“Anyone went crossed over to Canada with a DWI on there record? I'd heard even if it's like 9 years old they stick you with a $300 fine before entering? Is that true?” 10:47:49 AM 6/02/02 “My trips across the border, only once did they ask to see my license (about 20 years ago) and that was coming back into the US. So doubt they will even know your past record. And when they ask if you have any liquor, just don't show them the open bottle on the front seat ! :-)” 11:09:35 AM 6/02/02 12:38:42 PM 6/02/02 “What about since 9/11? They probably take a DNA sample now.” 1:05:27 PM 6/02/02 “Since 9/11, I have actually noticed more increased security re-entering Canada as a resident, than I have entering the U.S., when driving across.” 1:12:49 PM 6/02/02 “Down here it's "drunk". Up there it's "pissed". Just tell them you have never been pissed.” 10:06:27 PM 6/02/02 “I go to Canada a few times a year and have never been asked about my driving record. Been once since 09/11, were asked more questions, there was a line and a few vehicles pulled over.” 7:47:58 AM 6/03/02 “Well, one of my colleagues, apart from being a former student, is a part-time Customs Officer and I asked him. I was surprised to discover that both U.S. and Canada Customs have access to both countries criminal records. If they ask or check, they will not fine you, but they will refuse you entry. Canada (and I believe several states) has a pardon programme that if your offense was not repeated and the conviction is over five years old, it will be removed from the criminal list. You can apply for a Canadian pardon for an American record and can get the forms at a major crossing point (they won't all have them). I guess you could also get in touch with Canadian Justice. Would anyone have a link? Good luck.” 12:20:54 PM 6/03/02 “Canadian Justice was no help. I'll post the info to-morrow. Meanwhile, it might be worth checking to see if there is such a programme in Minnesota.” 12:47:59 PM 6/03/02 “I called 1.800.622.6232 (1.800.O-Canada) and they gave me 1.800.874.2652, or www.npb-cnlc.qc.ca/pardons/servic_e.htm” 1:10:55 PM 6/03/02 “Just talked to a guy that said it's called a WAVER! Yep, I guess if they ask and do a check it's $200 american. I was told to just say no and you probably will not have a problem... although I'd never recommend such a thing... of course...” 1:15:49 PM 6/03/02 Cananda Entry “I try to get to Canada often. Since 9-11, I have found entry is a little more difficult. Two things they rarely did in the past, they more often than not do now: 1) Ask for drivers license and passport/ birth certificate copy. 2) They will run a routine computer check on you. My advise. No matter where your going in Cananda,no matter how far off route, cross at North Dakota/ Manitoba. They get lonely and often just want to have coffee and donuts with you. I never have any trouble there.” 3:31:27 PM 6/03/02 DWI - Info “Found this while looking at an Outfitter I've used in Canada in the past. Drunk Driving Driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offense. Penalties are heavy, and any prior conviction (no matter how long ago or how minor the infraction) is cause for exclusion from Canada. A waiver of exclusion may be obtained from a Canadian consulate in the United States, but several weeks are required. There is a processing fee for the waiver. http://travel.state.gov/tips_canada.html” 9:18:58 AM 6/10/02 “they will lose a lot of tourists from euro if thats the case. I dont know how they can find anything less than a felony.Dont think dui is a felony anywhere in the US.” 12:04:01 PM 6/10/02
