.'We hiked 1 mile in and 1 mile out. she had to stop once each way because the weight was all on her shoulders. She was miserable ...'

.'I don't want her first backpacking experience to be a horrible one.'
Saltlick

There's a DANGER sign showing here.- I have seen too many people get sick and/or unhappy from overextending themselves when first starting. So:

Keep her first trip short. No more than one mile per day. It takes time to get accustomed to carrying a backpack.

Everyone has their own capability and adjustability. Let her decide when she is ready to extend herself further. For example, I usually start a trip with some short, easy hikes. Then I do a few short, easy, single overnights w/o food, etc. Then I extend myself a little further. It takes me about two months to reach the point where I am reasonably comfortable doing an eight mile day on the AT in GSMNP.

Two things are important. She needs to get comfortable with the backpack. Then she needs to develope her endurance with the pack and with the hiking(backpacking).

So, if you really mean this, 'I don't want her first backpacking experience to be a horrible one.', then let her go at her pace and forget 'our big hike on memorial day weekend.'

Biz: 2472 would be for really solid days backpacking... 1561 might be for a regular work day.

When I do 13 mile days with big ups and downs, I lose almost 1/2 pound a day at 2500 calories.

pedxing - Someday I'll have my aarticle
finished. Then you will be able to see how your numbers agree with mine. For example, 5,000 calories per day expended hiking minus 700 calories per day of food consumed per day equates to 1.2 pounds of weight lost per day. I've done it for months. Of course, there are some slight refinements as the body weight drops. Also, I'll show my food list for 19 days (700 calories per day).

Nowslimmer: Nice confirmation that we are pretty much on the same page. Did you mean 1.2 pounds lost per week? (actually I'd calculate 1.2 pounds per 6 days... if you are 700 calories under).

Of course, using formulas never works exactly: because every person's metabolism is a little different... and every body's hike is different.

5,000 expended minus 700 eaten equates to 1.2 pounds lost each day! (-4,300 calories per day equates to 1.2 pounds per day)

pedxing - You're correct. Metabolism, current weight level, energy expended, etc. are all factors. So, a lot of my discussion will be on averages.

There are alway those dam "civilians," who can eat and eat and never gain weight. My article will touch on quite a bit of things in weight loss, control and maintenance, as well as animal and people experiences, etc. in GSMNP. It even has an inventory of everything that I carried on a 19 day hike. All, but a few first aid items were used. But, I need to complete my fall trip first.

Already made the correction...
From Nowslimmer: So, if you really mean this, 'I don't want her first backpacking experience to be a horrible one.', then let her go at her pace and forget 'our big hike on memorial day weekend.'"

Alreday made the adjustment. Instead of the 6 mile hike on the A.T., we are doing a local trail hiking 1 mile in and I'm cutting her weight significantly.

She has the legs to do an extended day-hike easily, so a 1 mile backpacking hike with 20lbs should be easy for her. Again this is assuming we get a pack that fits.

Nowslimmer: Ooops. My bad. I was thinking 700 calorie difference between expenditure and consumption. Of course you were exactly right. I guess I just wasn't ready to deal with taking in only 700 calories per day. Yikes!!!!

I eat more than that for lunch when I'm hiking! My calorie consumption during a day of backpacking is usually around 1600-1700 calories.

Not counting the liquor, of course....

hmm....wonder if i'm getting enough riboflaven.....

i read something...somewhere...might have been here on TT, but it was talking about looking at yer trail food in terms of calories per ounce(of actuall weight). it's an obviously simple comcept but i'd never thought of it in those terms.

Stratdewd had a wife AND a girlfriend? No wonder Saltlicks pack is so heavy.

Alright, Pedxing, I'm going to weigh myself each of the next three days to get an average of my current weight. I'm going on a five day trip starting Monday. Using your formula, I need about 14000 calories for that trip, total. I've counted the calories in all the food I'm taking, and it comes to 7,590. I should lose 1.83 pounds over the course of the trip (since I'm packing solo, I'll be able to keep a good pace). I can certainly stand to lose two pounds. I figure I've gained about three or four over the winter.

I'll let you know what actually happens. This will be experiment number two for the week, since I'm also experimenting with the canned chicken leg...
