Coming to Chicago?

“If anyone is headed to Chicago and planning time at the Museum of Science and Industry, McCormick Place or any place inbetween, beware, Lakeshore Drive between McCormick Place and the Museum will be rebuilt, beginning about a week or so--shutting down half the "drive." If you need an alternative route, e-mail me.”

At least they waited until the smelt season was over.”

“It's a multi-year project. From what I've seen/heard, south bound lanes will be rebuilt this Summer and northbound next Summer. Some exits will be closed.

“Thanks for the info!! Our motorcoach company will want to know that. We go to Chicago a lot, about 5 hours away. Gee, I just saw MSI and your university on a trip there the end of April.”

“Chicago Express/Tollways and LSD (Lakeshore Drive) are all seeing LOTS of construction. They were originally designed for 20 years in the late 60's and early '70s and have been "cut and pasted" for many years. Now it's time to rebuild. (Ah, Ike's great dream.)

Currently, (this is Chicago so things change daily) I-290 seems okay.(Downtown to the West/Northwest 'burbs.)

Also I-294 (if you want to by pass the City on the Tollway) seems okay although there is a short delay as you get north of the city.

Every other expressway (oxymoron) and tollway (NOT an oxymoron) seem to have some deconstruction projects underway. Much of this is needed, but also due to our outgoing, lame duck, scandalized governor's "Illinois First" program.

If you need help getting into/out of/around the city let me know. Will help as best I can.”

“Driveing on LSD or any where else in Chi town sucks no matter what time of day it is you will always find a problem!

“Signs are up for the pending destruction of Lake Shore Drive (LSD). Prolly means that lane closures will begin next week--June 17ish.”

“Tonight's news just said they will begin lane closures tomorrow (June12), to prepare for the major shut down in July. At that point southbound lanes will be closed from McCormick Place to Science & Industry. Southbound traffic will share the 4 1/2 lanes with northbound. Supposedly everything should be "back to normal" end of Summer 2003.”

“Monday, or at the latest, Tuesday morning the construction is happening on Lakeshore Drive. Half the drive will be closed between 22 street and 47th street, plus there is another project around McCormick place. Use the heli-port at McCormick place or Meigs Field, if you can! (I'll be using the train.)”

“They were supposed to have SOUTH Lakeshore Drive "re-configured" yesterday, now they're saying by afternoon rush hour, today, we'll see. (Apparently they decided to wait until after the Taste of Chicago, but didn't tell anyone.) Best bets to the Museum of Science and Industry is I-94, to Garfield Blvd (aka 55th street). To McCormick Place and "the Museum Campus" (Planetarium, Field Museum) and south Loop is I-94 to I-55 (construction is south of McCormick Place.)

“Don't know the last time you were this way, not only are they re-doing the drive, they're re-building the shoreline, to counter erosion, but the method is pretty controversial.

(Also south loop looks WAY different.)

Also, figure, that if anyone is thinking about visiting this wonderful city they should be forwarned.”
