Yes, my Mountain Hardware Mountain Kilt (read "Skirt") is here!

Bad news first: This is a complex piece of machinery. There more belts, buckles, and snaps than...well...I don't know...something with lots of belts, buckles, and snaps. Further, the XL runs pretty small. I can barely get the top belt connected. I'm big, but I'm no Jerry Springer freak show.

The good news: You probably only have to attach all the belts, buckles, and snaps once a day, since the call of nature can be answered with a simple lifting motion. Second, I actually think it looks pretty cool. I don't think I look girly...at least not as girly as a girly girl. Finally, and most importantly, it is soooooo comfortable. As expected, this thing has incredible ventilation. My naughty bits will be thanking me.

I'm certainly bringing this contraption with me on the AT this summer. Since I haven't actually hiked in it yet, I'll bring my old pair of hiking shorts with me in the beginning, just in case. But I'm definitely looking forward to testing this baby out. Look out for a large red-headed guy in a kilt on the AT!

Now all you need is a Gore-tex sporran on your hip-belt and a sgian dubh in the top o' your right sock (unless you're left-handed).

You'll need to work on those Bobby Burns excerpts, too. Like:

The best laid schemes o' Mice an' Men,
Gang aft agley,
An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,
For promis'd joy!

from To A Mouse

AND...

To thole the winter's sleety dribble,
An' cranreuch could!

(From the very same poem)

And you thought all you had to do was figure out the straps and buckles? Nooooooooooo... not hardly. That's just the start.

How do you feel about single malts?

chips76, are you going to wear knee socks with your kilt? In Scouts, the summer uniform included knee socks with garters that had little red tassles. Very comfortable and snazzy on the trail...see the Pith Helmet Gallery at Phil's Photo Page.

Forget the bagpipes, bring the ultralight version:

a wounded cat on a rope.

They make the same sound.

Cat-on-a-rope, eh? Kinda reminds me of the classic Bob Dylan Simulator: a hound-dog caught in barbed wire (excuse me... 'bob-war').

ACtually... I was thinking of lighter-weight Irish version: Uilleann Pipes. You wouldn't need a complete set; that practice chanter would probably clear out a square mile of forest in no time.

(or you could get a penny-whistle for 10 bucks...)

Definition of perfect pitch:

You throw the accordion in the dumpster and it lands squarely on the bagpipes.

Classic Far Side:

"Welcome to Hell. Here's your accordian."

Everybody POLKA!

Actually more like a thousand or so were out today at the Hoghland games here. Pretty cool. The haggis pocket and the bridie thingy (sausage in pastry) weren't bad for lunch either. Laurel took her current favorite stuffed animal with her (a little dragon I named Lily) and she found Lily's big brother on display so of course she had to have it. ;) After we finally left I came back and crashed for a good 2 hour nap. It was pretty hot out in the sun today. Laurel's been running around all day and will sleep like a rock I think.

Nope, HPM didn't get a kilt. More research is required to find the appropriate plaid for him.

I didn't know a kilt came with a haggis pocket and a bridle thingy. Those things are complicated than I thought.
