opinion may not be important.

I just read this thread and I couldn't breathe, I was laughing so hard.

Chips, if you are 6' 3" and 260 lbs, I doubt if anyone is going to laugh at your kilt or call you a chippy to your face.

Just be careful not to catch your skirt in your waistband when you stop for a potty break.

Actually, this reminds me of a folk tune (surprise)...

The queen she came to Call on us
She wanted to see All of us
I'm glad she didn't Fall on us
She's eighteen stone!

(
a 'stone' being equal to 14 pounds, this comes to 252 pounds

Not in Jersey:
Skirts land Deptford boys in detention

Tuesday, February 04, 2003

By Jeanette Tallantjtallant@sjnewsco.com Gloucester Co Times

DEPTFORD TWP. -- For the administration at Deptford High School, boys in skirts are just too much of a distraction.

But when Jim Hamer and his buddies got dressed for school Monday morning, donning plaid skirts for the fun of it, they had no idea their unconventional attire would land them in detention.

"I totally disagree with it," said Hamer, a senior who was forced to change his plaid skirt and face punishment. "At first it was just for fun, but now there's a discrimination."

The boys have been exercising their creativity all year by establishing unique holidays that add a little excitement to their school days. A few weeks ago, the group celebrated Spoon Day, passing out plastic spoons to classmates. This Friday, they plan to observe Anti-Winter Day and wear shorts and other spring-like clothing.

"We like creating the holidays to eliminate some of the blandness from the school day," said Chris Taydus, who didn't actually wear a plaid skirt Monday because he doesn't own one. "It creates a little bit of fun."

One by one Monday, the boys in skirts were sent to the vice principal's office, where they were told to change out of their plaid garb and that they would face administrative detentions for violating the township school district's dress code.

"The guidelines say that school attire (should) preserve the learning climate to acceptable standards of dress and basically, young men wearing skirts to school was a distraction," said Principal Joseph Canataro. "In the scheme of things, it's harmless, but, nonetheless, it was a violation of policy."

The group contends their skirts were of proper length and caused no distraction in their classrooms until word that detentions were being handed out started swirling.

"I walked into first period, everyone laughed then we just got down to work," said junior Josh Taylor. "No one made a big deal about it. My biggest thing is that it's not a big deal, it's just a skirt."

The boys feel they are being discriminated against because the girls who wore plaid skirts Monday faced no consequences.

"We believe that it's also a violation and discrimination based on gender," said Hamer. "Girls can wear pants and skirts. Equality of the sexes should work both ways."

Canataro said the dress code allows for a students' rights relating to dress and self-expression to be protected to a certain extent. The boys' plaid skirt stunt didn't qualify.

"We have a written policy you have to follow. We can't decided to follow it one day for one student and not another," he said.

"We respect a student's right regarding fashion and customs but we did not think their one day decision to wear a plaid skirt was a custom or style or fashion."

It's like what I overheard a father telling his son this morning as dad was trying to explain the "One Way" sign. Dad says,"That means cars can only to that way on the street." Kid, "Why?" Dad "It's the law."

if you're interested in the result...
I'm the very same chips76 who started this post last spring. I had asked ya'll 'bout whether you'd consider wearing mountain hardware's hiking kilt. I did eventually purchase the kilt, and wore it during the summer while I was on the AT for a couple weeks. It was absolutely marvelous!!!! The air circulation was heavenly, and I received zero (no) heat rashes on my thighs, a problem that had tortured me during previous long-distance hikes. I really recommend this product to anyone who has the same problem.

I'll see y'all this weekend at Red River Gorge. Unfortunatly, I won't be modeling the kilt for you...its too damn cold to keep my twigs and berries exposed.

It might surprise you, it did me, but I received no negative comments 'bout what really did look a short skirt. In fact, I heard stories of other thru-hikers wearing sarongs. Several people I met actually were thinking of ordering one themselves. Thru-hikers tend to be pretty open-minded 'bout stuff like that. Their mentality is "I'll do whatever it takes to keep going." As for the weekend warriors, well, I think they were afeard.

Probably the 17 miles, but we will see. We can shave a few off of this if need be to be more in the neighborhood of 14-15.

We will pretty much all be camped together, although if the YES count continues to grow, we will need all the backcountry sites they have.

Hey, hyway! How was your hike? Did you make it back to Springer? Looked for ya, didn't see you along the trail anywhere. ;)

it was great to be in the woods, but I had newish boots and picked up 3 blisters on my heels. That was painful. The people we were meeting up with didn't show till friday afternoon so we got a late start. Only made it as far as woody gap saturday night. Thru hikers are crazy. Couple dudes left the trail midway and showed back up at woody gap with a couple cases of beer :).

Anyhoo, we had a 9 hour drive back home from springer, so sunday morning my hiking buddy and I hitched back to Springer. Only saw 2 cars going our way but thats all it took :). easy hitching along the AT.

We saw a thruhiker suffering heat stroke on the mountain between cooper gap and justice creek. I hope he is ok. I can't find any news on him.
