I saw the full Pearl vid yesterday...brutal...i don't see how some pple can be so cold hearted and hate so much

At the start of it Pearl is laughing and talking easy..like he thinks they are letting him in their group to do research for his story.

I haven't seen the tape and not sure if I want to. I hope this country doesn't forget what those people did to that man and if we do that video needs to be shown to remind us of the evil that is out there. Those people are doing everything they can to harm American citizens. They don't care if it is a man, woman or child they kill. I feel if another attack happens in this country the outrage will explode like we haven't seen before and the US may attack every country that is even being suspected of hiding those bastards.

Crazy Mike, I know you like to joke around but that was not the time or place.

I heard on the news, that the FBI is suggesting to a couple of websites, to stop showing that video.

Of course, those people in charge of those sites are yelling, "the right of free speech...blah, blah".

Some people (sickos) will do anything to make a buck.

I fail to see how watching a man be murdered constitutes someones right to free speech.

The family asked that it not be shown, shouldn't that be enough?

what websites are showing it?

Mariane Pearl gave birth yesterday. I know of one site that was showing the video but didn't want to be voyeuristic. I can't see how viewing it would serve any useful purpose and is disrespectful to the living.

During this past week, the NY Times published an article about the final moments of those above the crash zones in the WTC. They based it on the hundreds of cell phone calls, etc. that came from those who ultimately died. Accompanying the story was a picture of a man falling from the building.

I imagine the philosophy the paper used was that a sanitized version of the WTC did not serve history or our decisionmaking process very well. Only when we see the true horror will we have the staying power to see this fight through.

Apparently, the Pearl killers had ties to Al Quaeda (sp?). Do we sanitize what happened to him? Or do we use the recoil of our horror to keep up steadfast against the enemy?

When the NYTimes does it, it's good journalism. When a website does it, it's somehow not right.

I do have sympathy for the family, and I guess I would draw some lines, but seeing reality in this case might serve a greater good.

Possibly RL and you do make a good point.

I normally would argue for the uncensored version to be aired as I believe in total truth in history. But there has been more than enough horror to go around. Seeing or not seeing another atrocity will not change my resolve to see this through to the very end.

I'm sorry if I come off as an A$$ to anyone but I can't find it in me to aid anyone in disrespecting the wishes of the Pearl family.

LOL! Always check the URL before trying a Violin link!

BTW: I used a google search to see the video. It's horrific, but it tells a story. I agree with reformed. The fact that it was apparently made by the killers means it tells us something about them. Its not like it was a video developed by a Fox reality show.

I think its reasonable to put it on the web. The only reason I could see for banning it from the web would be if there were instructions hidden in it.

Does it matter at all to anyone that the family has repeatedly asked that the vid not be shown?

It doesn't matter if there are messages embedded in it or not. The Daniel Pearl video is being widely distributed throughout the Middle East as a recruiting tool for Al-Qaeda and other associated terrorist groups. So the target audience is already pretty well saturated.

HPM, I have not seen the video, I'm not sure I ever will. I am very angry because it seems the U.S. has been attacked several times (never having attacked first that I can remember) and we are always blamed for everything. I don't have a problem with the Pearl video being on the net, the one site I've seen it on was showing it for free so they were not exploiting his death for money.
I think the point I'm trying to make is this, America prides itself on being a "free" country, I don't think we should let the citizens of America decide what to watch and not let terrorists dictate what is available to Americans

Dunno. Everyone is making good points about this one. If I were the family of Pearl, it would be like this constant background scream, the idea that every minute, someone else was watching the horrifying video. But does this help galvanize American war sentiment and/or continue the victimization of Pearl? Dunno. Maybe this is just a step forward in the techno age. Maybe lots of real violence on video will become available for replay on the internet by anyone. Maybe Columbine will be replayed as a warning to teenagers that no one is safe. Maybe the Oklahoma bombing news clips will be replayed at U.S. government agencies all over the world to remind people that terrorism is not limited to non-Americans. As painful as it is for the Pearls, the video is part of the historical record of an important time in the history of the U.S. We've all watched President Kennedy get shot in detail, in various historical documentaries. This is not much different, in my mind.

I watched it. It made me a little sick. Politics cannot be blamed for the execution of a journalist. The people who did this are solely accountable.

I feel bad for his family, and I'm angry that the terrorists got the opportunity to twist Pearl's words in the way that they did, while making a recruitment video of his murder.

I don't generally believe in cultural darwinism, but in some cases, where culture and hate are equivalent, I am starting to have some very uneasy thoughts.

Good point about the Kennedy assassination, LyndyS. I guess watching that frame-by-frame could be considered heartless or historically important too.

Dan Rather of CBS news showed a 30 second portion of the video (not the beheading) because he felt that "...it's important for Americans to see it, and to understand the full impact and danger of the vicious propaganda being spread against the United States."

Does it actually show them decapitating him? Can some one give me details..I really don't have the heart to watch it...

It's done on a video machine. they have blacked out the background behind Pearl, and filled it with images of dying arabs, and wounded babies, and the like. The decapitation sequence is quick, but brutal, and they show an extended view of his severed head.

There is the standard propaganda in subtitles all throughout the video.

These people are without conscience.
