I found out that I will stationed at Minot, North Dakota. Are there any TT'ers that are from North Dakota? Has anyone ever been there? It may not be the best assignment but it is close to home home MN.

From Alaska to North Dakota! You seem to land the killer remote placements.. not from the area, but good luck with the move.

I was thinking the same thing. What's next for kodiakman, Thule, Greenland?

Kodiak, North Dakota is basically eastern MT. I hate to say it, but there's not much out there. I do know some kids who go to school in Minot though, and they seem to think there's good partying there.

Minot seems like a nice town. I drove through last year. It's situated in sort of a bowl surrounded by prarie.

As they say, "Why Not Minot?" I've stayed there a few times. It's not a bad little college town (Minot State Univ.) and it's not too far to the Teddy Roosevelt National park/Little Missouri badlands. That's becoming quite the mountain biking Mecca! Also close is Lake Sakakawea on the Missouri 50 miles south.

Well, the answer used to be that there was a map somewhere in the Soviet Union, with a big bullseye centered on Minot, but I guess that's not true anymore, is it?

That's right! They're dimantling those old Minuteman missles out there. Some of those guys have been down in the silos for 25 years! Someone needs to tell them the Cold war is over.

Boy I bet you'd be able to get one of those real cheap. I hear the silos make great swimming and diving pools after they fill with groundwater.

You hit the jackpot. North Dakota is a great place. If your a bird hunter, you just died and went to heaven. I would be doing standing backflips from sheer excitement (I'm from Milwaukee). Turtle Mountains, Theodore Roosevelt Nat'l Park, Maah Daah Trail. It's all good. Montana is not far away.

Devils Lake is just east of Minot, I spent a couple of weeks there with the Guard. There are some nice and remote recreation areas around there.
Advice: Get some really warm long johns, and a good shovel for snow.
Good Luck!!

Learn Norweigian, to love smoked German sausage, kuchen, and all purpose phrases like, "ya sure, you bet, Ole."

I took a puddle jumper that landed in Minot a few years back. My condo in Chicago was larger than the terminal!
(Sorry, then I headed to Saskatoon.)

Well, Alaska has taught you to deal with the cold, but now you'll have to deal with very few trees and not much elevation variety. However, the Badlands at TRNP are tres cool, there is a lot more wildlife than most folks would ever suspect (if you like ducks, I had never seen such variety as when I drove out to hike TRNP a year ago and passed lots of prairie ponds, lakes and puddles). There are Finns around Minot, too. It hosted FinnFest USA a couple years ago. You'll also get Division I ice hockey courtesy of the Fighting Sioux in UND, assuredly carried on ND television. It seemed to be a lot like the U.P. as far as remoteness issues...a three-hour drive to another town is considered local travel. A Dakotan colleague told me to stay off back dirt roads if it rains -- they quickly turn to clay quagmires.

My brothers were born in Minot and I was born in Hazen. My sister lives in Watford City. The first question I asked her is, "How far are you from the Badlands?" I'm thinking I need to visit her and my brand new niece. Oh, and maybe visit the Badlands since I'll be out that way anyhoo. :o)

I'm sure you'll enjoy it if you set your mind to it.

I dig South Dakota myself. Black Hills is Awesome! Can't you get a gig around Rapid City S.D.?
I believe you'll be hiking mostly Grassland in ND.

I drove through N. Dakota once. Couldn't tell I was moving at all except for Bismark and the welcome to Minnesota sign.

GTood luck finding dates bro, I have a feeling that the only single women in N. Dakota are the ones passing through in thier RV's.

You'll have to check out the Badlands/Black Hills, and Devils Tower.

Good luck bro!

I just got a picture in my mind of kodiakman, standing beside the interstate, holding up a sign that says "DATE?"

Surely they post women at Minot now....

The problem is, there's nothing to see in those 100 miles! And had there been something there the wind would have long since blown it away.

North Dakota
N. D. has some great billboard advertising that they use for tourism.
"North Dakota: Mountain relocation project completed."
"North Dakota: Custer was healthy when he left here."

What is the state song of North Dakota? State tree, bird, animal, and flower? This will be interesting research and you can report back.
See, there's lots of things to do in ND.
Notre Dame, that is.

Giant Plastic Animal Capital of the US!!
Welllll, you have the Geographical Center of North America at Rugby, plus all the giant plastic animals; the Giant Cow at New Salem, the Giant Bison at Jamestown, the Gorilla (now in a pasture somewhere near Harvey. Oh and the Giant Turtle made out tire rims at Dunseith.

It's probably the Big Damn Hole In The Ground With A Missle In It capital too.

Even with all the decommissioning that's been going on.
