“Anyone hit the Superior hiking trail in the past week or two?”

“I was up there over memorial weekend, great weather, i did from oberg mountain to cascade river sp, awesome views, crowded... i expected it this weekend though, the leaves aren't coming on the trees yet, and there was one crisp morning, but it was great, i'd do that section again.”

After mulling a request to open a lengthy portion of the North Shore State Trail to all-terrain vehicles, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has decided against it — for now.

DNR Commissioner Gene Merriam said Wednesday such an action is premature, especially with the agency already trying to finish a comprehensive inventory of state forests for future trail designations. He also cited an array of administrative obstacles.

"We do not allow ATVs to use the trail at this time,'' Merriam said in a statement. "And if we were to consider a change in the future, that decision would be made only after a very public process.''

The 146-mile trail between Duluth and Grand Marais is open to snowmobiles in the winter, but is limited to hiking and other nonmotorized use in the summer. It is separate from the Superior Hiking Trail.
