“My bro just emailed me. He wants to climb Mt Hood and Rainier this summer. I have zero experience at high elevation (but I heard Hood is easy). Should I go?” 5:49:30 PM 6/03/02 “of COURSE you should go.” 5:53:29 PM 6/03/02 “unless your brother is an idiot of course.. or doesn't know the first thing about backpacking.” 5:54:05 PM 6/03/02 “biz, honeychile...give it up for the kleetydawg.” 6:00:23 PM 6/03/02 “He is not an idiot. He is an experienced climber. I on the other hand, am not. hmmmmmm” 6:00:44 PM 6/03/02 Ü kleetydog in the house “give what up?” 6:01:41 PM 6/03/02 “Your bro oughta know-he doesn't want to kill you does he?” 6:03:32 PM 6/03/02 “I'd go Biz. You might not have another chance.” 6:05:46 PM 6/03/02 “yeah, that's what I was thinking. How many opportunities do you have to do such things with people you know and trust? I gotta work out twice as hard now. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!” 6:12:27 PM 6/03/02 “Just watch the movie "Vertical Limit" before you go. I'll teach you everything you need to know and you'll be guaranteed a safe trip.” 6:19:09 PM 6/03/02 Ü Ü Ü “Woof, baybeee.” 6:26:25 PM 6/03/02 “Go.... Hood is one of the easier mountains, you'll love it...but remember last week... stuff happens. Learn to use your crampon's and ax before you get high, I'm sure he will show you if you don't already know...even if you do know practice for a bit. Tips from Vertical Limit (the comedy) Be sure to use a metal fuel bottle to drink water with, it's what's "in" now.....just kidding....don't wear that dammed scarf around your neck either....marks you as a "Dewie" I swear, I have seen people drinking out of metal bottels since that movie came out (this winter) and wearing those fashion statement scarfs around there necks too....if it wasn't so sad it would be funny.” 6:41:29 PM 6/03/02 “what's up w the metal bottle? i haven't seen anyone packin nitro yet.” 6:46:38 PM 6/03/02 “People are using the pretty anodized fuel bottles for water, aside from the problem with the small neck freezing up....it freezes to your lips. During the movie, the girls I was with (very experienced climbers) kept mimicking what would happen in real life...holding their hands up to their mouths and making rather rude noises, like they were trying to unstick their lips and pull the bottle away.......we almost got kicked out of the theater...” 7:11:11 PM 6/03/02 “lol. I have a couple of those fuel bottles. They have fuel in them though. :P phooeyyyyyyyy” 7:25:17 PM 6/03/02 “Go on and do it till you're satisfied. "You say the hill's too steep to climb? Climb it! You say you'd like to see me try Climbing? You pick the place and I'll choose the time And I'll climb that hill in my own way......" -Pink Floyd” 8:20:31 PM 6/03/02 “God knows I need some!!!!! 8)” 8:21:26 PM 6/03/02 “Crazy Mike is trying to get some again. 8)” 8:28:42 PM 6/03/02 “driveway weed?” 8:35:45 PM 6/03/02 “Help for my brain!!!! LMFAO!!!!! 8)” 8:43:31 PM 6/03/02 “And he has a FA!” 8:46:18 PM 6/03/02 “I hear that Rainier is a bear to climb and requires experience to know the routes. There were some threads on it many years ago...don't know if they would still come up on a search or not. Train at altitude as much as possible. You can come by here in So. Cal. and use the Vivian Creek Trail in the San Gorgonio Wilderness for conditioning hikes. Either that or some Sierra hikes.” 8:54:24 PM 6/03/02 “That's what I was thinking Wolfsister... Is there Trouble with the inheritance? Not anymore! We used to mix up kamikaze's in those Sigg bottles... but that was 15 years ago (in the summertime).” 8:56:47 PM 6/03/02 And Oh Yeah... “"Do you need therapy?" That's a rhetorical question, right?” 8:58:44 PM 6/03/02 “GROUP THERAPY! GROUP THERAPY! ! ! !” 10:03:59 PM 6/03/02 “you need therapy if you pass up the opportunity” 1:56:36 AM 6/04/02 “I just found out that the guy who sat next to me at my old job climbed Rainier! Ok, that's it I'm going! (removes pocket protector and nerdy glasses with tape on them)” 3:06:11 PM 6/04/02 biz “Lots of luck. Although you might need the tape to cover your injuries seeing you just threw away your glasses!” 3:29:52 PM 6/04/02 biz, biz, biz... “ASHFORD, WA (June 7) -- Two climbers fell to their deaths on Mount Rainier and a couple planning to be married at the 14,411-foot summit and a minister-guide survived a separate fall, rangers said. The bodies of Benjamin Hernstedt, 25, of Tigard, Ore., and Jeffrey Dupuis, 21, of Big Flats, N.Y., were spotted from the air about 5:30 p.m. Thursday and taken off the mountain by helicopter, said Jill Hawk, chief ranger of Mount Rainier National Park. The falls occurred eight days after three people died when they were caught by high winds and whiteout conditions while descending from the summit. It was unclear when Hernstedt and Dupuis fell. Neither had climbed the mountain previously, according to their climbing registration cards. Hawk said a park ranger encountered the pair about 11,200 feet up the mountain at Ingraham Flats about 9 p.m. Wednesday and asked why they were starting their ascent at that time. Hawk said most climbers begin their final ascent around midnight or 1 a.m. "The weather had been cold and windy, and he noted that they were traveling without overnight gear," she added. "It's very common for experienced climbers to travel light, to do a summit climb and come back down, but you always want to be sure that they're experienced." On Thursday morning, rangers learned that Melody Wyman, 48, and Charles Grubbs, 50, both of Manchester, N.H., and Kurt Wedberg, 35, a mountain guide and licensed minister, had fallen about 60 feet into a crevasse about 7 a.m. All three were roped together when at least one lost footing in a gust of wind, rangers said. Rangers and other guides from Rainier Mountaineering Inc. pulled all three to safety, and the rangers then went to check on Hernstedt and Dupuis. Finding no one at the pair's tent, rangers began a search. "It was obvious that no one had been there for the evening," Hawk said. "It had been all night, 17 to 18 hours. They should have been back to the tent from the summit." Hernstedt and Dupuis apparently fell after reaching the summit, she added. Wyman was listed in satisfactory condition with a fractured ankle and possible hip injuries Thursday evening at St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma. Grubbs was in serious condition at the same hospital with head, shoulder and rib injuries.” 3:14:11 PM 6/07/02 “Jeez, it's an epidemic.” 3:17:21 PM 6/07/02
