I went hiking a couple of weeks ago and got my feet pretty wet in a stream crossing. A couple of days later, my left foot got really itchy. I aired it out but it started to get red. I tried athlete’s foot spray and powder but it didn’t do anything.

Have you ever seen anything like this?:

It is really itchy and that part by my little toe hurts. I was thinking it may have been a spider bite or some kind of fungus? Any clue?

That is really gnarly looking. It looks like you're growing a third eye on your foot, perhaps you should see an optomotrist instead?

What's a doctor gonna do? Prod it, poke it, say "ahummmm", give me some worthless prescription and charge me $65?

I figured at least one of you had gotten something like this. It's so itchy now, I've got a peice of ice between my toes.

That thing is obviously swollen and probably infected. It's beyond anything I've ever seen, and I've seen some grodey foot problems. I'm not kidding, you should seek medical attention. If you play around with it and infection sets in seriously, it might be too late. Let's put it this way, how far you gonna backpack with one foot? Nothing to play with or take lightly. The itching is probably caused by the swelling. That's one nasty problem.

your right Violin,,,,don't go to the doctor, I mean $65 compared to the price of a foot,,,,,I can see where you might want to save some bucks there.....

NOT!

my apologies for doubting your sincerity. i vow to click on every link you post from now on...wellll, maybe i won't go that far. anyway, i've never had anything like that, and i think you should get it checked out...they could at least tell if it's from a bite, or what. ouch!

Like Lyra, I don't know if you're funnin us Viol man. Still, I'd rather feel foolish for falling for a scam than for not taking something seriously that ought to be.

The thing definitely looks infected and it looks like something has been destroying flesh. I think you should see a doctor. If you develop any kind of a fever, run to a doctor.

(My first thought was that you had taken the picture from something like a site showing the early phase of some dread ifnection, like the "flesh eating bacteria" - I think its a variety of Strep - that was in all the papers some time back. Isn't that what killed Jim Henson?)

There are a host of infectious diseases that can kill. I think Henson ultimately died from toxic shock syndrome. I almost died of that a few years back and only survived because the emergency room doctor recognized it and began treatment immediately. Still, they told me I could have gone either way. That is a serious infection and playing around with needles and antibiotic creams is inviting worse trouble. Get help now. My last word on this!

Fun Infected Foot Trivia!
Calvin Coolidge's son died from blood poisoning after a blister he got on his foot, from playing tennis, became infected.

Otherwise I fear you are jeopardizing our kid-trip to the Water Gap this year...

Thanks for the vote of confidence but I'm not planning on dying - it's my foot, not my heart.

I'm eating lunch now with my foot in a soothing cold water bath. It helps a lot.

R.E. left foot
Violin, you say you aint planning on dying, its your foot not your heart. well i got a news flash for ya!! infections can travel through your bloodstream to your heart real quick!!! i never would have thought an impacted wisdom tooth could cause all that much problem until i was in the hospitol having open heart surgery also with a swollen spleen and about an 80 percent hearing loss all due to infections getting into my system!!
id get that foot looked at ASAP!!!
