Is there going to be a TT trip here that only has to do with music? lol
I could see the trip report now;

A bunch of us got together for the weekend. We didn't see a single trail and no one slept in a tent but we played a bunch of ZZ Top, Black Sabbath, CCR, Lynard Skynard, Mountain, Nine Inch Nails, & even a few jams we made up ourselves.
Pictures and wave files will be posted soon.

What's the best sound a banjo ever made?

The sound it makes when you throw it in the dumpster and it bounces off the accordian.

TILT???
Tilt, I can't believe I agree with you on music?? *Faints dead to the floor*

"There's a full moon on the 14th, first quarter the 23rd..."

I have a Martin D-12-28 (12 string) and a Martin Backpacker acoustic. I also have a Yamaha classical..I play fair..sing pretty good. I can read music and admire those who can play by ear - that is a rare talent!

Mellow Rock, Beatles, Springsteen, Folk, Almost anything Country..

I play mostly Rhythm..my lead is okay when I finger pick the 12 string. I struggle with bar chords too..they are my nemesis..

One memorable night long, long ago, we were sitting around the flickering TV light, some messed up old folkies and I, when Tiny Tim appeared on the Johnny Carson show.

"What the hell is That?", I exclaimed.

"Well, Junior, that's just the ever-changing face of Folk Music."

Bar chords on a 12-wire... yow! LOL

Zep and Who....

When I was a pup my first concert was Led Zepplin(opener) and The Who......April '69.

Zep was a tough act to follow.

Several years ago on PBS I saw Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill and Steve Wariner dukin' it out on Fender Telecasters.

Those dudes are ALL hot Tele-pickers.......forget the bluegrass....country, chickin-pickin', electric blues!

Just how in the hell do ya tune one of those 12-thangs?

txwoodsbabe, i have looked at those but i can't get over the cheesy, whimpy sound they have. It would be better than nuttin, but i think an old 3/4 size beater would be the right thing for me.

We have a party to play this weekend, gonna be a goodun! We get 500 bux! CAHCHING!

Favorite Bluegrass Bands..

Allison Kraus and Union Station

Del MCoury and the Boys

Nickle Creek..with a twist of Celtic

Old New Grass Revival

Im not much into old time bluegrass. I tell you the best picking I have ever heard being played is the informal ,grab your instrument and join in the parking lot of any bluegrass festival.

Stratdewd...sounds like fun..trading blues licks..
Right now im getting more interested in Celtic music..and all matter of Celtic life..

Back in my teenage years I played in a band for a while. Got married and settled down and gave up music. At 32 I came down down with arthritis. I was bedridden for a couple of weeks. I thought I would never again be able to do the things I loved. I started hiking again. But this time I see more of what I had been missing in years past. I also started playing again. I dug out my old Alvarez dusted it off and put on new strings, I started playing again and pretty soon I bought a Fender Tornado and then a Lez Paul Studio. I played CCR, Lynard Skynard, Eagles, CDB, and such as a teenager. I havn't outgrew these bands yet, but due to the arthritis I can't play them like I used to. I still enjoy bending the string from time to time. I would love to meet up with some of ya'll and jam for awhile, but my time off from work is limited.

I got an amp today. It's a Fender M-80. The SG guitar I was saving toward got sold so I'm going to go this weekend and hit a few places in Nashville. I almost bought a Yamaha Strat Copy with Humbuckers but decided against it. I still want another B.C. Rich.

Well, I wound up getting the Yamaha guitar I mentioned earlier in the thread. I've been having a ball playing it. With my messed up finger, one of my weaknesses is making cords. Another weakness is playing accurate solos. I think I can overcome the solos to a point though.
I've been doing a bit of writing and also going back and playing some of the old origionals from the garage band days. Even trying to get my vocals in shape. there could be a glimmer of hope there believe it or not.
On one of our old tunes there has a slow part that explodes into a fast & heavy part. I couldn't make the cords fast enough so I got the keybord out and play the mellow part on it and crank up the axe for the heavy parts. I plan to do it like that when I record it.
Also, I'm in the market for a drum machine, 4 track recorder, and a bass guitar.

World tour starts in 2003!!
(yeah right)

Get Well Soon
If you play with yourself alot (lol) have you considerred getting a sampler, such as a Boomerang Phrase Sampler or something of the sort. A buddy of mine has one and it's the #&%!$ for playing alone...you can play riffs while sampling them, then play to those samples using them to keep you in time like a click track or drum machine. There's so much more you an do with them. I know there's lots of people who don' like to use sampled music, but hey, if you play alone alot, there's infinite possibilities to keep you busy.

The Keyboard has a basic drum beat on it but it's not programable. I'd like to be able to compose a whole song and use that for the drum track when I record. I don't have any plans of being in a band again so a drum machine is all I need.

cool man! glad to see the bug bit ya again. have you ever messed around with cakewalk? it's a recording program for your computer. there are others too. when we recorded our demo cd(5 songs) they used cakewalk. it was fun watching them use it. i have an online buddy that got sick of the band scene & just started recording his own songs on cakewalk. he's a great guitar player & does the bass & drum tracks on a drum machine, although the fulll version of cakewalk has drum samples. he used cakewalks drum samples untill he was able to get a drum machine, because it's more versatile. he's not that great of a singer but i think it's really cool that he tries and he writes good lyrics too. he even puts in some samples buddhar. creativity is where it's at. let us know what ya come up with and lets hear it.

roland has a relatively new product that's around $1,000, but it's like a mixing board, cd burner, recorder, all built into one. I could take it, & run a signal out of my board at a gig, and record the gig & 5 minutes after we stop playing, i could have a cd of the performance. now THATS what i'm talkin bout! it has lots of other cool bells n whistles. maybe the price will come down on them soon.

I figured there had to be a program out there but didn't know any names for it. I'm worried my computer may be too slow to handle anything like that. I'd probably have to add more RAM & hard drive. Does that program have effects too?

you are correct, the files you end up with are HUGE so you do need lots of RAMs n ROMS n GOATS n whatevah the heck else those things have(i'm no computer geek). You'de prolly be better off just getting a system set up for audio0videa applications instead of addin to yer old one. And yes it has effects, or you can import them from the web or other sources.

I just bought a used Roland Drum machine. I hope I can figure the dam thing out. If I can it should work out pretty good for me cause I can compose the entire drum part for the whole song. Also got a small practice amp for it.

Next step will be to find a bass and then figure out what I'll do as far as recording equipment. I was thinking about a 4 track at first but I'm worried the quality will suck. That's still a little ways down the road though.

Just caught this thread...
...and thought I'd chime in... pardon the pun!

I jsut bought a new Alesis keyboard 'cause I've been wanting to take piano lessons for a while. Bought it on EBay, got a good deal, and now, am psyching up to make the commitment for weekly lessons.

I wondered, though, if there's a way to get a jump start or to supplement lessons with something on a "self-teaching" basis? Been putting this off for quite a long time, and now, I'd like to dig in with a vengeance... any suggestions?

JUST JAM DOOD!
man, i dont know too much about keys, although i have figured out a few things on my stnad up piano. But there's lots of "lessons" on the web for guitar so I'm sure there is for keys too. Just do a search. The main thing is jsut paly as much as possible. If you have the chance to talk to somebody that palys the music you like, & show you a few things, that goes a long way too. If yer takin lessons, just tell yer teacher how gung ho you are & work ALOT on between practices, it'll speed thing up. Also, any chance you have to play with other folks is the best way to learn. at least for me, thats when i figure alot of stuff out.

how do you get to carnagy hall?

practice!
