FOOD! One of my favorite subjects “Preparing for the Rae Lakes trip we have run into a little snag. Our food plans have worked out well. Except lunch! Some of the things we were going to bring, after tasting, "YUK, POOH, SPIT, SPIT, GRRRR" are not good tasting. Do you TT'ers have any suggestions for lunches.... And please forget Tuna.. I have that but do not want Tuna for 6-7 days in a roll.. My taste buds and stomach are depending on you!” 8:45:46 PM 5/22/02 “We usually do tortillas with any type of filling. Peanut butter is the most common, but any type of cheese and/or summer sausage is also good. Apple slices are really good, or any fresh/rehydrated fruits.” 8:48:31 PM 5/22/02 “It all depends on your tastes and the time you want to take for lunch. A long lunch leaves time to cook almost anything. I usually just munch down a large snack myself. I tend to be a bit sluggish if i eat a lot for lunch.” 8:53:04 PM 5/22/02 “My typical lunch consists of some dried fruit, a granola bar and 1 oz. of semi-sweet chocolate (it tolerates the heat better).” 8:58:59 PM 5/22/02 “Tuna! j/k How bout one of them beef jerky sticks?” 9:02:02 PM 5/22/02 “Anchovie paste and hummus in a squeeze tube. I don't even have to stop walking.” 9:19:41 PM 5/22/02 “Italian Dry Salami, hard cheddar and Ritz crackers does it for me. On our last trip we took those really small pop top cans of Chicken looks like tuna but tastes like chicken ;) Those litle aluminum cans of Deviled Ham are not to bad either. Not real heavy either. Jif is making a product called smooth sensations... blackberry/peanut butter apple cinnamon/peanut butter You could fill a squeze tube with one of those and squeeze it on to something to eat.” 9:40:03 PM 5/22/02 “I don't fix a "lunch". I'll just snack all through the day. Once I start feeling like the fuel tank is low, I'll toss in a granola bar, cheese, peanutbutter, Chex Mix, or something like that. The only actual meal I eat on the trail is Supper. Breakfast is Carnation Instant Breakfast & a granola bar or something while I'm packing.” 9:41:05 PM 5/22/02 “From the Dollar General store, some deviled ham or potted meat food product on a hamburger bun. Or a fresh tomatoe and bread or a hamburger bun. Followed by some Sun-Maid Raisens from a small, 1.5 ounce package. On another day a cup of soup, a bread product or some salty crotons, a cup of hot tea, and some raisins. In place of raisins perhaps some Asian dried plums.” 9:49:57 PM 5/22/02 “I'm with Phaedrus, hummus in a squeeze tube and crackers. Also if it's not too hot, cheddar cheese travels well.” 9:57:45 PM 5/22/02 “Graham crackers and favorite spreads from a tube. pepperoni or salami chunks. dry breakfast cereal( lucky charm marshmallows remind me of freeze dried ice cream).dried fruit, reese's pieces, and M&M's. fruit leather. salted codfish.cornmeal bannock. sun dried tomatoes. dehydrated veggies. lot's of possibilities if you open your mind and take a good look in the supermarkets.” 11:02:04 PM 5/22/02 “Hummus and anchovy paste? Gawdamighty, Phaedrus, that $hit would make a buzzard puke! Egad!” 11:15:27 PM 5/22/02 Father Goose “I was thinking it was NOT a combination of Hummus and anchovy paste, but seperate. Not sure that I could handle the anchovy paste. Up here we don't say "that would make a buzzard puke!" We like, "That would gag a maggot."” 11:26:11 PM 5/22/02 “Drive a starvin' dog off a gut wagon!” 11:30:34 PM 5/22/02 “LOL, Biz... More tuna.... NOT.. Beef Jerky sticks could do. But only as a snack for me. I like to eat! I plan on stopping for lunch. And kicking back for an hour just enjoying it. The lunch food will be in a different Bear Canister than the breakfast and dinner food. There are some good ideas here. Sausage/pepperoni/salami and cheese on crackers. Is now on my list One question tho, how do you keep the cheese from molding? Tortillas with peanut butter is a great idea. And might be doable. Anchovies are out.. But thanks... I cannot find Hummis. Trader Joes out here does not carry it anymore. I love fresh fruit, but am not sure how long it will stay good in a pack. Thank you one and all for your help. And anyone else who has a good idea.” 11:58:54 PM 5/22/02 “Summer sausage and pepperjack cheese, and a bag of combos. WLD, cheese takes longer than you expect to go bad. Keep it outta the light and heat and it should last you several days. If it starts molding, just cut the offending section off. Its when it starts getting mushy, when the oil starts separting out, that you have a problem.” 12:06:15 AM 5/23/02 12:22:25 AM 5/23/02 “I am sold on the cheese... I will be taking some... Tekapo, the Moose Goo looks pretty good too!” 12:27:33 AM 5/23/02 “Here's a "link" to Fantastic Foods for hummus... http://www.awardsamericas.com/cons/fantastic.htm I made some of Joe's Moose Goo last week-its tasty! You could also just mix the PB with honey to slap on tortillas/bagels. If I'm out for longer than a weekend, I'll plan for a nice hot lunch or two-usually soup with extra noodles or rice&veggies from just tomatoes.” 1:43:31 AM 5/23/02 “IMHO, anybody who would swallow Moose Goo is a sick motherf^cker!” 1:46:55 AM 5/23/02 “There's nothing like stopping for a hot lunch. Pull out your stove and make some soup...” 3:47:13 AM 5/23/02 “PBJ tortillas and homemade jerky for lunch. I use small squeeze packages for the PBJ, they come in handy. I'd like to get one of those squeeze tubes though. After backpacking the last few years, I've decided that I don't like to cook on backpacking trips. Works for me.” 5:43:14 AM 5/23/02 “Powerbars and a slightly mushed peanut butter sandwich, all downed with a little Gatorade.” 6:38:38 AM 5/23/02 Hey if your stopping for an hour... “Fantastic foods make a variety of dehydrated goodies that you can pick up at the grocery store. They have pretty good refried beans, you just add boiling water and let them sit for 5 min. slap 'em in a tortilla add some cheese or other goodies ...mmmmmmmm goooooooood!” 7:53:41 AM 5/23/02 “I'm with the tortilla crowd. I started taking them a couple years ago and you can put anything on them; even jerky, Biz! Actually I prefer pepperoni and mozzerella sticks.” 8:04:02 AM 5/23/02 “Cliff bars, pbj in squeeze tubes, tuna/chicken in foil pouch, tortillas or pita bread, jerky or dried sausage, little packs of mayo rippped off from sandwhich shops.” 8:52:58 AM 5/23/02 “The chicken in the foil pouches is really good mixed with the horsey sauce from Arbys. I also like the dehydrated stuff that can be rehydrated in 5 minutes. Spanish rice and lentil soup are two that I have had in the past.” 8:57:38 AM 5/23/02 “WLD, Get the powdered hummus and add water. This is a really lightweight lunch. Sprinkle with sun-dried tomatoes and eat with wheat thins. Look in the international section of your grocery store.” 9:43:27 AM 5/23/02 “We did, we could not find it. Stater Bros... I guess I could check the other grocery stores... I will get back with you today...” 9:52:11 AM 5/23/02 Photos “Snow Nymph, When time permits can you e-mail me and go through how you took the address of the photos I placed on Webshots and posted on Montanapalooza and changed it so all one has to do is click on it directly from here to access them?” 9:56:18 AM 5/23/02 “I haven't seen chicken in the foil pouches. Who makes it? If you stop as long as an hour, it is hard to beat soup, especially if it's cold out. Soft tortilla shells are great for sandwiches.” 10:32:22 AM 5/23/02 “Day 1: Potato roll, roast beef & swiss cheese sandwhich Everyday thereafter: Tuna & crackers, or Minute rice mixed with a can of chicken (add Top Ramen flavoring or salt/pepper). Lukewarm water will cook Minute rice. Oranges keep pretty well and are tasty when you're thirsty. Also, raw carrots. I also bring cashews, crackers, chocolate and dried apricots to munch on.” 10:37:40 AM 5/23/02 “all of the above suggestions are good, but everybody is missing one of my have to haves... they are kinda heavy and not the easiest to pack either.... FIG NEWTONS!” 11:22:18 AM 5/23/02 “I mix my own GORP: granola, dates, cashews is one way and the supermarket has bins of things like dried pineapple and bananas as well as assortments of nuts and things to make varieties. I can eat it while walking or taking a break. I break it down in zipper bags so I can keep it handy while walking. Breakfast and dinner are the hot meals. For breakfast I sometimes hard boil eggs, load them in the plastic containers, and chop them up into instant grits. That's good on short trips and the early part of long trips. Summer sausage is also good for lunch on short trips. I may take hard rolls and some brie as well, depending on the weather. I've given up hiking in hot weather. It's just not fun!” 12:07:30 PM 5/23/02 6:17:22 PM 5/23/02 anchovie paste????????? “I'd rather scrap my forehead with a cheese grater while chewing on tin-foil... . . . talk about yer catfood breath!” 10:45:50 PM 5/23/02 “Violin, I saw the Chicken in foil pouches next to the Tuna in a pouch. It only came in 7 oz, but they should come out with the smaller ones soon (at least they did with the tuna). Geezr, I sent you a Email. Another thing I like for lunch is the Brie in a can in a box.” 3:51:01 AM 5/24/02
