DD, here's a url for updated trail maps of the Dolly Sods from the West Virginia Highlands Conservancy. Just got back from a trip there in early May and I'm also shooting for another trip in late September or early October. What part of the Sods are you shooting for?

Geobeet, all I know is we're doin the wilderness section. The guy I'm goin with is plannin the route. I have never been to the Sods but he has. Any paticular part that you recommend? Have you been to Cranberry wilderness? That Big Beechy trail was killer in Feb. with the snow.

I've been thinking about "Hiker Dude". In the gift shop in Yosemite they have these stuffed "Dude" figures, like Climber Dude, Ranger Dude etc. I have a "Hiker Dude" sitting on my monitor here at work. It kind of looks like me, blonde hair, sun glasses, red backpack etc.

We'll see.

I have not been in the wilderness section yet. As far as what to see, there is no such thing as a bad part of the Sods. I've been back and forth on the northern section, which is plateau with bogs and low hills. Part of the wilderness is an eastern canyon cut by Red Creek with beautiful scenes. But a series of floods has scoured it out pretty much from what I understand, at least in parts. Above the canyon on the eastern side are some trails that skirt the edge of the plateau. If your friend has been, you are in pretty good hands.
South of the Dolly Sods (and the wilderness area) is Roaring Plains. The ridge is a piece of plateau that has been cut up by stream erosion, but it is still a fairly broad ridge. There are many trails along that section as well.
I find it hard to leave the Sods regardless of what I've done. I come home wondering what it is that I just don't get. Oh yeah, I have to make money.
If you want to see some excellent photos of the Dolly Sods, go to www.jonathanjessup.com
He's hiked the area extensively and his photography is outstanding. Most of his photos are of places up on the plateau and Roaring Plains, but they will probably make you start foaming at the mouth.
I have not hiked the Cranberry Backcountry at all. I did camp at Tea Creek Campground for a couple of days, see the glades, and the Falls of Hills Creek. But I never seem to find the time to get down that way for any length of time. The glades are interesting, although you cannot see much of them from the boardwalk. On the other hand, the boardwalk shows most of what grows in the glades and limiting public access protects the larger glades from idiots.
There are some sizeable bogs on the Dolly Sods, but they are not as watered as the Cranberry Glades. If you hike into the wilderness area, you will skirt an old beaver meadow that is somewhat boggy, but a larger bog is accessed from the short Northlands Loop Trail just south of the campground. Fishers Spring Run Bog is larger, and Dobbins Slashings Bog outside the forest service boundary is probably the granddaddy of the Sods bogs. For the most part, these are hummucky bogs with heath plants trying to establish themselves.

Never got into Jerry Jeff. My favorites were John Prine and Gordon Lightfoot. Also liked a host of others, but Jerry Jeff was not among them. I credit Prine with starting the breakup of my first marriage, along with a number of other issues, including a long backpacking trip that was covered in another thread (whining). Most people couldn't stand Prine because he sounded too "country." The lyrics were what they were and the lyrics were (and still are for that matter) good. Muhlenberg County is a classic of understatement, Sam Stone was about the most sensitive song I ever heard, and Flag Decal and Illegal Smile were slaps at the establishment. And then there was Donald and Lydia, a real hoot. The chorus of The Accident (things could have been worse) is worth recalling from time to time when bigots sound off. A lot of his songs make good trail walking songs.
