Scary HappeningView MessagesSomething Scary Happened To Me “Okay, maybe you guys can help me figure something out. This weekend (Sun. night to be exact). I went out to eat. I had a shrimp quesdilla (sp?). It tasted fine to me. I felt completely fine when I left. When I got home, I was standing on the porch talking w/ my bud when all the sudden I got an intense, quick feeling of the blood draining from my face. I knew I was about to faint, but I didn't have a chance to react. I fell flat on my face. I came to just as I hit the ground. I started to get up and it happened a second time. At this point my bud was trying to help me walk into the house and I fainted for a third time. That time I felt like I was out forever. When I came to I had to vomit. Within 10 mins. from that, I was completely fine. I felt as if it hadn't even happened. I am really confused about this and unsure of what happened. Do you think I had an allergic reaction or food poisoning or what? I have never had anything like that happen before.” 10:21:02 AM 5/28/02 “Certain seafood, like shrimp, lobster, and crab, have high concentrations of iodine, you may be allergic to that.” 10:27:35 AM 5/28/02 “Certain seafoods, like shrimp, lobster, and crab, have high concentrations of iodine, you may be allergic to that.” 10:27:42 AM 5/28/02 “Sounds strange. Might be either. Maybe a trip to the doc is in order. Allergies to shellfish are funny. My mom used to love shrimp, but in her early thirties she developed an allergy to them and can't eat them anymore. But it doesn't really sound like you had an anaphylactic response.” 10:28:58 AM 5/28/02 “I have had shrimp and other seafoods plenty of times, but I have heard of people developing allergies to stuff later in life. I don't know what an allergic reaction is like though, so I have no clue if that is what happened. I am also wondering if I should see a doctor. It was very scary.” 10:32:20 AM 5/28/02 “I dated a woman in college who used to do that. I dumped her like a rock. No, seriously. She used to faint especially after rich meals (shrimp and cheese in a quesadilla maybe). She did it to me once after we treated ourselves to a nice dinner out. We were walking out of the restuarant when she fainted (I was facing her, so was able to catch and direct her down.) Then she fainted again sitting there on the step. She always associated it with big meals. Maybe the blood was all going to work on digestion and left your head??? I dunno.” 10:36:41 AM 5/28/02 “Did you feel like you were having trouble breathing? That's the most common anaphylactic response, although there are others. I am personally kinda leaning toward food poisoning, but I'm not really a doctor, I just play one on TT. I'd go see a real doc if I were you.” 10:36:53 AM 5/28/02 “I realize that you guys don't necessarily have med. training, I'm just wondering if someone has had a similiar experience or knows something about it. I did not feel like I was having trouble breathing. It happened very, very quickly and after I vomited, I did not continue to feel badly. I felt completely good.” 10:41:14 AM 5/28/02 “at the mexican taco stands where(LA) i eat, they post warnings about the toxicity of shellfish and that ingesting them can be fatal. passing out 3 times is not a good thing.” 10:43:43 AM 5/28/02 “Food coma...... most likely. Same thing happened to me years ago. About 30 minutes after chowing a huge meal, I met some buddies out for drinks. About three sips into the beer, I was heading for the floor face first. They all yanked me back to my feet and place me a the narrow bar stool from which I fell and within moments I was keeling over and heading for the floor a second time. I did have a vomiting episode when I went out to get some air. I went to the ER shortly after that. They ran some test, everything check out OK. But my Dr. made me wear a monitor(tape recorder) a few days later that recorded body rhythm on pressure areas. Nothing become of that, he gave it some fancy term but in laymen terms I had fainted. Its worth a look into but I bet you just fainted. Was the meal big? It may have lowered your blood pressure.” 10:45:25 AM 5/28/02 yikes, that is scary! “that happened to me once, but i don't think it was a reaction to anything, because i'd just gotten up. i was up on a counter trying to get a bowl down, and all of a sudden i knew i was going to faint. i fell off the counter, i guess, and hit myself in the head with the bowl, LOL! adding injury to injury. my mom said she heard a big crash, and found me out like a light. then i woke up and puked. i went to the doctor...they said they didn't know what made me do that, but that most people faint once or twice in their lives. it's never happened since...” 10:46:08 AM 5/28/02 “Vasovagal response, maybe? I used to date a girl who passed out when I kissed her. I don't know if it was passion or my breath, but there she was on the floor nonetheless....” 10:53:30 AM 5/28/02 “I DO have medical training.... Three words for you, see your doctor.” 11:10:48 AM 5/28/02 “I'm a computer geek at a hospital and I just asked several nurses what could have caused it. They said it sounded like something similar to what happens to pregnant women. Your aorta is in between your stomach and backbone, it gets squeezed from too much food and slows down the blood flow to the heart making you weak, woozy, etc. Disclaimer: I know nothing!!!!” 11:29:54 AM 5/28/02 “This happened Sunday night and you haven't seen a doctor yet?” 11:36:17 AM 5/28/02 “That's what I was going to say. You are pregnant!!!! LMBO” 11:40:14 AM 5/28/02 “Thank you Pamster. Newgirl, it is fine to speculate and compare notes with friends, most of us do the same thing, but pretty please go see your doc.” 12:07:05 PM 5/28/02 “actually I would say if it is not bothering you now then don't bother with the doc - mark it up to gremlins and forget about it unless it happens again.” 12:29:32 PM 5/28/02 “Briar - the beer... you didn't tell us what happened to the beer! Chewy - I don't have medical training, but if I did, I'd recommend ONE word: ...bulimia I once read that food poisining doesn't take affect for 12 to 36 hours.” 12:43:20 PM 5/28/02 “Were you eating pretzels?” 12:48:51 PM 5/28/02 “My paranoid self is asking if your 'bud' slipped you something. How well do you know this guy?” 12:51:14 PM 5/28/02 WHAT?! “Some punk-ass, bow-legged, cow pokin' bastard messin' with my Chewy?! I pity the fool! Ooooooooo... just him wait!” 1:03:30 PM 5/28/02 “Some info on some common club drugs, including Ecstasy, GHB, Rohypnol, and Ketamine. This is a NIDA page.” 1:05:06 PM 5/28/02 “we go from what newgirl said to pregnancy to bulemia to club drugs?!? people! (i wish someone would slip me some of those after dinner, LMAO! not some pregnancies...never mind.)” 1:32:32 PM 5/28/02 “there goes lyra, slip-sliding away again.... lol...” 1:34:53 PM 5/28/02 “yo, bitpusher! did you have a good weekend, aside from the mucus? or phlegm, if you would prefer... either way, yummmm! ;-)” 1:39:48 PM 5/28/02 “Yah it was okay. I took Friday off and spent the day mostly bumming around at home. Saturday the same. I got out for a dayhike on Sunday. I took at lot of pictures that I plan to post when I get them developed. Spent Monday at my wife's grandmother's. That's when I had the real phlegm problem! Ugh...” 1:44:06 PM 5/28/02 “well, i just hope you shared with everyone! ;-)” 1:48:09 PM 5/28/02 “To be sure. I'm thinking of writing an ode to phlegm....” 1:53:21 PM 5/28/02 “at least a recipe book! milkshakes, pancake toppings, salad dressings...sluuuurp!” 2:00:00 PM 5/28/02 “IMHO: Gojo's right. It happened too quickly to be food poisoning. Pam is right: Go see your doctor. It's probably a freak thing that will never happen again. But, you've only got one body. When things go wrong, it often shows up in ways that are easy to discount. Other explanations are readily available and its easy to write 'em off. You've got a full life, you are busy and you don't want to be a PITA - but when your body doesn't do what its supposed to its important to push for answers and get the doctors to take a serious look. I learned this the hard way. 99 times out of 100, its nothing. But over a life time, those ain't good odds. Go to a doctor.” 2:00:18 PM 5/28/02 “Given the amount of it and frequency of my sneezes, no doubt it's been all of the above....” 2:08:58 PM 5/28/02 “Yeah, you'd do well to go see a doc. A simple and short appointment just to be sure. You have newergirl to think about too.” 2:18:52 PM 5/28/02 Just remembered... “Had my own scary happening on Saturday. (and no lyra, it had nothing to do with phlegm) Anyway, I'm lighting the charcoal for dinner, and I'm blowing on it to get it started. Kneeling in front of the charcoal fire, breathing in, blowing out, getting the coals good and glowing. So I get tired of that and stand up...and I get really woozy, and my head starts to spin a bit. Not too bad, but disconcerting. Then I realize that I was probably poisoning myself with carbon monoxide from the charcoal fire. What an idiot! Glad I didn't pass out into it like that guy on survivor did....” 2:22:18 PM 5/28/02 as a veteran of food poisoning... “I don't think that's it... but who can tell... see your Dr. You don't want this happening again, you never know, next time you could be driving” 2:26:10 PM 5/28/02 “The bud is actually my cousin. I'm 100% positive that he didn't slip me anything. And I am also 100% positive that I am not pregnant. If I am, it was a frickin' immaculate conception and I'll need a priest, not a doc. (Been a long dry spell around these parts . . . self-imposed, but all the same. HeHeHe.) So, those 2 things can be immediately thrown out. Also, according to you guys it sounds like food poisoning and allergic reactions can be thrown out. I think I'll call my doc. right now. I'll read the info. about the club drugs all the same, who knows . . . . maybe the waiter slipped me something. Briar, I think my blood pressure dropped alot. To like, nothing.” 2:29:08 PM 5/28/02 “Bit, I read the info. and that doesn't sound like what happened to me. Thanks. I made an appointment w/ my doc. for Thurs.” 2:48:18 PM 5/28/02 “I also had a Scary Happening this weekend. I was driving to my aunt's cottage, was on a very soft dirt road, and my car went out of control. I don't even think I hit the brake. Did a 180, the weeds and brush on the side of the road finally stopped me. Very scary. Luckily, nothing in me or the car was damaged.” 2:56:27 PM 5/28/02 “That is scary Smiley. Glad to hear you are okay.” 3:04:12 PM 5/28/02 “Thanks, Newgirl. I tried not to tell my dad cause I knew he'd freak out, but word eventually got to him. Of course, he freaked. He started yelling (he thought I was doing like 80mph) and said he was glad he wasn't making funeral plans!!” 3:14:56 PM 5/28/02 “Sheesh! I'm glad to hear everyone made it through the weekend in one piece!” 3:24:22 PM 5/28/02 “Newgirl and Smiley Girl...glad you gals didn't banged up your pretty faces....take care out there. N.G...go see a doctor.” 3:33:47 PM 5/28/02 “Appointment is for Thurs.!!!” 3:45:47 PM 5/28/02 “Tilt - "in one piece" ... nope not even one.” 4:02:09 PM 5/28/02 “Something scary happened to me I told the waiter "More quesadillas please!" Dropped out of school and the circus joined me I awoke with a penguin in my briefcase.” 4:06:26 PM 5/28/02 What rhymes with phlegm? “Phlegm, phlegm, phlegm she found that which was writ in water deeply viable Huggin' a commode and coughin' up phlegm cereal boxes become cardboard bibles” 4:15:13 PM 5/28/02 “'Scuse me?” 5:13:51 PM 5/28/02 “yuk, Marvin. HOI -- perhaps I should've said, "... in each of our respective pieces"? NAH... LOL” 5:14:20 PM 5/28/02 “NG -- did you put de lime in de coconut?” 5:16:13 PM 5/28/02 “DON'T MESS AROUND GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR!!!!!!! 8|” 6:00:50 PM 5/28/02
