How good is it?
My wife is interested in using this stuff, but I have no experience with it. Have any of the women here used it?

I know someone said in Spirit's thread that it works, but I'd like to hear any comments that you have. Thanks!

Yeah, I tried it on a couple of cold weather trips when I knew I'd be out for over a week, and it worked pretty well.

Keep in mind my hair isn't nearly as long as it used to be...

Its a very good stuff if you are going on long trips.

But if you have long hair like me the shampoo does not work worth a #&%!$.

The other soap I like to use is the pine soap but you have to rinse that.

It left a residue that seemed to attract more dirt. I never felt clean using that stuff.

I bought a small bottle once, and tried it at home to test it out. It stunk, and I got rid of it. I just use a few drops of campsuds. My hair is waist length, and in the Sierras it dries pretty quick.

Thanks, everyone. I think the the general opinion is to skip it and go with real shampoo.

try this
There is a product that is good for warmer weather trips, it's a "stone" made out of baking soda and some other stuff. You just get yourself wet and rub the stone all over your body. The baking soda kills odors and bacteria; hence, no smells. I've never used it, but I've heard it works well and leaves you feeling clean.

Use camp suds or Doctor Bronners or something biodegradable. We used Camp Suds for washing hair and bathing. Don't use real shampoo in the backcountry. Plus its another container you have to carry.

In warm weather, I wash without soap every chance I get (usually 3 - 5 times a day)... it cools me off and keeps odors from building up. I usually rinse my shirt as well, the wet shirt cools as it dries. Then I use something all-purpose like Dr. Bonners every few days... or use the shower in a hostel.

years ago--don't know if they still sell it--there used to be some kind of powder you put in your hair and then brushed out. I seem to remember it was OK for one day but the next day you really needed a wash.

Don't use Dr. Bronners-it leaves a sticky residue that just feels nasty and attracts more dirt, particularly on long hair. Campsuds is the best, 'cause you only need a couple of drops.

It's the rule of first advice, Phaedrus. Nobody believes the first advice until they hear it repeated many, many times.

What I usually do is listen to people until I figure out what they want to hear --- then repeat it to them. Then I'm a friggin' hero, <G>.

Ok, I have not used Dr Bronners, but a woman I backpack does. She loves it. I bought it for a car camp when I left my campsuds at home, but ended up not using it. I guess I won't be using it. I wondered if the scent would attract bears. It was in the Bearikade in the truck while I was hiking. Campsuds are the best.

I really like the castille soap. The first time I used it I was really concerned about the peppermint attracting bugs and bears. It evaporated off not long after I was completely dry though and wasn't a problem. I didn't have any problem with residue but I rinsed copiously. It really did a good job on my hair.

Dr.bronners has worked for me for 40 years.I use nothing else- home or hike. One must use the castille soap sparingly,it doesn't create a lot of suds like most, less natural soaps.Give bears a break, peppermint is no more apparent than the natural human smell-they're going to know you're there.

Hey, I could use of that paycheck they get, or that gold-plated health plan... but the damage it would do to my sterling reputation...

It'd be a tough call, LOL

I always liked that line: "This advice is worth Exactly what you paid for it."

(does this mean i've been hiking with stinky hair?)

I usually preface my own advice with exactly that line, Tilt.

As far as Congress goes, I turn to the expert:

Where are you guys bping?
Everywhere I have ever bped, soap is a no no...

"Water

Waste water from cooking - Use hot water and elbow grease, not soap. Strain-out an pack-out food particles, and disperse water over a large area.

Waste water from washing - Avoid contaminating water supplies. If you feel soap necessary, lather up and rinse at least 200 feet from any water source."
