Campmor has several decent bags for sale for under $100.00 Check them out at campmor.com.

REI has some pretty sweet deals on sleeping bags right now (on the website). I would go with a synthetic for a 12 year old.

"Wiggy's Guarantee is for a lifetime of use. If a seam opens, the zipper breaks or the Lamilite insulation deteriorates (such as losing its loft or separating, clumping in one place or another), Wiggy's will repair or replace your bag at no charge to you. "

Starting at 12, the guarantee could be a big deal.

Hey, mouse. Considering where the child is going to be, I would go with a 20 degree bag. It shouldn't get any colder than that, and if it is warmer, the boy can sleep on top of the bag. It's what I carry year 'round.
Scully's right, get one with Polarguard insulation.

It’s hard to give advice on temp rating without knowing exactly where he’d be going (mountains are generally cooler, etc.) but a 15-20 degree bag is a good general purpose bag. Have your friend ask the lowest temp expected and get a bag 10 degrees or so below that.

I second the idea of a synthetic bag for a kid. Make sure he knows not to store it in the stuff sack at home, it will get ruined by compacting the fill. Although they look confining, a mummy bag saves weight and space and is warmer to boot.

Campmor has a wide selection of inexpensive bags but don’t overlook Target’s Eddie Bauer stuff. I’ve never had any dealings with wiggy’s but there have been some real horror stories on the net which may or may not have any basis in reality.

In my not so humble opinion and because she's 12 years old (God bless her), I'd go to Canadian Tyre or, if you're American, Ames or Target or Walmart. Just be sure to get polyester 'hollow' fibres.

If she wants to continue an outdoor life, there will be lots of time to get quality equipment. Meanwhile a poly bag will do her just fine - unless, of course, her companions are into 'labels' (TNF, etc.).

Happy trails.

i would say a 20 degree, synthetic fill for canoe camping in canada in august. weight shouldn't be as big a consideration if it will be used for only canoe/car camping so a good deal should be able to be found. any of the halofil type insulations will be good and found cheap.
