Thoughts about milk!!
Any of you pack powered milk and dry cereal for breakfast?

If so what kinda of milk do you like and any tips on a mixing ratio for say a bowls worth of cereal (8oz.)? Do you prepack cereal and powdered milk for ready use in ziplocs? Or do you mix a whole qt's. worth and drink it all? Do you think chocolate powder would have toubles mixing in too?

Any 'hi power' cereals that are your fav.'s to carry? Ever since I had this MT. House Blueberry Granola thingy for breakfast I've been itchin to make my own.

I usually pack a home-made granola that includes powdered milk and eat it dry. To wash it down is juice and/or coffee.

I add hot water to powdered milk, oatmeal, granola and dried fruit, Briar. I don't know what it would taste like cold.

If you're making instant oatmeal, coffee creamer is good to add for a creamier, richer flavor. I already have a supply for my coffee, so I take along some extra for the oatmeal. Powdered milk is pretty hard to stomach for me. About the only use I might have for it would be in cooking, in which case I'd prefer using coffee creamer anyway.
The only use I could think of for powdered milk would be if you expected to get lost, you could leave a trail of it to follow on the way back out. No animal would want it, so it would still be there.
On trips of a week or longer, I end up building up a craving for milk. Whenever I can make a side trip to a store, I buy a quart of real milk and wolf it down. Powdered? Blahhh!

I can get powdered whole milk in the ethnic foods section at the store. It's nestle brand, but produced in Mexico. It's actually very good. I also usually do the creamer thing, but this is much better.

'Boost' also comes in a powder to be mixed with milk. Too bad it tastes like drinking chalk. Works, though. 8 ounces fills you up like a full meal and is the nutritional equivalent of a full meal with a multivitamin.

use REAL milk - keep cows employed !
Powdered skim milk can be mixed at a higher concentration than the label states for a not-so-skim illusion. I use it that way premixed with cold cereal, instant oatmeal, cheesecake mix from the grocery, instant pudding, hot cocoa, instant mashed potatoes, and anything else I think might be better with milk. Powdered coffee creamer makes me gag, can't even use it in coffee.

The milk also adds protein, extra calories, calcium & more nutrients. I buy a top quality brand as I think I notice a difference, and store it in the freezer at home after it's opened for quality retention.

My $.02

I do oatmeal as my fave breakfast, but I can't do dry milk either,, I use parmalat, in juice box size,, I know it's weight, but at least it still tastes like milk! It's a super pasturized milk,, needs no refrigeration.

The tastiest powdered milk I've had is the "Milkman" brand. Has anyone seen it around lately?

More Thoughts on Milk, Briar Rabbit
You asked about premixing and quantities: For a bowl of dry cold cereal that I want to mix with a cup of milk, I put the ceral + dry milk in a Ziploc and just add cold water in camp. Use 1/3 cup or more of the dry milk. I think it tastes best mixed with really cold water for the cereal. I use some kind of granola + fruit.

Generally, I premix the dry milk with any of the other dry foods it's going to be used in, in a Ziploc, and add boiling water or throw it into the water if it's food requiring cooking time. If by "chocolate powder" you mean instant hot cocoa, I just premix a guesstimated amount of cocoa for the number of days I want it with the guesstimated amount of dry milk and pour what seems to be enough into the mug before adding hot water. It mixes up fine.

Use REAL milk, keep cows happy!

Enertia Foods sells powdered whole milk. I bought some but have not tried it yet. Dry lowfat milk is just gross (IMO).

For what it's worth (it's been a long time since I b'packed with kids), powdered skim milk lasts longest and I've always had better results by mixing it with water before using it - likewise dehydrated foods.

Nah, they switched brands from the good stuff to something truly execrable...Now all they have is this stuff that is "French Vanilla" flavored, yuck. They used to have mocha-flavored, that was pretty good! Especially when hydrated with coffee! Yum!

lol...yes I have a little coffeemaker right here...it makes one cup at a time. I got it as a birthday present in 1993, so it's been making my morning cup of coffee for almost 10 years now! When it breaks, I will cry, because they don't make them anymore.

(BTW, that's when the "Spending $10 to fix a $5 item" thing kicks in)

speaking of Columbia, did you know that the US spent a little over $200,000 on schools and Alternate Programs there, and $200 MILLION on 16 Black Hawk helicopters in the War On Drugs (trying to get rid of the source of cocaine)? the helicopters don't even do anything but "keep a lookout," and there are much cheaper helicopters they could have used. also, all the farmers of coca plants at a town meeting (somewhere in Columbia, i forget where) said they wanted to stop growing coca, if only they were provided with some other means of making enough money to feed their families. also, when the US planes spray defoliants on the coca plants, they also hit schools, houses, other crops, and people.

i'm reading a new book, can you tell? it's called "Busted," it's really good. i'll use any opportunity to talk about it, LOL!
