Smokies-Silers Bald to Cosby Knob

“Silers Bald to Cosby Knob

Half of the 71 miles.
Any one ever done this section?? Its suppost to stay up over 5000 ft for 34 miles!

Any one interested in hiking this on the last weekend of June untill July 1..

Dates:
June 28- July 1

Some where between these dates they may change a day here and there to fit schedules. So far Josh and myself are going with shuttle taken care of allready.”

“We are going to meet at Smokemont Campground Friday Night.

Saterday Morning Drive to Clingsmon Dome to start the day and head North for Icewater Spring Shelter for the night.

Sunday we will pass up Charles Bunion and head to Tricorner Knob Shelter to crash.

If Monday is an option we could finish off at Cosby campground where our shuttle will pick us up.

The total will stay around 34 miles still since we are going to take Low Gap Trail to the Campground Monday.

“Silers Bald is 4 miles south of Clingmans Dome.

Clingmans north to Newfound Gap is forgetable.

TriCorner to Cosby has a really nice section of ridgewalk past Mt. Guyot.

I'm never been between Icewater and Tricorner.”

I did this section going up (south). Just a green tunnel going up. Like HPM says nothing special. It is the only section of the park that I have done that I would not like to do again. The other miles that I have done, I would love to repeat.”

“HPM, I just forgot to mention that we would miss Silers Bald! I ment to mention that in the itinerary post.
I figured it would be stupid to hike 4 south then north again. The dome does suck but must be done. This past weekend I just hiked to Charlies Bunion but the thunderstorms pushed us down to quick to enjoy.”

“Actually I really like the section between Silers and Clingman's Dome and i think the best way to do that is to go north to Clingman's. If you have never done it then yeah do it.

It's just I don't care for Clingman's north to newfound as i've done it about four times.”

“I would if I could. Heck I'd even hike Clingmans's to Newfound with ya.

I'm committed to go to summer camp with my Scouts this year from June 29 to July 7. I have 32 going so I can't back out.”

I'm with you. Lots of ripe berries in that strctch during Aug. And lots of bears eating them, too. It should be great about now, also. There are several mini-balds which should be showing off their flame azaleas.”

“I hiked from Silers Bald to Clingmans Dome once, and it sucked. It was cloudy and my girlfriend had mjor blister problems. However, we did see a huge bear at Silers Bald the night before, which made it worth while.

“Ya, I've done every bit of it.. the east side was done in October with Trey and myself in 18" of snow all the way, and the west side was done with Skully in May..

There are parts of it that are absolutely incredible, there are parts that are absolutely forgettable.. :).. Prowler, you can read some of the sotries from there, and see pics.. it's all on the website.”

“The section you are referring to (5 miles about 5'000) is really nice tho.. most of the trail literally is 4 - 10 feet wide with it falling away on both sides. We had a HUGE T-storm coming up that day..”

“I'm going to do a hike in the Smokies prolly in January, Prowler.. I want it as cold and as impossible as it can be.. and I am STARTING with the Porters Creek - Charlies Bunion Manway.”

I'll be in the Smokies that Saturday and Sunday doing some dayhikes. Saturday I'm doing Gregory Bald and Sunday I'm going to see the elk in Cataloochee.”

“No you can't have his stuff. I've just saved him from suicide. I get his stuff.”

“ahh, that is why i consider you guys my friends. nothing like knowing i'll cause more heartache if i don't kill myself than if i do. maybe i'll just jump off one of those parts of the trail that's only 4 ft wide. i do have way more gear than i could possibly carry at one time though. that would still leave a lot for you vultures. i'm just not gonna do it. that'll teach ya.”
