why?
first off this is not directed towards any one person!
now Id like to know is why is it when someone (ok maybe just me) posts a question about wanting to buy an item ex. boat, snowboard, skatboard, skies and things like that why is it that instead of telling me what you think about the PRODUCT I get a lecture about safty? I am a 36 yr mother of 3 married for 15 yrs. why would i want to buy something that would put myself or my family in harms way? all I want to know if, you bought this item and if so is it worth it?

ok I feel better. like i said this is not towards anyone that i have chatted with here. its just a general question.

habit?

or since you are seeking (which suggests inexperience or limited knowledge with the item), perhaps we are trying to pass on information gained from experience.

(I am almost 70, father of six children, and have been married 15 years several times! I can still use help and advice from other people, and appreciate such.)

What aero said.

Sorry if I have offended you.

around here, opening your mouth gives people the opportunity to say anything they want. Now for some advice... ;-)

Most people never consider safety. Some of us ask others to consider it or simply post it as a reminder.

Age and being a parent of X-kids or being married X-years is irrelevant to safety. I have met plenty of people who should know better who were a danger to themselves and others either through honest inexperience, immaturity or blatant disregard.

I teach outdoor skills to kids and I never fail to hear "My dad said to do it this way." That's great kid but "Dad's way" will get you killed and put me and my assistants in harms way trying to save your bacon.

Watersports are particularly worrysome to me as most people totally ignore the most basic of safety precautions. Look at the threads, we have a great recent example of what not to do on a canoe trip. Luckily they made it home safely, enjoyed themselves and hopefully they learned a little bit in the process. I know I learned a lot by screwing up but I hope to help other avoid my mistakes.

But yeah Artex is right, I do care and I know several others on this board that I think I can say they care too.

For Your Protection .... Posting general questions on trail talk can cause permanent loss of sanity, Please be sure to read the thread on how to make a tin foil hat and always wear it while posting.

Maybe your name suggests that you are blowing in the breeze, and people want to make sure that you are securely anchored.

Secretly though, they hope that you are a WILD flower.

j/k

It is funny how giving advice on this board usually ignites all manner of arguement. Just advise someone that they should filter their water and you will get a 125-post thread on the pros and cons. So don't take things personally EVER!

true
i mean what makes them think if i want to buy my kids a raft that i would not have life perservs or make sure they can swim. i do take all the necessary precautions when it comes to safty.

we didn't do anything wrong on our canoe trip. you think drinking beer while sitting on your life jacket for a cusion, refusing to row through rapids and occassionally standing up and acting like we were surfing is dangerous? just kidding, we rowed through the rapids.,

seriously, though the trip wasn't half as bad as the report would lead someone who wasn't there to believe. when stikmon tipped that was no danger, the water was like knee high. there were 2 spots where the water was somewhat rough, but it was fun rough, not dangerous rough. by the time we had gotten on the river, it was only high but below flood stage. it was moving so slow at most parts that it felt like it took 2 hours to paddle a mile. and i was wearing my life jacket. i got a way better canoe seat than that.

Like I said, I've done things I shouldn't have also. I don't claim to be perfect.

I find doing the above in an overloaded canoe on a closed river to be dangerous. I've almost drowned several times doing similar stuff without beer. It wasn't fun.

Glad y'all had a good time and made it home safe.

all i got to say is that if someone would have tried to tell us not to put our boats in the water that person would have probably ended up in the water himself. jk, actually the river wasn't closed anymore when we got on it, just higher than usual or something like that. for experienced paddlers only or something
