Scary Happening

“Okay, maybe you guys can help me figure something out. This weekend (Sun. night to be exact). I went out to eat. I had a shrimp quesdilla (sp?). It tasted fine to me. I felt completely fine when I left. When I got home, I was standing on the porch talking w/ my bud when all the sudden I got an intense, quick feeling of the blood draining from my face. I knew I was about to faint, but I didn't have a chance to react. I fell flat on my face. I came to just as I hit the ground. I started to get up and it happened a second time. At this point my bud was trying to help me walk into the house and I fainted for a third time. That time I felt like I was out forever. When I came to I had to vomit. Within 10 mins. from that, I was completely fine. I felt as if it hadn't even happened. I am really confused about this and unsure of what happened. Do you think I had an allergic reaction or food poisoning or what? I have never had anything like that happen before.”

Allergies to shellfish are funny. My mom used to love shrimp, but in her early thirties she developed an allergy to them and can't eat them anymore. But it doesn't really sound like you had an anaphylactic response.”

“I have had shrimp and other seafoods plenty of times, but I have heard of people developing allergies to stuff later in life. I don't know what an allergic reaction is like though, so I have no clue if that is what happened. I am also wondering if I should see a doctor. It was very scary.”

No, seriously. She used to faint especially after rich meals (shrimp and cheese in a quesadilla maybe). She did it to me once after we treated ourselves to a nice dinner out. We were walking out of the restuarant when she fainted (I was facing her, so was able to catch and direct her down.) Then she fainted again sitting there on the step.

She always associated it with big meals. Maybe the blood was all going to work on digestion and left your head???

I am personally kinda leaning toward food poisoning, but I'm not really a doctor, I just play one on TT. I'd go see a real doc if I were you.”

Same thing happened to me years ago. About 30 minutes after chowing a huge meal, I met some buddies out for drinks. About three sips into the beer, I was heading for the floor face first. They all yanked me back to my feet and place me a the narrow bar stool from which I fell and within moments I was keeling over and heading for the floor a second time. I did have a vomiting episode when I went out to get some air.

I went to the ER shortly after that. They ran some test, everything check out OK. But my Dr. made me wear a monitor(tape recorder) a few days later that recorded body rhythm on pressure areas. Nothing become of that, he gave it some fancy term but in laymen terms I had fainted.

Its worth a look into but I bet you just fainted. Was the meal big? It may have lowered your blood pressure.”

“that happened to me once, but i don't think it was a reaction to anything, because i'd just gotten up. i was up on a counter trying to get a bowl down, and all of a sudden i knew i was going to faint. i fell off the counter, i guess, and hit myself in the head with the bowl, LOL! adding injury to injury. my mom said she heard a big crash, and found me out like a light. then i woke up and puked. i went to the doctor...they said they didn't know what made me do that, but that most people faint once or twice in their lives. it's never happened since...”

“I'm a computer geek at a hospital and I just asked several nurses what could have caused it. They said it sounded like something similar to what happens to pregnant women. Your aorta is in between your stomach and backbone, it gets squeezed from too much food and slows down the blood flow to the heart making you weak, woozy, etc.

“Yah it was okay. I took Friday off and spent the day mostly bumming around at home. Saturday the same. I got out for a dayhike on Sunday. I took at lot of pictures that I plan to post when I get them developed. Spent Monday at my wife's grandmother's. That's when I had the real phlegm problem!

It's probably a freak thing that will never happen again. But, you've only got one body. When things go wrong, it often shows up in ways that are easy to discount. Other explanations are readily available and its easy to write 'em off. You've got a full life, you are busy and you don't want to be a PITA - but when your body doesn't do what its supposed to its important to push for answers and get the doctors to take a serious look.

I learned this the hard way. 99 times out of 100, its nothing. But over a life time, those ain't good odds. Go to a doctor.”

Anyway, I'm lighting the charcoal for dinner, and I'm blowing on it to get it started. Kneeling in front of the charcoal fire, breathing in, blowing out, getting the coals good and glowing. So I get tired of that and stand up...and I get really woozy, and my head starts to spin a bit. Not too bad, but disconcerting. Then I realize that I was probably poisoning myself with carbon monoxide from the charcoal fire. What an idiot! Glad I didn't pass out into it like that guy on survivor did....”

If I am, it was a frickin' immaculate conception and I'll need a priest, not a doc. (Been a long dry spell around these parts . . . self-imposed, but all the same. HeHeHe.) So, those 2 things can be immediately thrown out. Also, according to you guys it sounds like food poisoning and allergic reactions can be thrown out. I think I'll call my doc. right now. I'll read the info. about the club drugs all the same, who knows . . . . maybe the waiter slipped me something. Briar, I think my blood pressure dropped alot. To like, nothing.”

“I also had a Scary Happening this weekend. I was driving to my aunt's cottage, was on a very soft dirt road, and my car went out of control. I don't even think I hit the brake. Did a 180, the weeds and brush on the side of the road finally stopped me. Very scary. Luckily, nothing in me or the car was damaged.”
