Now that's a trout!View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 18 of 18 messages posted.
“Hey, a fellow recently caught a 32 1/2 lb trout in the Round Valley Reservoir, in NJ. This apparently broke the record in NJ. The picture in the paper shows a huge fish. Round Valley is a neat state park near me, but the tent sites are out in the open with no tree protection. It is great for boating and picnics, though. Apparently, it is also a great place for trout to grow big.” 8:34:04 AM 5/18/02 “That's a great catch. Did it say if it was a rainbow trout or a brown trout? Or what did he catch it on? Bait, lure or fly?” 8:55:30 AM 5/18/02 “I think I'd have used dynamite on something that big.....” 9:09:13 AM 5/18/02 “Wow, that's a big one! I stop for a lunch a few days a week at the boat launch area. Round Valley is a very deep reservoir so I can see why fish get so big. BTW, a guy I work with holds the lake trout record for New York state at 39 lbs. I can't tell how many times I've had to hear that story.” 9:19:34 AM 5/18/02 “The biggest trout I ever caught in a stream was a 20 inch wild brown on fly I made myself. That seems like a minnow compared to these fish.” 9:32:01 AM 5/18/02 “Man, I've caught salmon that weren't that big!” 10:00:28 AM 5/18/02 “Okay, this is a lake trout he caught, also called a Mackinaw trout. It was caught trolling a #44 chrome Sutton spoon on 17-pound test line in 51 feet of water. (This is what the paper said). I have no idea what that meant. The previous NJ record was 26 lbs.” 10:03:10 AM 5/18/02 “Wow, this is bizarre. The reservoir is stocked each year with brook, brown, and rainbow trout. The lake trout get so big because they are eating the smaller stocking fish.” 10:07:57 AM 5/18/02 “I wonder if it's safe to swim there if the fish get so big.” 10:18:59 AM 5/18/02 “Beeeeeellllllccccchhhh!!! Oh, excuse me... signed, Mack(inaw)” 10:21:08 AM 5/18/02 “Swimming is probably safe, since these don't look like LARGE MOUTH trout.” 10:24:50 AM 5/18/02 “Trolling, you say? <G> I wonder if this is related in any way to that Giant Cat photo people keep sending me.” 10:52:15 AM 5/18/02 “That's not a trout, that's a horse! Did he saddle it up and try to ride it after he roped it?” 11:43:03 AM 5/18/02 “This reminds me of the time my husband and his family went fishing near Vancouver Island, Canada, and shipped home some salmon in dry ice. We put one really big salmon in an upright freezer. At some point, my Dad was visiting us, and we decided we wanted to cook some of that salmon. So we took it out of the freezer and tried to cut it. After trying the kitchen knives with no success, my husband goes to the garage and comes back with a sawsall, which is the size of a chainsaw, only it is for construction. Anyway, we put the fish on the kitchen table, my husband puts his arm on the fish and prepares to saw steaks off it. The four foot long salmon exploded out from under his arm, flew across the dining room, and slid under the table. We were dying laughing. Eventually we got our grilled salmon steaks, but my Dad still teases us about our circus salmon.” 2:03:56 PM 5/18/02 “Note to self: when dining at LyndyS's, bring protective gear.” 2:12:00 PM 5/18/02 “I can't imagine taking an hour to land a trout! I grew up just a few miles from there. I think the tent sites out in the open that you are thinking of are at Spruce Run, LyndyS. The sites at Round Valley are for 'backpackers' only and are in the woods. It is a several mile hike to them but there are outhouses with running water available. You can also boat over to them. The sites are not that comfortable though because they are gravel covered. They are good for those making a transition from dayhiking or *gasp* car camping.” 9:07:33 AM 5/20/02 well i thought it was a rooooock “but it was a roooooooock loooooobstah... we got a lil thang here in arkansas called the white river....the world record brown twout came from there(40 kagillion lbs). they get so big because of the sculpins & the chum of small bait fish coming out of the dam” 9:19:20 AM 5/20/02 “Okay, Violin, thanks, I guess I did get them mixed up. Spruce Run is fairly close to Round Valley. I have had picnics at Round Valley, and there were lots of wide open areas, so I got confused.” 11:04:04 AM 5/20/02
