Pretty limited if you rule out the Skills and Dacks. Delaware water gap is an option, but don't expect much solitude. I've heard of places in Vermont, but don't know that area.

Look at the Finger Lakes Area, Lake Champlain, or There is the Pine Barrens in NJ.

Why do want to rule out the Adirondacks?

The upper Delaware (up above the Water Gap and probably above Port Jervis) is supposed to be a lot less crowded.

Glad to hear that you got your kayak. A few locations are listed here.
I did a google search on "kayak delaware." You might find some leads throught some of the clubs.

Have fun.

Sorry, the link did not quite get to the list.

Click on the Activity Schedule, then on "Click here to view the non-member activity schedule." to reach the list that I tried to link.

ok here is the plan.
i got this inflatable kayak and i cant wait to use it.i am so stoked at trying this!!
i found a couple of places that sound good.
1. wheaton state park nj
mullica river wilderness campsite.
2. round vally state park
they also have wilderness camping.
they both have hiking.
so does this sound like a blast or what??
i plan to put in (i love saying that lol) on june 18th in the am
im planing only an over night but hay it could turn into a 2 nighter!
so you game???

Mullica River is in the Pine Barrens and is interesting. Round Valley is a round reservoir used primarily by fishermen with motorboats, but it could also be a kayak place. The trails mostly go around the perimeter of the thing and are not exactly the greatest trails I've ever been on. There are two dams to impound the water.
It's closer to New Yawk than Wheaton, but if it was me I'd head to Wheaton. Take along the skeeter repellant (or a machine gun). Also get a good map. Have fun in either case.

may want to consider pine creek, west branch susquehanna river, or the susquehanna river in PA. the west branch is one of the most isolated, undeveloped large sized rivers in the east, particularly where it flows through its canyon in the allegheny plateau.

WF, I'm not a kayaker or a canoist, although I have canoed (canoe?). But I do know that you should pack things in waterproof bags and then in a big dry bag.
Round Valley is a lake, so you should have no trouble. The Mullica is a tame river. If you find a rapid, you can probably name it.
Nevertheless, if you are not experienced the kayak could roll. If you can sneak in a quick kayak lesson somewhere it would probably not be a bad idea. There are some things to know about handling them. On the other hand, if you canoe, you probably know most of it already.
As to how much the kayak will hold, ask the folks at the store.
That's my two cents worth. There might be a kayaker or two lurking on this board who can tell you more.

Good grief, Geobeet, I somehow missed the fact that you live so nearby. I hope that you join the PA group for a hike, if you can. You probably live pretty close to Fritz on TrailTalk, maybe jmitch of guidebook writing fame too.

Oh, and wildflower, I would love to join you but my kids are not out of school until that Friday. And I have never kayaked. I have canoed a little bit, but I don't think that I learned anything useful yet. :-D

I am hoping to get out to backpack when my inlaws (read-babysitters) show up on the 25 or so. Maybe some weekend car camping until then.

Wildflower, we should meet sometime and visit. Let us know how well you like the kayak.

The Glenside, Pa., area. As I explained on the Dolly Sods thread, I have not been backpacking in some time due to health issues and now I'm not at all in shape. I'm planning to get a short overnighter in on the A-Trail in awhile to see how it goes.
On my May trip to WVa and VA., I climbed a steep 1,600 footer on a day trip. Had to stop every 10 yards until the trail began to level off a bit, and the term level off is relative. It was like about 20 climbs up from the Lehigh Gorge.
But would certainly be glad to meet other TTers around this neck of the woods. My email address is posted on the bio sketch.

What do you mean a "real drink?" Are you meaning that you like to toss people into the water?

The 18th is a first grade picnic, so that is out. But I could meet you on the 20th when you get off the water. I live in Randolph, which is NE of Chester, and west of Morristown. Where are you located?

geobeet, I live in Hatfield, right near Lansdale.

I also drive right by Round Valley every day. I've never hiked there, though I have thought about it.

My brother used to live near Round Valley and took me there couple of times for hikes or a ride in his Yuppie boat.
Good points: some bald eagles hang out there, or used to.
The trails do have some interesting spots, but it's not what I prefer.
Bad points: Frequented by people who have no idea where the h3ll they are.
The trail spends too much time following the fence line and county roads.
That said, it might make an interesting day trip destination at least once in a person's life.
But from Hatfield, you're halfway to Blue Mountain.
My other preferred destination for daytrips is the Delaware Canal. That too can be distracting, particularly when a busload of tubers disgorges.
Sometimes I stop and walk along the Wissahickon on my way home. It can get crowded in the evening though and sometimes the people are distracting.
That's why I love West-By-God (and smile when you say it) Virginia. Less idiots per capital and more land.
Funny story: my brother was taking his boat out at Round Valley one day when the water level was low so they could work on one of the dams. Guy walks up to him and asks whether it's low tide.
When he told me the story, I said, "He had a New York accent, right?" "Right!"
I said he should have told the guy they have a terrible problem with beached whales at low tide.

How about Harriman State Park (NY). Lots of lakes and places to camp. Just over the border.

Also - for the dry bags I just ordered at www.sierratradingpost.com
cheap.
