Looking for a child. A Julia Child
I think I got a deal on some textured vegetable protein (TVP).

I haven't actually cooked anything with it, but it cost next to nothing and is heathier than meat protein. Has anybody cooked with this stuff? I know the Titanium Chef winner used it so I may as well give it a shot.

Hints? Suggestions? Recipes?

I use it all the time. The mail order catalog is a good source of TVP and other vegan products. They have granules, chunks and other forms of it. They have some excellent cookbooks and also sell the TVP cookbook and another good one called the Almost No-fat Cookbook which has some really good recipes for TVP and other healthy recipes. If you really want to know about cooking with TVP this is the place to help you get started.

?????
What is it? A catalog or a website? I've bought TVP at the health store, and I've seen it at the asian grocery, but where is the information that you are talking about, Rich?

Go to www.healthy-eating.com Sorry, I don't know how to do the link thing. I'll have to go read the how to make a link thread again.

Okay, so that is a good place to get soy milk powder, too. The stores near me don't have it.

Good for backpacking: I have used the TVP in a mixture of millet, corn polenta grits and orzo pasta with a cup of water. I also put olive oil, sage, garlic, onion, salt and pepper in it. In camp, you simmer it in water for 10 minutes, and then let it sit covered for 5 minutes, then eat. Clean up is pretty easy. Old Bay seasoning and couscous added to the mix are good also, as are dehydrated veggies that you soaked during your last two hours of the hike.

Their organic soymilk powder is excellent. A good product for backpacking if you don't want to drink cows milk powder.

There are about a zillion choices of TVP on that site. Which one do you order, Rich?

You guys are sick. Vegan on the trail? Soy? Textured vegetable crap? Give me Ramen noodles, a summer sausage, and a big ol' bag of combos (pizza flavored). Oh yeah, the cigarettes too. Can't forget the butts.

Unflavored granules and chunks, although next time I'd like to try the 2"X3" pieces to use in a marinade. I avoided the flavored TVP. While it may be more convenient for backpacking, I'd rather control the flavors and ingredients that the TVP is marinaded in.

Chip, I really hope that you aren't eating those summer sausage that everyone gets at Christmas from their Aunt Matilda? That stuff is nasty!

richb, here's a quick lesson.

To make a link appear in one of these messages, type the following:

<a href="your link here">the text you want to embed the link into</a>

That's the HTML code for an embedded link. It's important to always begin the link URL with "http://" If you don't, you'll get a link, but it will be prepended with the Matt's URL.

Hope that works, and hope it helps.

I put miso bean paste in the freezer and just discovered that it doesn't freeze. This means I can use a spoonful at a time, and as long as I seal it, it will keep for a long time.

Another example
Let's make it really clear with the real text for a link.

<a href="http://www.thebackpacker.com/trailtalk/">Trail Talk</a>

That text will form a link to Trail Talk, like this:

i can think of better things to eat than tvp, on trail it's nice for the protien i guess it helps my body, but it tastes like dirt

Simer, you are not supposed to marinate it in dirt.

TVP is tasteless, and takes on the flavor of whatever spices you cook with it.

Bitpusher, I don't get it. I did a search on haggis, and it is either a lopsided three legged Scottish bird, or it is a sheep sausage banned from the US because of Madcow disease. So either way, you are spared, but I'm not sure why you didn't just request a quiche.
