M&M, Long time no see.

Philmont rules, I took trek # 8, it was awsom. On our last day we woke up at like 3 am so we could be in tent city in time for the bus into town. We went into town and all ate a stake dinner from a local reseraunt. Have fun!!!!

PS: Is your troop coming to Nobe this summer?

Maybe the stake was plastic or metal.

My cousin used to be a cowboy (a real one) near Philmont. The pictures he's showed me are incredible.

Our troop is sending two crews in 2003...unfortunately I am not going.

Our trek was in the Northern part of Philmont. It rocked. It may have been #8 also...can't remember.

I was actually looking at trek 8 for next year. We did 13 in 2000. Should be a good time. I have 2 boys in my crew that went in 2000 but are going as adults this time.

Yeah - I've been busy. I work for a government contractor doing graphics. Since 9/11 we have been working round the clock. The little time I have I have been backpacking.

Going to Harriman with 9 boys on the weekend of the 21st. Just got back from 4 days in Loyalstock near Williamsport PA. Very underused trail. It was great.

Doing Philmont and Elk Mountian Range CO next year. Looking into going hut to hut in New Zealand the year after.

Philmont is on fire
The Ponil fire is at about 85,000 acres and about 20,000 of that is within Philmont.

Bummer - We hiked through there on our trek. It was nice wilderness area. The Northern part of Philmont is very rich with history and diversity of flora and fauna.

At least they are not turning any crews away. They are rerouting them on similar treks in the Central and Southern areas of Philmont.

Oh man, that's not good. It'll all just have to grow back before my Boy gets to a ripe hiking age.

Hopefully he'll be interested in the Scouts and we'll be able to get out on a Philmont trek.

Was told that Ponil Camp survived intact but they lost some of the new ranger cabins out that way.

Well, fire is a natural part of the cycle. It's still a bummer when it happens though. Cool thing is that after a fire goes through the wildflowers are stellar the next spring.

Ponil was a nice camp. Glad the camp survived. Hope the vegetation returns quickly.

Good news!
The Ponil fire is now 100% contained.

For more info check out the fire info page link I posted on 6-10
